  8. I've always thought that one of the hippest interpretations was the Wes Montgomery (M. Brothers, actually) version on World Pacific, which was recorded a year or two before Trane's. Released on the "Far Wes" CD.
  9. I happened to drive by the local store yesterday, and noticed all the "going out of business sale" signs. After a few years of decline there, very few decent sales, and the blossoming of a couple of good indie stores nearby, I haven't hung out there nearly as much, and I wasn't even tempted to go in. Sad, though, and hard to believe. I started shopping for LP's there when it opened, whenever that was... '73? '74?. I feel like I spent half my life in that place (and spent half the money I've ever had). Sigh...

  11. Oh... BOOOOoooo. Don't forget, Rob was a Petrie too. Anyway, I just know that hers was the face in the misty light... and I'm pretty sure I heard her footsteps down the hall a couple of times.

  13. Indeed, and we've also been down the "jazz standards" vs "standards / popular standards" road before, and I can see the line blurring again.
  14. One of my favorites (to each his own, as they say). To me it has a certain magic... sounds easy in a way, but it's a bitch (for me, at least) to play. Most of the renditions I've heard are relatively modern (not sure what year Waller wrote it, but I know I haven't heard many older versions). The canadian guitarist Reg Schwager recorded it in the 80's on a record called "Resonance", and that version completely knocked me out. I'm basically with Free For All, although there are a couple mentioned so far that I don't exactly "love".

  20. I only know of his persona from seeing him interviewed in the Burns film and the "All-Century Baseball Team" (which I happened to find recently on an old VHS tape), but he struck me as a very classy man. May he be long remembered. RIP.
