(RIP) Is Jack Wilson (Atlantic & Blue Note 60s pianist) dead?
monkboughtlunch replied to monkboughtlunch's topic in Re-issues
I tracked down Innovations from circa 1977. This is an excellent date. Hope this makes it to CD. BTW, seems like Wilson is a perfect candidate for a Mosaic retrospective from the master source tapes. Most of his music is out of print and scattered across 3 or 4 labels. And of the few titles in print on CD, most are just inferior sounding needle-drops (transfers from old records, like Ramblin and Jack Wilson Quartet). Frustrating. -

Haven't heard it either. If anyone has it, please PM me! -

Who owns the Eastbound stuff? Any chance all this material will be reissued on CD (collected in one place)? -

I doubt anyone has leased anything to Fresh Sound. "Ramblin" is clearly a needle drop. My guess is that Fresh Sound pirated the recording as Spain must have different copyright laws with respect to how many years it takes for a published recording to enter public domain. You can hear the LP surface noise and swirling NoNoise/CEDAR artifacts especially during quiet passages and fade outs. Check out the Spain Lou Donaldson "Musty Rusty" -- another needle drop. Those Spanish folks are not using the masters and are most likely operating without permission of the current tape owners. -
Anyone heard heard this? Nice and greasy. Recommended. Only complaint is that I wish they gave more room to stretch out.

Duly noted. But I did say "near mono" above. I picked up the JRVG in 1999 and quickly dumped it after tracking down the TOJC (sp) version, which was superior to my ears, in spite of being sourced from a second generation tape. Less futzed with than the JRVG.

Hmmm. Check out the sound samples of the following on Amazon: -Grant's First Stand -Stop & Listen While the Willette title is relatively wide stereo, the Green title is collapsed to near mono. Since Van Gelder stopped exercising his "mono collapse" approach around the year 2000, the US versions have been wider stereo. My guess is that this new Green "Grant's First Stand" title is simply the same 1998 Japanese RVG master that Van Gelder delivered up to the Japanese market more than a decade ago. I purchased that JRVG in question and like some of the early JRVGs the mono-ization and hypercompression reduced the music to sonic excrement. Can someone confirm with Cuscuna if Grant's First Stand is a new transfer? Or if they are recycling the crappy early 1998-99 mono Japanese RVG masterings in the domestic series?

Does anyone have details of Sam Lazar's sessionography for Argo / Cadet? 3 Lps were issued on Argo: Space Flight (released on CD in Japan, 1998) Playback (released on CD in Japan, 1998) Soul Merchant I believe the Soul Merchant date has not be reissued on CD yet. Does anyone know? It's similar to his Playback recording. In particular, there is a track called "Sam's Jams" with some great soloing. There's also a hip medium/slow tempo blues called "Soul Merchant." Beyond this, I believe there were some additional sessions recorded, but never issued. Does anyone have details about those? Thanks!

Does anyone have the details of this unissued 1965 Argo/Cadet session handy? Date, musicians, songs recorded etc? This used to be online, but I can't find it. I think the source was the Ruppli book?

Baby Face Willette

Hi - can anyone post the date and songs recorded for the unissued 1965 Willette Verve session. This info used to be on Pete's site, but now I can't find it. I think this may have been published in the Ruppli book in the 80s... Thanks! -
I picked Chicken N Dumplings on vinyl on eBay, and love it. My old vinyl Lp has some issues with pops and skipping. I really wish Concord would reissue this on CD. I think it's the only Timmons session not yet to appear on CD. Have the Japanese issued this one on CD yet?

Grant Green - "lost" 1965 Verve sessions
monkboughtlunch replied to monkboughtlunch's topic in Re-issues
How about a Mosaic rescue? Has Cuscuna ever been approached about this Grant Green Verve material? The 2 Lps with Johnny Hodges are great. Surely the master tapes exist for "Joe's Blues" and "Wings n Things." Plus, if they can find the 2 missing Green led sessions, that would be icing on the cake! -
anyone have details on the live Jimmy Smith date? This is all I could find on allmusic: ----------------------- Recorded at the Village Gate, NYC. Smith in a trio setting. Plenty of fine playing. Does anyone have these 2006 Coltrane Japanese CD imports, which tout 24 bit remastering? How do these masterings compare to the standard US Rhino Atlantic CD remasters or the Heavyweight Box Set from the mid 90s? If the Japanese remastered in 24 bit, did they use the first generation master tapes or copies?

Thelonious Monk - New Sony Columbia CD reissues
monkboughtlunch replied to monkboughtlunch's topic in Re-issues
I'm anticipating that someday we will get an upgraded Big Band & Quartet in Concert. This is one of Monk's best Columbia albums. The 1994 CD remaster is not bad, but contains some shortcomings: --Applause from a previous set was crossfaded on top of "Darkness on the Delta." I would prefer to hear this great piano intro start "dry" as it occured without applause from an earlier set marring it. It appears dry on the 3 CD Columbia "best of set" that came out circa 2002. --Also the great album cover was retooled and also dropped in a hideous purple border. I agree that "Monk's Blues" is a lesser effort, but the "Blue Monk" outtake is very nice. --------- BTW, there are tons of Sony titles that were scheduled for the Feb. 1 reissue batch, including some Dave Brubeck titles such as "Jazz Impressions of New York." Check out CD Universe. Once you view a CD title, then click on the label: Sbme Special MKTS. It will take you to page that compiles all of these new Sony budget releases. It's not yet clear if these are just the same old early 1990s masterings with purple border cover art--or if we are getting new remasters. Given how cheap these are, it would tend to suggest the former? Anyone know for sure? -
CD Universe shows these have a street date of Feb. 1. However, it's unclear if these are repackagings of the 1994 CD reissues (purple border cover art) of these titles or if they are more recent remasterings with upgraded sonics and restored artwork. Anyone know? The record label is "Sbme Special MKTS," so I'm not quite sure what these are. Both are selling for a mere $5.59 on CD Universe! My guess is that these may be remasterings that won't be available in stores. Stores always get retail product with a Tuesday release date. However, Feb. 1 is a Friday--suggesting the new Sony label may be CDs available for Internet purchase only, thereby bypassing brick and mortar retailers for lesser demand titles?

