  1. If this ends up being John Patton on organ, I wonder if they jammed to an extended workout on "The Yodel?" Given this show aired in 1966, perhaps they performed some stuff from "Got a Good Thing Going" or "Let Em Roll?"
  2. Just thought of something. This is probably an extreme longshot, but... Atwood said: Therefore, what if Grant Green WAS THE SIDEMAN for this TV show? What if the ORGANIST was leading this group? Since Mr. Luf, the WGBH archivist, said some of the "Jazz" shows have survived, what if there is a tape is filed under John Patton or Larry Young etc (with no mention of other personnel)?
  3. Agreed. I sent a response to Mr. Luf asking if he could share a spreadsheet of all programs extant on 2 inch quad. The intriguing thing is that Mr. Luf said some "Jazz" programs DO exist. We previously knew that some of the "Mixed Bag" shows from 1968 or later exist. However, the news from Mr. Luf that some of the earlier "Jazz" shows, circa 1966-68, have survived appears to be new information. It would be cool if there are some other jazz greats who were preserved on tape.
  4. Feedback from Keith Luf, WGBH Archives Manager:
  5. Some additional info from Tanner today:
  6. Atwood did say: So hopefully Mr. Luf can provide some closure on if this exists or not.
  7. Atwood copied him on the email saying he didn't think it was recorded in the first place. I'll let you know if Tanner weighs in.
  8. Maybe he thought the Grant Green episode was from "Mixed Bag" and not "Jazz?" Atwood notes some of the "Mixed Bag" shows have survived. I would also note that although it appears the Grant Green show was not recorded in the first place, Atwood does not rule out the possibility. However, the chances do seem remote for this existing on 2 inch tape. Looks like the AFM stipulated the show had to be broadcast live. I suppose the station could recorded the live performance, but it remains unclear if they could have rebroadcast it per the AFM rules. Otherwise, what would have been their motivation to preserve it on expensive quad tape? The only other remote possibility for this existing on videotape is if Tanner got the air date wrong and this was performed circa 1968 for Mixed Bag, and therefore might exist on tape as some of those shows have apparently survived.
  9. Just got this E-mail from David Atwood. A quick response from a very nice fellow:
  10. Jim, Great sleuthing. Received another email from Tanner today telling me to contact David Atwood!! Here's a picture of Atwood at WGBH in 1966 operating a camera dolly from his resume web page. Clearly Atwood would be in a position to provide additional information since he was an employee during the period in question and according to his resume has worked for WGBH as recently as 2005.
  11. I googled "Mixed Bag" WGBH, and found a link to this resume webpage of producer/director named David Atwood, who apparently was involved in working on the show. He lists "Mixed Bag" and "Jazz" separately, fwiw. There's an e-mail address there if anybody wants to contact him. When looking at this list, and including those I mentioned above as being documented in the Tanner book as having performed at WGBH (Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Larry Coryell), it still strikes me that a Grant Green video is a relatively rare thing. Of course, most of those artists lived longer than Green, but even Wes had a few sessions captured on tape before his early passing (Grant's popularity didn't really take off until after his death, unfortunately). Thanks! I just sent an email to Mr. Atwood. I will keep everyone posted.
  12. A bio on Lee Tanner. Source: http://www.jerryjazzmusician.com/mainHTML....age=tanner.html
  13. Did you inquire about the "Mixed Bag" show or just "Jazz?" The response I got from the Jazz Icons DVD folks at Reelin in The Years productions was "we recently started working with WGBH." So clearly WGBH does have some jazz archival material of value. Tanner said "survived, contact WGBH-tv for info."
  14. Feedback from Michael Cuscuna (without a doubt the greatest reissue expert and champion of Blue Note artists). He's going to reach out to Jazz Icons DVD folks as well. I'm sure his email will get a lot more attention with the Jazz Icons folks than mine.
  15. Could it be Ben Dixon? http://www.clausraible.com/Projects.htm
  16. Who the hell ELSE would have been playing with Grant Green, circa 1966???? A quick 'n' dirty check of the AMG semi-confirms that damn near EVERY date Green was on (with organ) in '65, '66, and '67 -- was either with John Patton, or Larry Young. The ONLY exception is Billy Gardner, who played on Lou Donaldson's "Musty Rusty" for Cadet, and also George Braith's "Extension" (only 2 out 9 sessions -- the other 7 are all Patton or Young, plus two or three dates without organ). I'm sure Patton or Young would have been Green's first-call choice. Whether either of them were available, or not, is really the only question (in my mind). You are incorrect. He also performed with Wild Bill Davis on the two Johnny Hodges Lps from 1965. My guess is that John Patton performed with him on the TV show. But could also be Larry Young.
  17. I happened across that picture online and nearly fell out of my chair when the caption indicated it was from a 1966 TV show. I would imagine Tanner took other photos, but I don't know if he has published them.
  18. I did indeed ask him about the other personnel and set list. The only feedback he gave so far is a very brief "survived," and directing me to contact to the TV station. No info on personnel yet. Will keep everyone posted if additional info comes to light.
  19. Folks, check out the left hand side of the photo. That's a Hammond B3. Is it possible JOHN PATTON or LARRY YOUNG performed with Green on this show? Green recorded with both Patton and Young during this time period.
  20. I reached out to "Reelin In The Years Productions," the folks who have a hand in producing the Jazz Icons DVDs. Here's the response I got from Tom Gulotta:
  21. If he's certain its survived then he must have a copy or know who does or at least where it would be. Then the issue is purchase/licensing and getting permission from estate(s), none of which should be difficult to do, IMO. Seems to me that if the footage has really survived and is in good condition, getting it to market should not be a difficult task. Tanner said: "survived. Contact WGBH-tv in Boston for info"
  22. I reached out to Lee Tanner who took the photo of Grant Green. It was for a show he produced called "Mixed Bag." He said the 1966 Boston TV footage has SURVIVED!!!!!!!! I have forwarded the lead to Michael Cuscuna and the "Jazz Icons DVD" folks. It would be awesome if this uncirculating 1966 Grant Green TV performance makes it to DVD!! Let's keep our fingers crossed.
  23. Found this picture of Grant Green by Lee Tanner. The caption stated it was taken when Green performed on WGBH-TV, Boston 1966. Does anyone have any information on this live TV performance? Was it recorded to 2 inch quad videotape and archived or perhaps kinescope? Thoughts?
  24. Anyone know if EMI is having financial difficulties due to the recession (and ipods/file sharing)? Any new jazz EMI CD reissues on the horizon? Seems like things have dried up from them.
