  1. One of his roles/performances that is highly memorable for me was a 1960's Canadian production of the Jeckyll & Hyde story made for tv, which I remember seeing on PBS in the 70's. I haven't seen it since, but I never forgot it... chilling stuff. I need to get the DVD. RIP, Jack.
  2. I just happened upon this info while browsing the website of a fine guitar dealer in Toronto. I'm just posting this as a heads up (I'm 3,000 miles away, so I can't make it), mainly because I think that Reg Schwager is one of the most unbelieveable musicians on planet Earth (especially in the realm of the "greatest player you never heard of" sort of category). This guy can play anything, any style, and he's not your garden variety flashy guitar phenom. He's a truly gifted musician. So... if you're in the area, and especially if you are a guitar player, I would highly recommend that you try to make it to this event. Reg Schwager announcement at The 12th Fret
  3. On the new arrivals, the genre is on the left. So click on "new arrivals", the click on "jazz" at the left. I found that if you click on the term "jazz", you get all the jazz items, but if you click on the number next to "jazz", it brings them up by media type. THANK YOU! I had already written to DG to "complain". Not sure why the "default" page mixes the media type (at least that's where my old "new arrivals" link took me). If the CD's and LP's had at least been sorted/separated on that one page, it would have made things a little cleaner. At any rate, I'm not sure how long it would have taken me to figure out that I needed to click on the number to see just the new CD's... maybe instead of a number, they should have labeled it "CD's"? One other interesting thing is the list that comes up at the bottom half of the page for any individual title (with the heading "You might be interested in"). When I saw this feature on a page for a Brazilian CD, the titles were all over the place, kind of a random selection (a la AMG's "similar artists" or whatever the hell they call it). Kind of goofy, with 70's electronica and funk (albeit Brazilian electronica and funk) being suggested on a page for an early 60's bossa/jazz piano trio. At any rate, I noticed that the feature seems to work much better (more sensibly) in terms of jazz titles. At least at first glance...

  6. Quite. Why do I feel like I'm on the AOL homepage, or watching Access Hollywood, or E!, or one of the major network morning shows, or... -_-

  12. Oops, sorry Al... I forgot that the W's have taken 6 of the last 10 from the Mavs, and beat them twice at Dallas last season. Yeah Guy, pretty nice win. Still, the thing that struck me throughout was how many plays (blocked shots, steals, collisions, etc) where the Warriors didn't get whistled for fouls (not that they deserved to, but they would have been in the Utah game). Monta looked good again... especially hitting those two FT's in crunch time after being clotheslined by Jason Terry. Baron finally looked like he was ready to play.
  13. Look at the bright side, Al. Nellie & the Golden State Worry-ors are coming to town tonight.
  14. There is now!
  15. I just stumbled onto this cover scan on a blog. Although this CD apparently came out in 1994, I don't think I've ever seen it. Very "interesting" (cough). The wide-ranging influence of Blue Note LP covers has been documented here before, but this one kind of enters uncharted waters, no? Ah, the wonders of photoshop (note the added mic on the left side of the image) BTW, don't ask me to listen to this one.
  16. Absolutely true, and I don't get it. If one or two of them were rusty to begin the year, I might understand, but ALL of them? Davis has really been leading the way, with bad shooting, bad shot selection (especially ill-advised 3's), and lazy turnovers. Dunleavy shows signs of life, but I'm worried about his confidence level... he needs to turn things around this year, or I'm afraid he's going to find himself struggling to find a new home someplace. I think Murph has been affected by the broken nose (the mask has got to take some getting used to). JRich is still not 100% after the knee surgery (seems like he's always recovering from one injury or another). Monta has looked very good. He's going to get a lot of minutes this year, and that's what he needs to take his game up a notch or two. Biedrins is looking better (more confident) too. Man, every time we play Utah, Mehmet Okur and Matt Harpring just go nuts on us. They're both unstoppable when they play the W's.
  17. Rightly or wrongly, I got my introduction to some great material via this label back in the 70's. I recall finding a numer of them at the college bookstore for about $2 or $3 a pop. The one I remember flooring me was "Art Tatum Is Art" (the trio with Tiny Grimes and Slam Stewart).

  19. Many in the local media are saying that bringing in Nellie will guarantee us an additional 10 wins, and therefore we should make the playoffs. I don't know about that... it remains to be seen if this group of players can play smart basketball when the situation calls for it. At least Derek Fisher is gone (hallelujah). And Nellie or no Nellie, the defensive committee of Foyle, Biedrins and Diogu are not up to par, and we're going to get abused in the paint. I still don't see enough defense in general, the kind of defense that will allow us to run. The halfcourt offense is still pretty ugly.

  21. I can't believe the Warriors lost to the Lakers sans Kobe. This is going to be a long season. Guy I had the same reaction. We still need more interior defense, and I'm not too impressed with the roster additions so far. It was good to see them play some D against Portland last night and get a win... and this time their shooting was more like what one would expect of a professional basketball team. But I still think it could be a long season...
  22. This was posted in the YouTube thread (although at the time it wasn't yet up on YouTube, but on the "Tostud" site). Anyway, it's been up on YouTube for a few months. Previously, a video from the same concert (with Trane, Kelly, Chambers and Cobb) was posted at YouTube, here.
