  1. wtbs- the first superstation. for several years, tbs replayed the braves games in the night owl hours, and i usually watched the games after working second shift. ernie, funny irreverant skip caray, and pete van wieren. i haven't enjoyed baseball as much since. i knew the braves players of the time like members of my family. the crew doubled up on radio(powerhouse wsb) as well. the highly professional ernie and pete played straight men for comedian caray. ironically ernie's death was announced during tonight's braves-cubs game where longtime braves manger bobby cox was honored. for old times sake, the plate umpire 'threw' cox out of the game. uggla extended his hitting streak to 32 with 2 home runs. not to be outdone, cub pitcher carlos zambrano performed his annual locker clean out-i'm retiring tantrum. memories of the hilarious tbs late night 'newscaster'' bill tush return, as well. tush never translated his humor into a wider career, which really surprised me. i remember ernie's dry slightly hoarse measured voice. RIP ernie. you were a class act. unintentionally hilarious longtime yankee radiocaster john sterling was part of that tbs baseball crew for a time. i seem to recall sterling telecasting some atlanta hawks basketball games, as well.
  2. started sibelius 7(beginning) wien bernstein
  3. how many of these items did tunis spit out??? they were my bedside books of the time, after i'd read madd. they had their harlequins; we had our john r. tunis.
  4. nonagenerian dave has cancelled a detroit festival perfomance. does anyone have word on his health issues?

  6. .and the timeless beauty of EACH game could be savored.
  7. yeah, but then it is resolved in blasphemously short series, kind of like quickie sex. to make baseball really cool, there should be no playoffs to speak of between the leagues, and all seeding should be left to endless pointless mindless espn buffoonery and conjecture(kind of like bigtime college footbal and religion)
  8. i think he's up to .221 now. the great beauty of baseball is its incongruity and it's timelessness(no clock).
  9. that's very early 20s??? thx.
  10. i have here a big set of programs that mel made for a new york radio station in the late 80s discussing the history of jazz drumming. mel definitely pulled no punches. i consider very few things sacred. the rusches and cadence are on the very small list. sadly, i have outgrown all my cadence tees, and the crews are now history. gotta pick up some more. they would make part of a classy burial getup.
  11. to my great surprise this complete ladd's black aces(1921-1924) recording lists jimmy durante playing piano. can anyone fill in the blanks?
  12. The sinner gonna do what the sinner gonna do, be it to get right or to stay wrong. That's one thing. Those of us who get hit by their shit, we got the same choices as the sinner. That's another thing. Ain't nobody ever "all right", and I don't know that even the darkest souls are "all wrong", so pretty much everything comes down to this what choices do you make? After that, it's a pinball machine. Don't run out of quarters. are you a writer, jim? if you aren't, you need to be.
  13. i have long felt that this board was composed of the most honest, sensitive, thoughtful, intelligent, and articulate folks anywhere. now i know it.
  14. thanks. i will do that a wee bit later. there are, of course, a few notable exceptions(cherry).
  15. very rarely do i find any 'world' music interesting. what i usually hear is just a whole lot of homogenized nothing. 'world' music is really just a 'clever' way to avoid using the obscene term 'jazz', a modern day marketing and financial disaster.
  16. i would like to hear her peers opinions of her, when they were sitting at the bar. foundation awards are little more than politics and skillful grant application writing. i remember a very very moving interview several years ago when she was discussing her need to get a really good violin. one cannot but like and admire regina, the person.
  17. thanks, all-- you folks always come through-- there are several lil selections on youtube-- i wont sell my love---
  18. i was just enjoying 6 or 7 selections by 1940s chicago blues singer, new to me, lil green. the humor in her singing was tastefully risque, her voice was edgy, but dry, with wit and earthy humor, and one can hear hints of later blues singers in her work. clearly, lil was a trendsetter. have there been "o" threads on lil?
