  1. Same thing happened to me and then I checked my invoice
  2. Credit card hit for less than half of the order. UPS missed me today... Breath not being held.
  3. These weren't hatologys, were they? They are the worst. I have trouble ripping even new CDs right out of the shrink wrap even using one of my four CD-Rom drives. They often play with jitter errors too
  4. Got my order today - only six of eleven were shipped. Missing were the SACDs of Monk and Mulligan, Gil Evans, Sonny Rollins (Tenor Madness), Chet Baker in NY and sadly, the Big Star two-fer. Oh well. For those of you that have been through this with Concord before, did you ever get any backordered items or was it a bust? I see that most of the missing titles from my order are still on their website.
  5. Though I am a little late, I wanted to at least acknowledge what a great artist he was and in my opinion, a fusion trailblazer (in addition to all of the wonderful mainstream and later, world jazz, records that he did). To wit, an example of an excellent fusion record devoid of all of the excess that doomed the 70's version of the genre: I am glad that I have this album and others that I can enjoy in his memory....
  6. WOW! Thanks for posting. Big Holdsworth fan here. Better get this before Allan and his attorneys send a cease and desist letter.
  7. I have these and they are pretty incredible: Audioengine 2s
  8. Please explain! Why is Jazz Record Mart a shadow of its former self? I have not been there in several years--what happened? They kept getting squeezed on the rent. Now they are in a walkdown location with maybe half the space of the old location. I just find it claustrophobic. The used CD area is generally a big mess. The staff are far less approachable than before (maybe because they sense more hard times for the store -- hard to know). It's probably still the best dedicated jazz store in Chicago, but I find it so much less pleasant that I don't want to go in anymore. How long ago did they move to this new location? I didn't notice an address change in recent years on my copies of Rhythm and News. Don't remember - 3 or 4 years ago. We discussed it a bit on the board at the time. They still have a ton of stuff (though mostly new material - few great finds in the used CDs), but I just don't like the vibe there anymore, so I don't go. I have the same feeling when I go in - plus, their prices can be, well, pricey. At least they are near Star of Siam, so I can get some good curry after a browse (which again, I don't do as much anymore). I went to grad school in St. Louis and have to echo the thoughts about Vintage Vinyl. I was hesitant to move to that town, but VV sold me on the belief that I could survive for three years (this was pre-internet). I remember several Euclid locations too and they were always happy to take my money.
  9. Hmmm - cats and indie rock. I'm in. I live in Lakeview, so it can be a trek, but as soon as this damn snow lets up...
  10. That was "Broadway Records" in my 'hood - right around the corner from Reckless. Funny, I bought a bunch of stuff there - including, yes, Andrew Hill's One For One (sealed as well) back in the day. I loved the owner of that place - a character of the neighborhood that is really gone now. There are some interesting stores still in Chicago - Groovin' High on Belmont (near my office) is pretty good and you can't beat chatting with the owner, Joe (who worked at Record Exchange on Morse for ever), JRM (of course), Reckless (damn, it must be you, ejp, that grabs all of the stuff before I get to it) and my friend Johnny's shop, Second Hand Tunes (down to only one outlet - in Evanston). Of course, there is the mighty Dusty Groove - the cleanest record store in the world! There are a few in the hipster/soon-to-be-gentrified areas of the city, but I haven't been there yet (Permanent Records for one). I'll have to think of some others I've found in different cities that I loved - Digelius in Helsinki for one, a few in Quebec City, Paris Jazz Corner, Berwick Street in Soho (that's what I often dream about as the mecca of record stores, but I haven't been to London in ages), Amoeba and Rasputin's in the bay area. I mean, heck, when I go on vacation, I want to find some good wax.
  11. Sorry to derail the thread (which is interesting - go METAL ROCK!), but I wanted to thank Bev for this humorous trip down memory lane.
  12. Funny - I was thinking about how great it would be if Denardo sat out on this cut, as he has all of the subtlety of an elephant.
