When someone uses the term "acoustic guitar", it doesn't always necessarily refer to a flattop steel string guitar. The traditional (pre-electronic) "classical" guitar is also an "acoustic" guitar, as is an archtop without any pickup(s). In the jazz context, "acoustic jazz guitar" often refers to an archtop (though of course not always). Though I'm not 100% sure, this may have been taken at the July, '85 session in question: Louis is holding his (acoustic) L7C (which had a floating pickup); and I think Martin's guitar is an (acoustic) archtop made by the american luthier Bill Barker. P.D., let me pull out that disc, and I'll return later to answer your question (I hope... keep your fingers crossed ).

I'll go ahead and take that as confirmation. Sheesh, where's the FUCK YOU smiley when we really need it? Oh, hold on a sec, I know... (that's not a thumb) Back to work...

Was I right about this? Yeah... was he right about this? And where did Mike go? I feel like we're bein' iced here... ===== Mike, I gotta ask you to confirm something here... you said that Guaraldi plays on three tracks- 12, 13 and 21, and that the album from which #15 was taken is listed on one of those Guaraldi sites. But Guaraldi's not on #15? Are you sure you didn't mean that #12 (and not 15) is listed on one of those sites? I only ask because 12, like 15 is still unsolved, and I thought you might have confused the two in terms of the hints you've given. I know that a Guaraldi-less track could be found on one of those albums on the Guaraldi pages, but I just thought I'd make sure you had your facts straight... B-)

You're right Jim, Vince Guaraldi is the piansit appearing on disc 2 three times, on the tracks you listed. Oh sure, give JIM the credit for something I discovered a few posts before HE did!!! Well, I think it was before him: the difference in time zones may have made it LOOK like he discovered it before I did, but in fact I made this discovery three weeks ago, whereas HIS discovery actually won’t happen until Tuesday, November 16. Like I said, because of the different time zones, it just APPEARS that he discovered it before me! Unless of course I’m wrong, in which case he got it first, and I was just merely following suit! (He always was a better dresser than me!) Al, I understood that entire post (although I'm not sure anybody else did), except for the part about the suit. Do I need to call a lawyer? ... and since when are you such an expert on Vince GuarALdi and cAL Tjader?

This has me a little curious now... what year (roughly) would this have started? I wonder if we really know the genesis of this technique. I've heard the Brazilian multi-instrumentalist Hermeto Pascoal do it, but I'm not sure when he started (I'm not really a fan)...

Forgot to mention- Guaraldi has to be the mystery pianist- #12, 13, and 21 (thanks for the helpful clues, Mike ). A tip o' the hat to Nate Dorward, who said of #12: "I get the feeling we may have heard the pianist several times during the BFT" ===== I'm still trying to figure out why in the world such a beautiful instrumental (#22) got stuck on as a CD bonus track onto a vocalese disc. Did it come from the same sessions that produced those vocal tracks? Anyway, neither the Fantasy site (nor their printed catalog) nor AMG mentions this track in any detail in their descriptions- including telling us who played on it.

Oh, I also linked an MP3 site when I answered #20, but...?
-
?... Well, I linked three sites: a Fats Navarro discography when I answered #8; and two Guaraldi sites. Closest thing I could find was a Guaraldi quartet track called "Calling Dr. Funk" (from that "Jazz Scene: S.F." disc), but it appears to be a bit too long (6:55), and I couldn't find an audio sample that would work for me... ===== Edit: ... and apparently "Dr. Funk" included Jerry Dodgion, so forget I mentioned that...

Go 'Niners. -
Or... "had". Well... ... that would eliminate Malone, but not necessarily Ellis and Lowe... (although I think maybe you just did...? ) (thank you ).

I finally got around to going back to read this thread again, and noticed tooter's posts (pre-Big Al ) concerning track 13. No, tooter didn't quite "nail it", but a tip o' the hat nonetheless! I'm still moderately confused... is "Ginza samba" the same as "Ginza"? Did Guaraldi write it? The closest thing in my collection is "on the ginza" from Blakey's UGETSU, so I ain't got it. Could have Googled, but I'd rather request the info here, thankyouverymuch. Jim, I considered Ellis on track 15 also. "A subdued Oscar Peterson group"... crossed my mind as well. Could OP have managed to subdue himself to that extent? Anybody else hear that Basie influence in the pianist's left hand? Maybe that's too little to go on anyway. I've never cared much for Mundell, and thus I'm relatively ig'nunt about his sound. I've probably missed quite a bit of his work, including the vintage stuff. Russell Malone? I dunno... he'd also have to seriously subdue himself to pull off one like this, methinks...

"I'm afraid it's.... all up to.... Big Al.... now...."

Hmmm... lying on the stomach (in the kitchen?) with the feet raised... why didn't I think of that? I'll try it!

Brownian, Thanks for posting that Landacre image. Spectacular! I've never seen that before.

Say, Mike... old buddy old pal........ have you ever heard of a game called "20 questions"? I haven't managed to spin your discs much since yesterday... and I think the real reason is that I'm going to get obsessed again about track 15, and spend another 36 hours pulling out my hair! I do want to examine some of those other tracks again, though...

