Coltrane's Village Vanguard Box set is my favorite probably. There's not a single bad note at that set. It's one of the few sets where I really don't mind the fact that there are four takes of the same track on it.
That's a good call
I'd also add a vote for Peter Brötzmann's two sets '3 Nights In Oslo' and 'Long Story Short'

Fascinating record from a Hungarian group recording with John Tchicai. I hear influences by Albert Ayler, Abdullah Ibrahim and Pharoah Sanders. Some free passages, spiritual jazz, free improvisation and compositional music. Pretty adventurous stuff. I’d call this my 2024 discovery for now.
Perhaps some prejudice of me but I did not expect a 1983 record from Hungary to sound so good!
Maybe they already know it but I am pretty sure this is the league of @mjazzg@Rabshakeh@soulpope and perhaps also @HutchFan
Nice one. Yes, I have it and was equally pleased when I bought mine. Haven't listened to it for a while but shall dig it out
Whilst talking about Tchicai, have you got this one @Pim? Not to be missed

His most recent release

His Discogs shows at least 4 releases since 2020. Definitely still active

Played London last year with the quartet featured on Intakt

Billy Harper - Capra Black [Strata East, 1973]
I really should play this more often

Sorry, I was referring to my Belgian classical purchase.
I checked (my most likely suspects: DMG, Squidco, DG and Forced Exposure) yesterday and did not find any US dealers stocking the Ahmed box. Although Dusty Groove showed an upcoming 2-LP set on Astral Spirits (iirc) that might be a subset of the box.
The Astral Spirits is not a subset. Different concert, from Glasgow.
I bought my copy from Seymour Wright in person the other day and had a very pleasant short chat with him. He was very pleased with how both the box set and the AS double LP have come out.
I haven't listened to the LP release yet.

Based on the bandcamp site quoting price in Swedish Krona (SEK), I assume Sweden.
I initially stopped there, BUT on review the shipping fee is actually quite reasonable, although I expect the effective exchange rate (net of credit card or Paypal surcharge) to be less favorable than quoted:
"that’s $45.69 USD, plus $9.59 shipping for United States."
That's less than I paid and I collected it from Café Oto!

I used to look at Burning Ambulance a fair bit before it went to Substack, not sure why not since. It covered a breadth of music, not just Jazz but predominantly so. It was always very readable.
I'm hoping this will be good. CT deserves that at the very least, lots to get in.

The box set is very good indeed. I wasn't able to get to the Oto residency they did last week, bet that was blistering

Saw James Brandon Lewis last night at the Vortex, with his touring Quartet of Aruán Ortiz, Brad Jones and Chad Taylor.
Not a group that I like that much on record but I found them very absorbing live, particularly Jones and Taylor. As is often the case, music that can seem a little wandering on record makes sense when you can see the players in action.
Chad Taylor's always good
I can't seem to get Brandon Lewis, all a bit blustery

Makes sense to make their releases available on a platform and retail outlet that is very widely used

Awen Ensemble - Cadair Idris
Strong debut, fits nicely into the British pastoral Jazz lineage

Just got to 'The Bear'.
Wasn't sure how it would stack up against all the hype and plaudits.
A couple of episodes in and I can that it might

I bought the 5CD box set of [ahmed], two discs in and it's a blast. They're certainly developing a signature sound, possibly not for everyone, that's taking the acoustic quartet to places it rarely visits.

I bought the String Quartets as a leap of faith as much as anything else as I don't ordinarily listen to the format very much at all.
As a big WLS fan I thought why not. They've definitely repaid my listening and give an enlightening perspective on his other writing. Without stating the obvious they sound to me very like WLS music and I'd say any fan of his would find them an interesting listen. There's variation and development across the set although as mentioned above the guests aren't providing a lot of that.
How they compare to others' string quartets I'm not qualified to comment.
I didn't buy 'Emerald Duets' as I already have a lot of WLS in duet but would love to hear the Bennink.
As for ' Chicago Symphonies', I think I'm a bit of an outlier in finding that set a little underwhelming, maybe expectations were too high given the line up.
I'm very excited about the mention of an Amina Claudine Myers collaboration. I'll buy that one.

Celebrating the Henry Mancini Centenary, April 16, 2024.
Now playing:
The Blues and the Beat (RCA Victor, Living Stereo)
The track "The Blues" is like a template for Angelo Badalamenti's work for David Lynch.
That's great

Yes, Andre 3000 stole my seat. But seriously, the Shabaka concert at Big Ears was a great concert, one of the very best I heard at the Festival.
That's good to hear. I'm excited to hear how he presents his new music

To be honest I haven't really noticed either way, my expectations are never too high with ESP. I need to relisten
Listening to the Base now @Pim. It sounds pretty good I have to say
12 minutes ago, kh1958 said:At the Shabaka Big Ears concert, my preferred seating at the Bijou Theater (a balcony above the right side of the stage) was blocked off and reserved for some "VIPs." So I went to the Balcony on the other side. I assume it was for Andre 3000 and his entourage, who also was performing at the Festival. The theater was kept very dark throughout the concert, so you could not see who it was, and at the end of the concert when the lights came up, the VIPs had been safely escorted away (whew!).
I have tickets for Shabaka in London in a few weeks but the Barbican venue doesn't have boxes so Andre 3000 will have to slum it with the rest of us in the unlikelihood he turns up 😀