  13. Interesting. Hoffman implies that he just found this tape yesterday (or the day prior to the thread over there at any rate), so I wonder if it's the same "master" they're talking about - or how long Ron's had it "on his workstation." Yes, it is the same master. Ron just got it yesterday. He said that someone definitely replaced the box and reels, most likely because the old ones wore out, but it's the one Steve Hoffman is talking about. His CD mastering notes are in the box and he knows this tape well. He also said that if there was a 6 month search for a Blue Note master, he would have been called into it right away because he has his hands on them all the time. I imagine his mastering workstation would be one of the first places they'd look if a master got misplaced. BTW, he pulled the tape to prepare an upcoming LP release. I asked him for some details of this new LP release and I hope to hear back so I can let you guys know. Kevin EDIT: For the record, I am not saying that Steve Hoffman is lying, just that he appears to have not used the right people at Blue Note to find the master. The impression I got from Cuscuna and McMaster was that they knew exactly where this tape was. Ron said that he got the right tape with one request. They don't know if someone messed with Hoffman or why he got the run-around, but they assured me that the tape was never "lost" on their end. You better be careful, Kevin, you just might get banned over there. Maybe Hoffman just happened to find these right next to the Buddy Holly tapes
  14. As usual, though, that thread is ridiculous. Hoffman is the king, the Indiana Jones, etc. Now, who is Michael Cuscuna again?
  15. whilst probably pointless, I will remind you that if you're up for a trip up the red line, my trio is playing at Joey's Brickhouse on Friday after Jazz Fest. It'd be cool to see some of the O boarders that are from Chicago or that are coming to Chicago. Whoa - my office is literally spitting distance from Joey's (across the street). Never thought I'd see something like that here. Interesting comments about Reich and his annual hissy fit (well, he is always bitching about something and his tastes are bizarre). I think I've seen him write that article at least on six different occasions, maybe more. I would almost rather have no jazz coverage - perhaps he should stick to Van Cliburn
  16. Speaking of the Hoffman Board - I continue to be shocked that there are folks there who are getting their first exposure to jazz via these reissue programs. Wish I had that kind of dough to burn. Which reminds me, I don't have all of them, but the few that I do from either series has proven rather revelatory (and yes, expensive). In particular, Lee Way. WOW! With a copy of Soul Station recently going for almost a grand, I am happy I have the MM version.
  17. Anyone have the Prima/Manone Discography? I started tagging my lossless files when it was still available - now, getting back to it, it is nowhere to be found. Any help would be hugely appreciated. Cheers
  18. More likely inventory software that automatically adjusts the price as stock dwindles or supplies increase. Bingo!
  19. I'm with you, CT. I constantly grapple with appropriate, descriptive language when I write. I certainly spend waaaaaaay too much time on them anyway and my training certainly crafted my personal conception. Often, there are only so many words that one can use without stretching the meaning or context. I am certainly guilty, but hey, all I can say is that I think writers do try their best to keep their prose both interesting and worth reading. I know one thing that I absolutely try to avoid is any Yanowisms (or to be Yanowesque ).
  20. I don't know the exact details, but I lived pretty close to a small used store that was bought up by Djangos, so it put a computer terminal in the store. That was pretty nice. Then a year later it went under. Two years after that, 3 more used CD stores in the neighborhood went under. All Second Hand Tunes outlets closed (most outlets were sold to other folks who changed names, etc.) - EXCEPT for one, in Evanston. It is a great store. The owner is a personal friend of mine and it continues to thrive. Yes, there are indie stores that still exist and are weathering the storm, but we are lucky in Chicago.
  21. The latest is "hopefully" next year. I've been told that for years.
  22. Catching up on some posts and saw this one. This is a great record - my album of the year so far. Impressive work from all - particularly Jason Adasiwicz's vibes, Mazurek's horns/soundscapes, Mitchell's truly astonishing flute and Parker's guitar. Have to say that their initial live performance in Milennium Park (with vandermark and david boykin) bested the disc, but this still does a great job at capturing a tight and interesting ensemble. BTW - this is only but a shade of the Chicago scene (esp. because Mazurek lives in Brazil). So much going on here, as usual.
  23. I will disagree with this! I still remember when the CD technology was introduced and hailed as perfection brought to music reproduction. I have since watched numerous steps brought to that 'perfection' and am still waiting for the next ones I was being sarcastic. Actually, my comment was directed towards those who can't live with surface noise. If you take care of your records, look for good pressings and clean them properly, I find that it can be a mostly noise-free endeavor.
