  1. There doesn't seem to be much activity from the big labels lately? Are there any upcoming CD reissues? When was the last time Legacy put out a Columbia era jazz reissue?
  2. did they ask you to mail in a booklet?
  3. If someone already has all of the other material on this set, but wants "That Certain Feeling", why not pick it up and sell the other discs you already own? That would help offset the cost of the Select, and you wouldn't have duplication of any of the other material, either. I like the albums as originally produced and not combined and/or separated across multiple discs. Plus some of the Japanese TOCJ remasterings I have sound superior to the Ron McMaster issues, which are presumably used on the Mosaic. For example, the 2000 domestic of Along Came John had a top end boost. I'm assuming they reused the 2000 McMaster transfer on the Mosaic. Why should I dump the superior Japanese transfer of Along Came John just to pick up That Certain Feeling spread across two discs and an inferior remastering ACJ?
  4. Here's my 2 cents on the Mosaic. I haven't picked it up. That Certain Feeling is the only title that has not been issued on CD before. Ironically, this set will reduce demand for the date and probably prevent the session from getting a stand-alone CD release even longer. I would love to hear Junior Cook with Patton. This Mosaic package is tantamount to paying $40 for a single CD for most of us. I suppose it's ok for those without any previous Patton exposure, but still it's not comprehensive and leaves out several Blue Notes. So it fails as a folio package. If one wishes to pick this up for "That Certain Feeling" they will notice that the session is bifurcated, split between two discs in the set, thereby reducing the enjoyment factor or having the session contained on one disc. Hopefully, the Japanese will release That Certain Feeling as a stand alone disc and correct this Mosaic failure.
  5. I picked this one up as a Japanese import which contains one bonus track. I must say that this is a very good date with good sound quality for a period location recording. Perhaps this was engineered by a Japanese team, which explains the detail to sound fidelity? I think Yanow was a bit reductive in his 1.5 star (out of 5 stars) review. While this date isn't groundbreaking, it does find the quintet exploring many of their signature works for an appreciative Japanese audience. The arrangements for many of their concert warhorses here receive some modifications and new flourishes to keep them fresh. Cannonball states that there are "Things going on in our country right now. Most of them bad. But everything is gonna be alright." The quintet then launches in Mercy, Mercy, Mercy. A great piece of social commentary from the band which espoused an optimistic ethos in the midst of a country being torn apart by Vietnam. It's like Cannonball was saying: there's a lot of bullshit going on with the war and the struggle for civil rights, but the country will survive. Priceless. This is very good soul jazz with a post-modern bop undertoe. It's not as classic as the superb "At The Lighthouse 1960" date but it's a good date. I would give this one a solid three stars on a five star scale. 1.5 stars definitely underserves these very good performances of band at their peak. I'm not hearing any jetlag here.
  6. Go to the Mosaic Records web site and click the info email address. He receives those.
  7. Isn't this Smith + LD date one of the first sessions RVG recorded in stereo? How's the sound quality?
  8. There is no email address for customer support posted on the Blue Note site!! Ha! Ha! I had the same problem. So I emailed Cuscuna and he said he was not aware of the problem. He forwarded the email to some people at EMI. I didn't get a response from the EMI team, so I emailed them a picture of the booklet with incorrect pages. The EMI staffer then sent me an email several days later stating that if I mailed him the booklet, only then would he send me a replacement booklet. While I suppose it's nice that EMI finally offered to send a replacement book, I was kind of insulted that he wanted me to go to the trouble of sending the misprint before he would send a replacement--especially when I had already sent him a photo of it. Why should I have to pay another cent to ship something when it's their screw up for not proofing the blueline at the press check?

  10. The is a good one. It was recorded at RCA studios and the sound is very dry with no reverb, but the fidelity is quite good. The performances are very good too. Recommended for fans of Kynard's style.
  11. Thanks Scott -- when you say Japanese 63 concerts are you referring to Nippon Soul and Dizzy's Business as being superior?
  12. Was the 1990 CD a remix from the 3 tracks? Or was the 2003 Japanese reissue with a previously unissued Bohemia a remix?

  14. Scott Yanow gives this one 1.5 stars? Is it really that bad or Yanow smoking crack? The set list looks awesome! What bonus tracks were on the Japanese edition? Was the Japanese pressing a remix? http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&a...10:hc60tr5lkl1x Review by Scott Yanow Performing some of their finest songs ("Work Song," "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy," "This Here," "Money in the Pocket," "The Sticks" and "Jive Samba"), the Cannonball Adderley Quintet is strangely uninspired during this Japanese concert, just going through the motions. Perhaps they were already tired of this material or maybe it was jet lag. In any case, this CD is a disappointment. 1 Work Song Adderley, Brown 4:30 2 Mercy, Mercy, Mercy Zawinul 5:20 3 This Here Hendricks, Timmons 10:09 4 Money in the Pocket Rowser, Zawinul 10:39 5 The Sticks Adderley 4:03 6 Jive Samba Adderley 8:36 Releases Other Editions Year Type Label Catalog # 1990 CD Capitol C2-93560 Edition Japan Bonus Track
  15. I have not heard this one. This is out of print in the U.S. Does Cuscuna plan to reissue and/or remix this? Allmusic seems to pan this one and say Adderley wasn't inspired. Has anybody heard this one? How are the performances and sound quality? How did the 1990 Capital CD sound? How does the 2003 Japanese CD sound?
  16. Not sure what label Criss recorded on towards his death--was it Muse? The CrissCraft Lp was reissued by 32 Jazz (with an inane new cover). But what about his other Lps from this era? Have they been reissued in the U.S.? Or only in Japan?
  17. There is so much great music which is left to be reissued on Verve. What gives? Has Verve discontinued their Verve Master Editions, Elites and By Requests etc? Are they still issuing back catalog material besides John Coltrane? As Van Gelder recorded many of their sessions in the mid-60s, they could even market a Verve RVG series. I can't understand why the Johnny Hodges dates, like Wings and Things and Joes Blues remain unissued on CD--even in Japan.
  18. I've really been enjoying this RVG reissue. The remaster called it to my attention. I had never heard it before. This is a really great session and an unsung gem in the Prestige canon. Anybody else dig this one?
  19. keep in mind that rusty uses and amplified sax on some tracks. this could be the muffling you refer to. what i like about this prestige date is that you get to hear grant green play on some blues tracks, which he didn't do during the same period on blue note.
  20. How do the original Lps sound? Better?
  21. A lot of the Verve CD reissues sound thin in the bass department. Was this the way Norman Granz envisioned the sonic landscape? Or have the CD reissue producers favored "lightweight" remasterings? Example: Oscar Peterson's Night Train is extremely wimpy in the bass department.
  22. What's up with the first track on Bobby Hutcherson's Happenings appearing in mono on the new RVG CD? The remaining tracks appear to have some stereo separation.
  23. hoffman probably runs mono on stereo machine to give a false sense of "space" and "air." is it possible that his stereo heads on mono tape playback technique actually reduces dropouts in the mono source tape? i suppose it's possible if different portions of tape had uneven wear, and Hoffman switched between the better of the two channels.
  24. 5 stars eh? So this is a stone cold classic?
  25. Anybody have this one? How's the music on this one? I'm not familiar with Earland...