Had enough excitement for one week?
Jim R replied to Big Al's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Wow... I'm glad everybody's okay, Al. I hope you get rid of the damn pogo stick (always hated those things). Or, you could keep it in the garage to swing at nasty birds (inside joke) Oh, and I hope the house repairs won't involve YOU going up in the attic! (inside joke #2). Now, as far as people losing sleep, go ahead and admit it... it's because you can't stop telling them about how you solved that track on Mike's blindfold test, right? -
Gene Bertoncini?!?!? Why oh WHY did you have to bring up his name? His playing on Hubert Laws In The Beginning is nothing short of definitive. You guys are making it damn hard to not blow a wad on this guy's recordings y'know! (Edited because I'm typing without my glasses so I can't see a damn thing!) Al, keep your wallet out. Bertoncini also did a Jobim tribute a some years back... BTW, the Campbell tribute I was referring to was for his former boss.

You and me both! I've always been aware that I probably paid too little attention to Eddie. I had one of his LP's (maybe on Concord...?) years ago, but it didn't survive the cut when I was transitioning more to CD's. I have one CD he did with his saxophonist wife, Madeline, otherwise just some sideman stuff with Vince. Like I said, though, I don't recall ever hearing him play like this... He must be one of those guys that likes to "keep something in reserve" a lotta the time. I've known about this for awhile, but I just stumbled onto THIS today. Pretty cool...

Took the words right outta my mouth. I was always a wee bit peeved that Verve never got some of those Mercury titles out as individual CD's (e.g. Quiet As It's Kept; Moon Faced And Starry Eyed; Parisian Sketches). Fine albums they were.

Found the Mosaic Nat King Cole box for $80!!!
Jim R replied to tatifan's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Perhaps the clerk who priced the box set didn't inspect the Mosaic box set carefully. Probably assumed there were 5 double CD jewel cases. A total of 10 discs, therefore 10@$8 = $80. Ebay? $300 - $400 Hmm... my set contains 6 jewel cases: 4 with 4 discs each, and 2 singles (in their own thinner box that also contains the booklet). At any rate, a great deal. Not as good as mine, though. I bought a used set (mint) from a local store in 1994... $40. Highway robbery. To this day I have no idea what they were thinking (6 X 7 = 42... round down?). I bought a few other sets from them around the same time, also good deals, but nowhere near as good as that. -
That’s my man Jimmy Cobb on that?!?!? Oh yes, I GOTS to get this one!!!! Buy directly from the leader - I got it from him: service was fast and reliable, and he has the most of it. I'll second that recommendation. I've bought from him a couple of times. Seems like a very nice cat (look who he worked for early in his career, BTW... he did a beautiful tribute recording a few years ago).

You are! I thought most of you would know the tune but not this earlier version. I got one right !!! WOO HOO!!!! REARRRRIIIIIICCCCCKKKKK!!!!! :rsmile: HOLY SH.... this has to be THE most VILE act ever perpetrated by a BFT leader. The first time I listened to #13 I thought it HAD to be Tal. A classic example of jumping to conclusions. With each succeeding listen, I became less sure, and when I began to search through Tal's discography today (and gave a closer listen to the guitarist's tone), I was sure it was somebody else. The trouble was, I couldn't figure out WHO! The tone struck me as Oscar Moore-ish, and the only other guys I know of who "tapped" like that for percussive effect were Irving Ashby and Herb Ellis. Anyway, I know I've heard that tune before, but I'm sure I've never owned it- not even on vinyl. I've been pulling my hair out over this track (not to mention #15), and couldn't gather enough analytical ideas to make a post. I almost posted earlier to tell Mike that he's a sadistic bastard, but I thought better of it. Eddie DuRAN!! Man, I've never heard him play like that. Not even close! And Guaraldi doesn't even sound like Guaraldi! At any rate, Al, Al, AL! You are not unlike a God to me (of course, you always were). Sheeeee-it... Eddie DuRAN!! Oh, AL! Who the @#$% is that guitarist on #15?!?!?!?

Brownian, I like that Richard Day image. Reminds me a bit of an artist I like- Charles Sheeler. I've been an off & on, part-time decorative arts dealer since the early 80's. My wife and I used to collect much of what we also sold (primarily "art deco", hawaiiana, and mid-century modern furnishings). We made many many great buys on all kinds of items, from furniture to clocks to radios to lamps to... you name it. One of our greatest finds was back in the 80's, early one summer morning at an outdoor antiques fair in Folsom, CA. We bought a very interesting table lamp (for $40), not really knowing what it was (but we knew it was good). It was actually lying (not standing) on the ground... I'll never forget the moment I saw it. A few months later, while out Christmas shopping, I was looking through a new coffee table book called "American Art Deco", and lo and behold, there's a full-page color photo of our lamp. Designed by Walter Von Nessen in 1935. Let's just say we can add a couple of zeros to our purchase price. It's also illustrated in "The Machine Age In America: 1918-1941". A few years ago somebody started making reproductions of it. Here's the example in the Metropolitan Museum of Art: http://www.metmuseum.org/special/americanm...98.537.42.L.htm Here's another nice buy we made- 1920's Paul Frankl-designed clock that we bought at a local flea market for $35 (sold it years later for $750): We also had a couple of Sparton blue glass (mirrored) radios from the 30's that we sold when we started decorating in mid-century modern (I posted photos in a thread here about the "Sparton" record label that was affiliated with Impulse). I don't really "collect" anything these days (the decorative arts thing has gotten very competetive, and the buys that used to be out there are fewer and farther between)... although I still have that addiction to Gibson jazz guitars...

According to my sources, it was recorded in November of 1963, in NYC. Yes, it's been out... I have it on a VGM CD (LIVE AT JORGIE'S) as bonus material.
