  1. Hmmm... can this question even be answered with any degree of confidence? I mean, you can't "write a standard". Only time will tell. Anyway, I can see the validity of some potential answers (such as j lee's), but it's all subjective, especially if you're going to compare current artists with past greats...

  3. Back in the 80's, I was surprised to find the "Empathy" (Gryphon) LP by Joe Beck and Red Mitchell at a little hole-in-the-wall shop (almost all CD's, and with virtually no jazz in any format) in the little town of Wahiawa, which is in the center of the island of Oahu. I had never seen that LP anywhere previously. I found some pretty choice vinyl at some antique shows we did, some of them out in the sticks. Normally if somebody brought records to an antique show, they were common rock and pop titles, but a few times I got lucky. Found a copy (a little worn) of Clifford Brown's BN 10" "New Star on the Horizon"; mint copies of Kessel's 10" Contemporary albums; and a few others.

  8. Dusty Groove has it for $140 ← Yeah, I saw that the other day. From all the info I've seen online over the past several months, it does look like a terriffic book, but... $140 is way outta my range. I'd have to do some soul searching at half that price. Oh well, I've got many of those covers as CD booklets, plus a few in LP form, and a few in the japanese book "Os Discos Da Bossa Nova", which I bought a few years back at Dusty Groove. Congrats, Marcus. I hope you got a good deal!

  18. Thanks John. I'm kind of surprised this tune has (apparently) remained relatively obscure in jazz circles. Cole's is the only version I have. Anybody know of any other good versions?

  20. ← Hmm... I just returned here to see whether or not track #2 had been identified yet. I've read through the whole thread again, but I don't see where the song has been identified. It was pointed out that Aldo Romano and Paulo Fresu were playing on it, but the album and the leader are as yet unidentified, and although several people thought the tune was "non dimenticar", John stated that neither the song nor the album was "non dimenticar". I just realized that I have a Nat Cole version of "non dimenticar", just played it, and that IS the melody Fresu plays. Did I overlook something? Is there an alternate title for that song? By the way, this one track made the whole BFT worthwhile for me. I love it. I've rarely listened to the Cole version, but this instrumental version has me convinced I need to start playing this tune myself.
