  1. Bruyninckx gives ca. 1966 as year of recording, which sounds reasonable, but hasn't any personnel either - sorry. I only have a compilation of tracks from his two "Bossa Nova" LPs for Capitol, and though it's extremely well played and the musicians are top pros, I wish they had gone a little less commercial. They were capable of much hotter playing than allowed.
  2. Oh yes, your royal highness, you did, and it was the inspiration to include the Earl Hines track with Betty Roché on my BFT! Like this album very much, thanks again!
  3. The first record player my parents gave me was a used one from my sister-in-law, mono, and when I had learned that they used needles to track the grooves in the early days, I took a pin and did just that! Held my ears close to the needle to hear something other than that biased mono, in fact it was some kind of weird stereo ..... I ruined a track on Cream's Disraeli Gears LP that way ...
  4. Just received the Crown Hawk - a ***** affair!!!! Excellent sound, and even better playing by all involved - get this!!!
  5. OPERA here, too, and looks smooth. Nice design!
  6. Ironically, this drummer - who recorded with Sonny's Stitt and Rollins - was criticized even by Michael Cuscuna of not being up to par with the rest of the band. Strangely this is one of the Griffin's I never really warmed up with - even after several attempts.
  7. Universal is handling the distribution - I don't know if that effects the catalogue as such. But considering the urgent tone of Steve Hofmann's warning, and the fact that so many Concord titles are unavailable, a much lower percentage of their catalogue is in print compared to Fantasy - well, I decided to buy the last Tjader and Don Patterson items missing in my collection months ago.
  8. Here's a Reuters press release posted by Steve Hofman (see link in the initial post): Here's the Reuers message linked just above: The CCR recordings are included in this deal!
  9. I once lent a copy of the first LP of a local band, Zyma, to a drummer friend - we both joined a later edition of that band, and I got the last copy they had. It was well played and even better recorded at Tonstudio Bauer in Ludwigsburg, which ECM used often during its early years. When I wanted to pick it up a few weeks later some roommate of his had tossed it around without an inner sleeve - it was ruined forever ...... I nearly killed that guy!
  10. I have done exactly this more than once. Who is the trumpet player on this? Is it Freddie? Lee Morgan.
  11. ..... now that's what I can't get enough of .....
  12. As long as this involves only distribution, not the catalogue, it might be positive, as the CDs are more easily accessible - Universal's distribution is worldwide. Don't know how this will affect ZYX' European distribution deal with Fantasy. Concord is currently handled in Europe by even another distributor - all these deals will have to be re-negotiated before they run out.
  13. The argument/misunderstanding between Monk ands his producer at Columbia, Teo Macero (as seen in the Straight No Chaser documentary), lead me to thinking that their relationship was not ideal and Monk might not have felt respected enough with the label. Now we all know how reacted toward this ..... At the time of the Black Lion recordings he had been asked to take part in the Giants of Jazz tour, and to make these recordings, and as usual rewarded his producer with some inspired playing. Forget what any lukewarm reviews say - these are great! But also somewhat different from earlier Monk. Comparing the solos here with earlier versions is more than interesting.
  14. Yeah, Bennie Green - smooth as silk and very melodic.
  15. Cecil Payne is one of the pioneers, but still alive. Where are Leo Parker and Tate Houston? Sorry I can't choose - I love these two and Chaloff and Payne and Carney and .....
  16. Not yet, AFAIK - he has some health problems, but still performs, and has released a new CD earlier this year.
  17. Welcome aboard! Heard your playing first on Johnny Griffin's CDs and still like it a lot! Anything else on CD after that? (Stoopid question!!! Just checked your website ... )
  18. Among old school soul bassists, I like Jerry Jemmott the best.
  19. Julian Priester !!!!! Latest release
  20. You got the right LP, Guy, but after checking my Fresh Sound LP reissue - which sounds a bit better, BTW - I found out it is track 8 - the Fresh Sound has a different track order, though - click on the (Trio) CD title on this page to get track details - it is track 6 on this issue.
  21. That Joe Locke picture simply reflects what many people in the business expect - not us jazz fans. You want to eat ... Locke is a good musician, I think he strikes the balance between that dreaded virtuoso perfectionism and personal ways of expression pretty well. The vibes are hard to play as an expressive instrument. I will have a listen to that organ band tomorrow, if they have it in stock where I go.

I'm sure they will cover these in 2006 ....
  23. As much as I appreciate Mosaic's work, "cover art" is paying them too much of a compliment. A black & white photo on a black background with white print - that's so basic it could be done by any beginning design student. The music, sound and essays are all first rate, but the design is very basic. Add a little color and lettering, and you get a much more attractive desgin, like this, which I love to look at much more than any Mosaic:
  24. The Canadian government should me made aware of this and change it immediately to avoid future claims on their territory!
  25. I'm pretty sure this is not true: AFAIK the Australian Budgerigar was domesticated only after Europeans settled there.
