Michael Bond, Paddington Bear Creator, Is Dead at 91
crisp replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Is Paddington popular in the US? I grew up with him and am rediscovering him by reading the books to my three-year-old son. Pleased to say they are truly funny, a pleasure to read as a child and as an adult. -
Hey Kids, Have You Heard The News? MOSAIC's IN TROUBLE!!!
crisp replied to JSngry's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
And I doubt the Sunday Gazette is "funded". It looks to me like a labour of love. -
Fantastic news. Thanks for sharing.

I understand the branding on external disc drives can be superfluous, with various brands sharing the same innards. I have two pretty basic drives that have served me well.
-
I recall reading early on in my ripping researches that an external disc drive is preferable for a more accurate rip. I recommend getting two since if a disc fails using one it will often rip using another.

Hey Kids, Have You Heard The News? MOSAIC's IN TROUBLE!!!

Yes. Clicking on discography takes me back where I started. -
My kind of music for sure but these are VERY expensive. Does anyone know of an affordable source for them?
-
I like to buy budget "complete works" boxes to get an overview of the repertoire before exploring other versions. For me they are the basis of a collection rather than its entirety. So I'm happy with the Bohm in that sense but it's by no means the end of the journey for me. Recommendations like those above are very useful (and please keep them coming if you have the time and the inclination) but so are those cheap boxes.
-
Exactly. That was my thinking.
-
I bought the Bohm box because at the time it was the only complete symphonies I could find that wasn't on period instruments. I'm very pleased with it.

If they aren't selling that many sets (at least not usually) does it need to be outsourced? I hope the recent flurry of sales buys Michael and Scott some time for a rethink. -

One of my favourite Mosaics. -
On the optimistic side I'm hoping they may be able to release sets that they have started, such as the Teddy Wilson. Or maybe Resonance will complete the work on these. One thing I do know: if any new sets are announced and I want them, I'm preordering (and I was going to preorder the Wilson set anyway).

Yes. I ordered it last week. Haven't previously ordered backordered sets because I couldn't see the point but now it seems to be an important sign of encouragement to reprint. I'm unsure about the Clifford Jordan. How avant garde is it? I'm not allergic to free jazz but it isn't my favourite and I try to keep it to a minimum. -

Thanks for that. Great news. -

Thanks to the JPJ Pressure Group for all the promising news. (JPJ, JPJ, how many Mosaics did you order today?) -

Nor I. It's a bit like how crowdfunding works I suppose. -

I assume that's the MJQ set which has a note saying it's back in stock "in May"? In any case it's depressing news. I was really looking forward to that Teddy Wilson set. As per the advice above I've ordered the James P Johnson in the hope it will be repressed. I've already ordered the Shaw, Condon/Freeman, Ella and Armstrong in the past week. The JPJ is the only one I don't have that I badly want. Fingers crossed! -
Whole batch of Mosaic Selects and Singles running low

The James PJ is a must-have for me too. There's still a listing for it: http://www.mosaicrecords.com/prodinfo.asp?number=262-MD-CD This must be the biggest Mosaic panic since the EMI split meant that all the Roost and Roulette sets suddenly went to last chance because the rights had changed. -

Oof but thanks for the heads up. I ordered Shaw, Condon/Freeman and Webb. Three big sets in one go (and I just spent a lot on an oop set from a certain bluenotesound) but I don't want to miss these. I'll cut back over summer (low electricity bills!) -
Are there any box bargains currently available?
crisp replied to GA Russell's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Surely Vogue = Sony / Jazz in Paris = Universal. So surely no overlap. The Mosaic was (then) EMI-owned, wasn't it? It's only if you buy EU PD sets when serious overlap begins. Or is that too simplistic? -
Happy birthday!

A word of warning about the Previn: a fault in the mixing makes Ellis, Manne and Brown sound like they are in another room. The other one from this batch I've heard is the Burrell, which to me sounds fine.
-
You start out wondering why you bought those blue pajamas and later you’re wondering why you were born. Great line! Thanks for sharing this interview.

Very good news, thanks for this. I've long thought this would be a good theme for a set, can't recall if I ever suggested it to Mosaic though.
