  3. Liner notes of Dodo say produced by Robert E. and David A. Sunenblick. Uptown website is gone but company still exists. This double CD has previously unissued Lucky Thompson. Lucky Thompson and Don Byas can be heard together on Storyville (Dan.) CD 1018439 — Timme's Treasures (2015) and on some bootlegs recorded in the home of Timme Rosenkrantz in 1944. It contains biographical information, a complete discography covering a 50-year recording career, album covers, photos, memorabilia, memories of musician colleagues and others and an extensive bibliography. Please check it out. 2018 will bring the 90th anniversary of Farmer's birth.

I wrote an article about Teddy Charles for Coda magazine in 2000. it's actually on my website. I did two lengthy interviews with him back then but we never talked about a book. These projects require huge amounts of time (and money) and with relatively obscure or forgotten artists like Gigi and Teddy, sales of anything are going to be minimal. Teddy was another "dropout" having left music in the 1960s and only reappearing 20 years later. It's tough to establish a lasting legacy when you do that because jazz is very much out of sight, out of mind. And it's very hard to write books now about artists from the 50s because few of them and their colleagues are around anymore. If we started to write a book about Gigi now, it would be very difficult if not impossible because most of the people we interviewed the first time around are now deceased. So the book would have far fewer direct quotes and would rely more heavily on other written sources (of which there aren't many).
  10. I am co-author of the Gryce book and thank everyone for their comments. FWIW, the book got excellent reviews and even won an award. It's interesting that this thread started up now because Mike Fitzgerald and I are well along in the preparation of the 2nd edition which we hope to have out this year. It will have new and updated information not available when we were researching the first edition. It will also be available as both a paperback and ebook and as opposed to the first edition, it (hopefully) will not go out of print just a few years after its publication.

    Uptown

    A link to the Charlie Christian Uptown discographical information from the new CD is shown. Please note that as opposed to other issues of this material, Uptown started from the original acetate sources.

  16. The TV show is preserved at the UCLA film archive. I have never seen it but the Gigi group cannot be on camera for very long. There were several other acts on that show including a ventriloquist.
  17. Michael Fitzgerald and I contributed the booklet essay to the upcoming Gryce Uptown CD. Supa Groover is correct in his speculation as to the content of the CD. So yes, it contains the 6 titles from the demo recorded at Nola, the 2 titles from the Gigi Records session at A&R studios and the 4 live performances from Birdland, August 19, 1961. In addition, Uptown included 5 brief performances from the Tonight Show TV broadcast of June 24, 1957 with a quintet of Gryce, Cecil Payne, Duke Jordan, Wendell Marshall and Art Taylor. Biased though I may be, I think you will enjoy this CD which includes 2 previously unissued Gryce compositions. Nothing from the Mercury session is included. Universal should do a CD that combines Reminiscin' with the 1958 Gryce quartet Metrojazz session (reissued by Fresh Sound).
  18. I actually do discography and have done those of Lucky Thompson, Elmo Hope, Teddy Charles, Frank Strozier and others. I have just updated the discography in the Gigi Gryce biography, "Rat Race Blues: The Musical Life of Gigi Gryce," that Michael Fitzgerald and I wrote and it's available online. If we republish the book, it will not include the discography. Print discographies are out of date that day they appear. Even with artists long gone, new discoveries and corrections are always being made. So to me, in the 21st century, online is the way to go.   22. Thanks guys for responding. We hope to reprint the book at some point but not sure when or how. The original publisher went belly up. Maybe we'll do it as an ebook. But however we do it, it won't include the discography or the 2 appendices because we want them to be able to be updated regularly which isn't possible, of course, with hard copy. Also, eliminating those 3 sections will reduce the size of the book by about 100 pages which will make it more economical to publish and perhaps more attractive to a potential future publisher. I'd like to see the economy pick up some more before we do anything. But those 3 sections are going to be available online for the future.

  24. If you listen to early Lucky Thompson, for example, the 1947 recording of Just One More Chance for RCA, there is little Pres, in my opinion. It's very much Webster/Byas/Hawkins/Berry. His playing definitely evolved over the years. By the mid-1960s he had developed a unique approach on both tenor and soprano that is not clearly derived from any one player. But his sound was quite different from Trane or Rollins, much lighter and in that sense there is a connection to Pres. Going back to my earlier post regarding the lack of end note numbers in the essay I wrote for the new Uptown CD, I neglected to take at least partial responsibility for what happened. To make a long story short, in retrospect, my submission was not formatted ideally for a CD booklet.
