  1. Sorry to hear this, although I must say 87 years is a nice run. Time to return again to these... Phineas Newborn- While My Lady Sleeps (RCA) The Complete Sarah Vaughan On Mercury, Vol. 4 "1963-1967" J. J. Johnson- Tangence (Verve) George Shearing- How Beautiful Is Night (Telarc) Joe Williams- Here's To Life (Telarc)
  2. This is a complete shock... only 58... One of my all-time favorite bassists. RIP.
  3. Being semi-moldy, I too lost interest in "rock" music over 30 years ago, so I'm sure there are a LOT of things that might be considered "classics" by many on the board that I've never heard. I also gave up on primetime, major network tv (especially sitcoms) many MANY years ago (I'm talking decades). For example, I've seen bits of Seinfeld here and there, but I don't think I ever watched a complete episode (I used to watch him as a stand-up, though, when stand-up comedy shows were so popular on cable). I've never seen The Simpsons... and have no real desire to.
  4. So... did you find any you liked in the thread I linked?

  6. I don't know what's so weird about it. There was probably a fondue party going on in the cockpit of a helicopter that flew over your house, and the pilot just tilted the craft a little too quickly as he made a turn. Go out and look around for some fondue skewers (hopefully none of the passengers fell out ). Pet poisoning was the first thing that came to mind for me also. However, I've never heard about somebody doing it that way. It IS weird...
  7. Not that I condone racism, but if we just look at the state of things in terms of stadium security, can anybody help me to understand what the prospects are for improving things? I've never even been to europe, but it seems to me that there needs to be more control over what people can bring into a stadium. People getting drunk and getting into fistfights in the bleachers (or sometimes with the players, which seems to be on the increase, unfortunately) is not unusual here in the states, but you don't see people throwing large flaming objects (at least not that I've noticed)...
  8. I'm no expert on stadium security- even in my own country, but I'm pretty sure glass bottles have long been illegal to bring into stadiums here. Flares... well, of course every fan NEEDS a flare when they go to a game, just in case the power goes out. Is there anything that you CAN'T bring into a soccer stadium in europe?...
  9. Hmm... you might check your collection for "Ray's Idea". It's on Miles" "Vol. 2" on Blue Note, from April 20th of 1953. I assume you have that... otherwise I can give you some other album titles.
  10. Understandable... the temptation can be overwhelming... You miserable CHEAT!
  11. Although I've been a fan of international football for almost 30 years, I must admit that I'm still ignorant (and probably somewhat naive) about certain things. I don't understand why it is so difficult for the fans to be held responsible... and to be policed. What exactly were these "missiles" that were being thrown onto the field? I saw a brief clip on TV and couldn't really identify what they were (although it was clear they were flaming). Would it be feasible to prevent people from bringing potentially dangerous materials into a stadium? It always astonishes me to see matches televised from Europe or South America and to see these fires and plumes of smoke coming from the stands. I love the passion for the sport, but there has to be some control...
  12. It was discussed in at least two different threads, probably before you joined the board. I never bought the set, mainly because I already had almost all of the music in it on LP and CD. There's no doubt, though, he deserved the Mosaic treatment. One of the great tenor voices of all time, IMO.
  13. The closest thing I can think of is that (controversial) Sonny Rollins solo concert at the Museum Of Modern Art in '65. I know he wandered away from the mic, but whether he ever ventured out on the street, I'm not sure...

Jimmy Raney-Cal Collins quartet with Tyrone Wheeler (b) and Bruce Morrow (d) at the Actors Theater, Louisville KY, 1987. 1. Just friends 2. Billie's Bounce 3. These foolish things 4. It could happen to you 5. Smoke gets in your eyes (Raney solo) 6. My old flame (Collins solo) 7. Autumn leaves 8. There will never be another you 9. Darn that dream 10. Groovin' high ~110 minutes

Kind of hard to miss Cal Collins on mine. Is he on yours? If so, then I'd agree we're talking about the same tape.

That's news to me. There was a quartet performance (supposed to have been 1987) with Raney and Cal Collins with bass and drums, in Louisville, filmed from the front row, but from the side of the room as I recall. Sounds like you're describing something a bit different...

I only bought Vol. 1 of the Vogue CD issues (just to avoid any confusion, mine is a BMG issue, not Japanese). As I recall, Vol. 2 contained the Dawn album, which I already had as a Fresh Sounds CD release (with that original yellow cover). Vol. 1 of the Vogue/BMG issues contains most of the "Jimmy Raney & Sonny Clark / Together!" (Xanadu), and has a couple of alt takes (the Xanadu CD has two other tracks from a quintet session from January 1954- "jumping for jane", and "invention"- which are not included on the Vogue CD). Yes... it is confusing.
  19. Gotta have feelin' while dealin' with walkers in their sleep...
  20. There are some very interesting points of view expressed in this thread. I'm not inclined to take a hard stance, and my handle probably reflects that. I do want to say that I hope Ted O'Reilly- whom I know to be a very experienced person in the jazz field- will stay and pick his spots, despite some of the opinions that are in conflict with his (and despite the occasional fool that he is bound to encounter). The internet world is far from perfect, but it can be very worthwhile if one has the patience and ability to ignore, which will likely always be necessary for many of us.
  21. Like I said, I do dig Eddie Jefferson, but as the question here was recommending something besides LH&R... well, for me Hendricks is my favorite- hands down. Jefferson's voice might have a slight edge for me over Hendricks', but Hendricks makes up for it IMO, with his attention to detail, his versatility in terms of working with a variety of material from different eras, and especially his lyrics. Of course, he's had the advantage of being blessed with a long life, unlike Eddie. For those who haven't checked out this 1990 release, I would highly recommend it. Supported by a cast of great talents, doing everything from Louis to Duke to Goodman to Basie to Miles, Miles & Gil, Monk, a little Stanley T, and even a change of pace with JH's beautiful version of Martino's "Estate".
  22. Whew... that's a relief. Now, one more thing- do NOT take it to bed with you under any circumstances! You might roll over and crack it.
  23. I'm glad you're not trying to "denigrate" Pearson... I've gotta ask, though, does it really automatically suggest a put-down to talk about somebody as mainly an "inside" player rather than "outside"? (that seems to be the underlying concept there, which is a little dubious, IMO). But at least you weren't trying to denigrate him.
  24. Hey, prior to my 20 plus years in Michigan, we lived in IA, IL, IN, WI, MA and IL again. I know more about all those places. So... you spent about 20 years in each of those states?
  25. Whew, that was my reaction too (and may help explain why there were 11 people reading this at once). Chris, don't you know that "I'm Out Of Here" is THE most common thread title for a departing, disgruntled, angry bb poster to use? Hey... wait a minute. I saw "Catesta" was the topic starter... so how could I have thunk that's what was going on here? Anyway, don't DO that! I hope you find a good plan and a good location. Sorry, I know you don't want to come to Silicon Valley (even if it WAS once one of the most appealing places to move to... which is why it's no longer one of the most appealing places to move to...).
