  1. What do you guys think of this? 'Moon Cups' amazes me. I went from laughing to listening to liking, back to laughing, then listening again, not liking, laughing again and now I'm currently at 'liking'. For me the Atlantic stuff is weaker than either his Prestige or Impulse! recordings. I picked up '1984' a few days ago but have just given it a cursory listen so far. The only real dud I have by him is 'Nocturnes' from 1989. Dull and one-paced.
  2. I prefer this, the RVG Edition cover from 2006. Shame it's the 'copy protected' release. Better cropping of the photo IMO. It's above average Morgan but a lot of moolah. If they want to issue 'New Land' in this series I could be tempted.
  3. That one is on Columbia, actually. Blythe playing Monk, I didn't know about this one. I shall be scouring the Tokyo record stores, it may prove a challenge to locate and be priced accordingly.
  4. Try 'Rejoice' from the previous year, some great playing on that one. With Elvin, Hutcherson, Billy Higgins and Joe Bonner. Pharaoh re-visits some Coltrane material.
  5. Actually, no, it's a different take, different year, different band. Yes, but not the two tracks I highlighted in red...those two (including "Procession") have never been released. Actually I'm particularly interested in "Photon..." which is a Cowell tune that showed up on some of his own records. I'm not a Hutcherson completist, but I am definitely a Hutcherson/Land completist. I wondered about this. I'm sure this is all very wishful thinking on my part that any of these would see the light of day...but as mentioned in the previous post I'm a pretty diehard fan of the Hutcherson/Land groups in particular and am always hungry for more. And while they're at it they could throw in the stuff with Cochran. Apologies for my lack of precision. I should have realized that when you wrote 'rejected' you meant just that. I won't be wading in to discussions in discographies without reading posts more carefully. The version of 'Procession' I referred to is indeed different. As others have said, BN didn't release rejected material that didn't have the requisite 'schwang' that Alfred required.
  6. 'Procession' shows up on the 'San Francisco' release with Land. Assume it's the same version. If you have the 'Connoisseur' series Blue Note 'Medina' than you have the 'Spiral' material. I'm not enough of a Hutcherson completist to lose sleep over rejected takes to be honest. Love his stuff with Land in general.
  7. EWF were the first artists I really got into as a teenager. 'I Am' was the first vinyl album I ever bought. A few months later I bought a box set containing 'All 'n All', 'Spirit' and 'That's The Way Of The World' back when I was 16 and those 3 albums absolutely mesmerised me. Picking a top five is nigh on impossible, a top 25 would be more like it. In no order of preference, ask me tomorrow I'd choose a different 5. 1. Can't Hide Love- incredible vocal arrangement. 2. Magic Mind- the brass kicks ass! 3. Sun Goddess- Andrew Woolfolk's Coltrane homage sax solo. 4. Boogie Wonderland- so much happening in a mere 'disco' tune. Wonderful vocal performances and listen carefully to the string arrangements, Ellingtonian in concept. 5. Runnin'-real musicians at work. On a side note, whenever I hear 'Departure' from the 'Spirit' album I think 'Mingus'. Anybody else get that feeling?
  8. Recently got into Eric Alexander. I started with 'Man With a Horn' and was sold. He's really 'in the tradition'. He seems to have a pretty big discography and a lovely sound. Something of a light heavyweight to my ears- between 'Trane and Mobley. I can pick up his early Criss Cross output pretty cheaply at the Disk Union stores in Tokyo.
