Grant Green Club Mozambique UK release
monkboughtlunch replied to The Magnificent Goldberg's topic in Re-issues
Sound samples are up on amazon.com. This sounds pretty good. And I'm not a big fan of Green's 70s period. It appears Green really put a lot of work into the arrangements on this. This may be superior to Alive and Lighthouse. -

Can't remember if this has been posted here or not, but there is a small clip of video of Grant in 1969 here: -
Anyone have this Argo Japanese CD reissue? I was wondering if it is any good. I like "The Natural Soul" a Blue Note date with John Patton and Lou Donaldson, and was wondering if the Argo date is in the same league...

They weren't mediochre boogaloo albums; they were MFin' GREAT boogaloo albums. And YES ! I'm damn sure it's going to be in that vein. Looking forward to it greatly, thanks. MG Live at the Lighthouse is unsurpassed for intensity. The atmosphere captured on that recording is unbelievable IMHO.....and I love all Grant's music. matter of fact I think my favourite Grant Green period is the one from about 1959-1979. Thanks for the link. Looks like they've managed to represent all the tracks except the one called Glenda. I'm sure this session will have it's own unique vibe just like Alive and Lighthouse are both different. I think the presence of Houston Person on this will make it even more so. Also no Claude Bartee. No rub intended against Grant. I just think much of his commerical / boogaloo output during this period 1969-1979 was below his abilities. The presence of Houston Person on this Mozambique date looks promising--as he is an amazing soul-jazz saxophonist. But I suspect this is more of the same "Alive" type material. But being a big Green fan, I will probably pick this up for a listen. Any new Green on CD is cause for celebration. But I prefer his blues/soul jazz and straight ahead period 1959-1966. I wish they would also release more of the rejected vault material from that period, as all of his early Blue Note Lps have been reissued. Having found out about the other two Verve sessions only very recently via jazzdisco I guess they would be the ones I would perhaps want to hear above all others. To find out from posts here that it appears they no longer exist is a real 'soul jazz' heartbreaker. So I guess I'll saviour Club Mozambique even more because of that. Anyway it'll be great to be able to read here how people respond to their first hearings of this historic session. Who says the 2 1965 unissued Verve dates don't exist? -

Also, what is the source material for this CD? Is this a Van Gelder recording? Have they recently found the multitracks? Is this a first generation mono mixdown? Why would a mono mix even exist? Mono lps were phased out by 1971. -

Is this going to be in the mediocre boogaloo vein of "Alive" and "Lighthouse?" Will Grant's performance at Mozambique find him soloing over chord changes--or just endlessly repetitive one chord vamps? Has anyone heard a boot of this material so far? -
Can someone post the tracklisting and personel of the eastbound date? So Green plays straight-ahead non-boogaloo material on this 1973 recording? Can someone post a sound sample? Is this available on CD?
-
How's the remixed sound on this? Is this a McMaster job? How's the fidelity?

Anyone pick this up? How is it? http://www.bluenote.com/detail.asp?SelectionID=10527

Doesn't Kenny Burrell sell? How come there is only 1 Burrell RVG remaster? Does Cuscuna not like Burrell?
-
When was Ruppli's discography published? How did he glean information? From sessions logs? Did he have access to the tape library and boxes? Did he hear any of the unreleased sessions?

Has Verve ever acknowledged if the two unissued dates from 1965 have survived in their vaults?

Here's a great discography of Green, featuring unissued / rejected info: http://www.jazzdisco.org/green/dis/c/

I think there are more Blue Note sessions that were rejected or unissued. Wasn't there a date with Freddie Roach that was shelved? And wasn't there a date with Gene Harris on organ that was shelved?

The BN date you mentioned was released as "First Session" back in 2001. I don't think the Johnny Hodges verve dates have been issued on CD.

Brubeck on Columbia / Legacy CD reissues
monkboughtlunch replied to monkboughtlunch's topic in Re-issues
Not sure if Anything Goes is one of the titles that Brubeck allegedly does not want reissued on CD. The Sony Japanese Brubeck CDs are typically transfers from the original stereo masters. If Sony Legacy USA ever reissues it, they will proabably remix from the 3 or 4 track multi-tracks, and add bonus tracks if they exist. Just something to keep in mind if you are on the fence. But then there is no guarantee Legacy will reissue this title in the U.S. anytime soon. I ordered the Anything Goes and I will post a report when I get it. -

Hank Mobley Workout RVG - Did they fix the cover?
monkboughtlunch replied to monkboughtlunch's topic in Re-issues
Yeah! I saw a bunch of the "Workout" RVGs at Tower, and they all said "Retouched cover to come". Did Blue Note ever reprint this? Or did they just pull the title?
