THIS SAD NEWS COMES FROM ARTIST CATHERINE RUSSELL WITH NO DETAILS. CARRIE SMITH Carrie Smith (born Carrie Louise Smith, August 25, 1941, Fort Gaines, Georgia)[1] is an American blues and jazz singer. Smith was a member of a church choir that performed at the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival. She first won notice singing with Big Tiny Little in the early 1970s, but became internationally known in 1974 when she played Bessie Smith (to whom she is of no relation) in Dick Hyman's Satchmo Remembered at Carnegie Hall.[1] Smith then launched a solo career, performing with the New York Jazz Repertory Orchestra, Tyree Glenn (1973), Yank Lawson (1987), Bross Townsend, and the World's Greatest Jazz Band in addition to numerous solo albums. She starred in the Broadway musical Black and Blue from 1989 to 1991.[2] She is not well known in the United States but has a cult following in Europe.[1] The liner notes to CD reissue of Only You Can Do It feature laudatory remarks from jazz critics Rex Reed, Leonard Feather, Richard Sudhalter, and John C. Wilson.

i want to see cassettes come back. nothing better than a tape coming unwound and trying to reel it back in using a pencil through one of the center gears, maybe if you were brave enough opening the cassette up and trying to piece it back together. anyone remember doing that? -

Wow. I'm moved and humbled. But please do not expect anything approaching perfection despite everyone's talent and best intentions. I only sat w/the singers yesterday and not w/the band yet-w/a very ambitious program. The odd train wreck will happen in the best of...etc. But I believe in the material and performers-and myself, so we'll do our best... that's the beauty of this jazz thing. there will also be many gorgeous moments of feeling that can never happen again which can't possibly be rehearsed or scripted... i can't wait.

link Latest music organization to enter the tight local real estate market: the Jazz Gallery, which lost the lease on its loft at Hudson and Spring streets after 17 years. Moving an ongoing venture at any time is painful, but seldom worse than right now in Manhattan, where the Gallery wants to stay. Still, the can-do spirit that has exemplified the Gallery since its founding prevails. Executive director Deborah Steinglass takes the task as an opportunity for growth, calling the effort “A Home Run.” The Gallery is a unique venue that has introduced scores of progressive musicians at modest prices to local audiences while also exhibiting jazz-related visual art. It’s a 501©(3) nonprofit organization, neither bar nor restaurant but low-key listening room, with good sight lines and folding chairs. It’s larger than The Stone, its nearest relative aesthetically speaking (but way across town), and the vibe is more relaxed. It was established in 1996 by Dale Fitzgerald, who retired three years ago to work as business manager to trumpeter Roy Hargrove (also present at the Gallery’s birth), and has been booked since 2000 by Rio Sakairi.
