This is great!!! Bought it yesterday, had great expectations and they are not disappointed. Excellent ballad album, one of the top picks of the year. He develops some real depth here. If only the tickets for his upcoming Frankfurt concert were not sooo expensive - 50 EUROs for a decent seat!

Well ..... spinning her first disc now. A nice voice, typical blue-eyed soul. What annoys me a little is the use of drum machines on most tracks - the whole disc is a collabrorative effort between herself on voices, trumpet (not too spectatcular), keyboards etc. and Oliver Johnson, who plays keyboards, programs etc. I'd like to hear hear with a real band. Imagine a black singer and all the background tracks still would fit. Nice but do not expect too much. OTOH I like her straightahead singing style better than the over-sophisticated-Sarah-Vaughan-goes-soul outings of Rachelle Ferrell or Anita Baker ..... Give her time. I hoped for a voice that would move me as much as Laura Nyro. She should check her out.

Any date by the Kenny Clarke - Francy Boland Big Band or smaller sized ensemble will get my vote here.

It won't change behavior - you just watch out better so you're not getting caught next time. It does change educational behavior: If you have been beaten it is more likely you will beat your children because that was the role model.

Miles Davis Brad Mehldau Archie Shepp David Murray Freddie Hubbard Joe Zawinul Jaco Pastorius Michael Jackson They all deserve some praise, but I'm sick of hearing about them. But the last name in the list is a lot overpraised.
-
I stand corrected: Tom Lord has it right! Some Zawinul mystification. I probably mixed this up with some similar case - I am not sure I ever had that Zawinul on LP to try it out.

I think their customer service is not great. But the complete catalogue can be browsed online too: http://www.fantasyjazz.com/html/catalog_main.html ... and the whole catalogue is available for download as a pdf file on this page, just like I thought it should be. Since you have to look for LP issues at the bottom of each entry in the online catalogue the LPs might be easier to find in the pdf file using the search function.
-
Well that's largely due to Roy Du Nann's great engineering for Contemporary - but the LP pressings from Fantasy I have are all good.
-
This is wrong - see my initial listing, which is correct in that respect. CD titles correspond to the titles of the main LPs they reissued, each with one bonus track from a sampler.
-
The "alternate" was included on the Verve Master Edition CD of "The Dynamic Duo" as they had overlooked it at the time of the "Further Adventures" reissue!
-
If you refer to the last track Arrival in New York: No cows here - if you have an LP and play that last track at 45 rpm, you will hear noises from New York haven and excerpts from the previous tracks.
-
I still think it's unlikely - you underestimate the number of sessions Lucky did from the start of the LP era: If I start with his 1953 Deccas I count (sessions, not LPs!): - 5 as a leader, 13 as a sideman until his first trip to Paris in February 1956 - 14 as a leader, 1 as a sideman in Paris until May 1956 (!!!) - 2 as a leader, 20 as a sideman in New York until his return to Paris in June 1957 - 4 as a leader, 10 as a sideman in Europe until his return to the U.S. in 1963 - 11 as a leader, 3 as a sideman in Europe and the U.S. until the end of his recording career in 1974, not counting numerous unofficial live reordings. Where should they start, where should they draw the line? I don't see it. Especially as most (not all) of the Paris recordings was reissued on single CDs over the years. All of this would add up to about 20 CDs, even if one leaves off the large band dates where he (presumably) did only section work he did at least one solo on any of the orchestra dates he played on. That's a lot of stuff!!! Let's lobby for this with the new Savoy owners!!! Even if this would not include the two Jackson sessions with Lucky for Atlantic.
-
Atlantic's sound never was on the level of Columbia or others around that time - that considered, the CD sounds okay to me. Unpedictable whether there will be a new remastering - I doubt, as long as the older CD is available. All US Atlantic remastering I bought were okay so far - be careful about one European series claiming to replicate "original LP sound"!
-
No CD reissue of this so far, sorry. Not even in Japan. But a used copy of the double LP should be relatively easy to find.
-
This is not a duet - it has the orchestra backing them as on the previous tracks!
-
Well, I was too lazy to type out orchestra personnel details ... -_- There are indeed two different takes of O.G.D. - Bruyninckx copies that error from Ruppli. But I checked the issue numbers - my listing has them correct. The CD reissues confirm these.

Found it! Click here!

Sorry, can't find it - must have been on the occasion of some other Wes item being discussed.
-
There was a thread about Wes 'n' Trane here. So far nothing has surfaced, and it is more than doubtful there ever will.

Yes, very sad news! R.I.P. Gil Mellé. His Blue Note and Prestige albums have a unique quality to them.
-
R.I.P. I have always enjoyed some of his music. He would have deserved more recognition, that's for sure.