I was suspicious of the sound quality of the new series of Monterey Jazz Festival discs distributed by Concord. After all, these are previously unreleased. So I was suspecting these to be crude private recordings. The new discs include Monk, Miles, Armstrong etc. http://www.concordmusicgroup.com/albums/MJFR-30310/ So, tonight I picked up the Miles to check it out. I popped the cd into my car stereo and I was beaming. Warm rich bass, with a great analog sound. No distortion. It's in stereo and sounds very good for a 1963 location recording. So I opened up the book to view the credits and.... This bad boy was recorded by none other than the legendary Wally Heider. To give you an idea of his credentials, he recorded the outstanding Wes Montgomery "Full House" date as well as Bill Evans at Shelley's Manne Hole. Even more impressive is that this Sept. 1963 recording finds Miles with his new band playing in a soulful groove mode, with and undercurrent of modernism. It's just perfect. The following year, Davis began pushing things "out" and altered his conception with a more aggressive "angrier" sound. That's not to knock later Davis, but it's the best way I can describe what happens several months after this disc. In short, this is knockout Davis recording, which will appeal to all Davis fans--it's acoustic and not too "out," while at the same time it has a modernistic undertow with Miles obviously inspired by his new band, which includes Hancock and Coleman. Highly recommended. Based on the quality of this, I'm going to pick up the Monk. Not sure if Heider recorded the other dates in the series. Anyone know?

Miles Davis late 50s French soundtrack masterpiece is apparently being reissued on CD by Verve on Sept. 18. Apparently they will put all the bonus tracks at the tail end of the original Lp sequence. This should me a major improvement as the current import CD published in the late 80s suffers from the poor sequencing decision of bunching all song takes together.

Face to Face is a monster. Baby Face and Grant Green go together like bread and butter. It was issued in 1997 domestically as a part of the Connoisseur series. However, the 1997 Ron McMaster mastering of Face to Face is not one of his better efforts. Very bright and thin. An JRVG of Face to Face was issued several years ago in Japan, but Rudy was in his "collapse to mono and hypercompress" remastering phase that marred many early JRVGs (and some domestic U.S. RVGs). It is therefore with keen interest that I will be picking this up. I hope that this RVG is a brand new Rudy remastering as the overcompressed JRVG of this title is much worse than the thin McMaster crapola from 97. Keeping my fingers crossed that this will receive the sonic upgrade it deserves.
-
Thanks - does anyone know if Rudy is still doing new transfers for the U.S. market? Or are these going to be circa 1999-2001 transfers he did for the Japanese series? The reason I ask is that I purchased a few of the early Japanese RVG titles, including Face to Face, which was one of the infamous, near mono/compressed monstrosities that typified some of the early JRVGs. Rudy's transfers for the U.S. market after 2001 sound markedly improved, with wider stereo imaging and less aggressive use of compression. So, are these new U.S RVS brand new 2007 remasterings? Or are they older JRVG remasters that most dislike?

(RIP) Is Jack Wilson (Atlantic & Blue Note 60s pianist) dead?
monkboughtlunch replied to monkboughtlunch's topic in Re-issues
The Fresh Sound version of Ramblin is a bootleg produced in EU (Spain?) and is sourced from an Lp needle drop. There is also a mastering error as the tracks on the CD don't correspond to track numbers on the booklet. I don't know what media conglomerate owns the Vault master tapes. Anyone know who gobbled up Vault and is sitting on the masters? -

Check out this unissued Atlantic dates. Does this exist in the vaults or was it destroyed in the Atlantic warehouse fire in the 70s? I got into Jack Wilson when I heard "Something Personal" and his work on Curtis Amy's "Kantanga." His debut on Atlantic (Jack Wilson Quartet 1963) is also a monster. I was wondering what happened to him and if his 60s albums for Vault will be reissued. I'd also like to see a Japanese CD upgrade of "Jack Wilson Quartet" on Atlantic, as the American Collectables CD issued in 2000 (coupled with a Francis Wayne album) is a needle drop from an Lp with massive digital filtering--listen to the massive "swirling" CEDAR digital artifacts during the fade outs. The master tape was not used. Wikipedia and All Music seem to suggest he may be dead. But it also appears they are confusing with someone else born in 1907. That doesn't seem correct. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Wilson_(pianist) http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&a...wifexqy5ldfe~T1

Also strange is that Monk and Davis were under contract to Columbia at the time. So even if Columbia didn't own these recordings, they may own the mechanical rights. There must have been some legal ballet to allow these come out with Concord involvement. The record label for these recordings is listed "Montery Jazz Records," so maybe Concord is just distributing. Maybe Columbia gave MJR permission as long as profits go to charity. So should we expect mono from these tapes?
