  1. What is the heart of jazz? Improvisation What are five words to describe jazz? Swing, Melody, Energy, Fun, Colorful Would you prefer an intimate venue or one that is more open and grand? Intimate If you are a performer, how do you like your audience to be around you? Appreciative Do you prefer an elevated platform or a flat surface for entertaining? Somewhat elevated What kinds of things would make you not want to go to a certain place to see jazz? Too many unattentive people in the audience. What are the top five things you think should be covered in a jazz museum? History, Sociological Aspects, Art [incl. photography, painting, etc.], special exhibits highlighting one artist, an era, ..., regular concerts (it's about the music, after all) What colors to you think embody the world of jazz? Blue, Black, White, Red Do you see jazz in black and white or in color? Both If you could relate jazz to an architectural style, which style would it be? Warm, inviting and somewhat intimate (whatever that comes out to be) What would make you feel comfortable in an instrumental classroom setting? Intimate, homely atmosphere
  2. Yep. Cool. Thanks a lot!
  3. I found this weird live CD I burned (years ago?). Since I don't really know squat about Davis when it comes round to discographical stuff, here's a track listing (which might be inaccurate): Disk 01: Jilli Hannibal Intruder Star People Perfect Way Mr. Pastorius Human Nature Disk 02: Tutu Time after Time Full Nelson Me and You Carnival Time Whenever I look for "Time After Time", I get hits which have different tracks. So, what is this and, especially, who put it out when? Thanks for your help. P.S.: The sound quality is, err, more of the vanilla version type ... I think I'll trash it. I'm still curious though.
  4. This suggests that only a smaller number of NANOs has problems. Apple admits ...
  5. Read it on some Apple forums. Just have a look around yourself - the relevant posts are not that difficult to find. For example, this one: One random example (Had to wade through three pages of spam on the forums to find it ... someone just spammed the forums with about 200 messages ... I wonder if they're going to clean that up before you get there ...) Still, I think the NANO is a great idea and I will definitely buy one once the problems are ironed out. Sales figures already now show that there's great demand for this type of player. Let's hope Apple fixes the problems fast so they don't scare potential customers away.
  6. That Nano player is nothing but trouble for anyone outside of the Apple community (and for many within). Besides the scratch issues there have also been quite a number of complaints about charging the player fully (people report that the player has virtually died on them after a few tunes or already after having loaded it with tracks) and the batteries not lasting nearly as long as stated by Apple (they tell you not to skip tunes to save on battery life which, IMHO, takes all the fun out of the thing). And don't get me started on iTunes. That thing is a pain in the neck on Windows machines. Why I can't just transfer tunes via the player as a removable drive is beyond me (you can, btw: there's a plugin for Winamp which gets around all the iTunes bull) ... With my old player I just plug it in, transfer via USB 2 and ... bingo. I was looking forward to getting a Nano as a second portable player, but I guess I'll wait until things have been ironed out. If Apple doesn't take care of things, I'm sure the iPod case, modding and supply cottage industry will take over in a second.

As far as getting along with the cats, it’s just the same as my other jobs. But for one thing, I probably get more notice taken of me—because they can’t miss me. And, not so much here in England or even Europe, but in the States a lot of times we’ll be playing and we’ll notice somebody looking up. Then he’ll whisper to the guy next to him, then they’ll both look, and whisper again. They’re trying to figure out whether I’m coloured or white. Fip Ricard and I have a little act we go through whenever we see this. He’ll wave to them and make signs towards me to indicate: “Yes, he’s white.” Naturally I consider it a great compliment to be a member of the band, because there haven’t really been that many white players on the band. Most of my musician friends in the States have told me that they feel it’s about the greatest compliment that could be paid to a white musician.[...]'"
  8. From a conversation with him I vaguely remembered that Fip played with Ed Thigpen's dad in the Andy Kirk Orchestra. Here's the only info I could unearth via Google: ANDY KIRK AND HIS ORCHESTRA : Andy Kirk-dir / Fip Ricard-John Lynch-Clarence Trice-unknown-t / Milton Robinson-Henry Wells-Wayman Richardson-Bob Murray-tb / Joe Evans-Reuben Phillips-as / Jimmy Forrest-Eddie Davis-ts / John Porter-bs / Hank Jones-p / Floyd Smith-g / Al Hall-b / Ben Thigpen-d / The Jubalaires-v New York, May 23, 1946 73590 I Don't Know What I'd Do Without You /Decca 18916 73591 I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry /Decca 18916 Edit: also found this brief obituary: "Fortunatas Paul "FIP" Ricard, 72, a veteran trumpet player who performed for 23 years with the Sammy Davis, Jr. Band, of a heart attack at Daniel Freeman Hospital in California."
  9. I'd like a shot at it whenever the ones signed up have had a go. Can somone PM me when the time comes? I'll be on less these upcoming weeks.
  10. Well, I give up. The only other info I could unearth is that there must've been a Buddy de Franco disk in the series as well.
  11. Well, if anyone has more info I'd appreciate it. I've been searching Google thin, but so far no luck. Maybe I'm also too dumb. Thanks!
  12. Yes. Thanks Chuck. I assume it's some European job.
  13. I just came across a text which mentioned an Art Pepper CD entitled "Jazz Masters". No further info, but with the following titles supposedly on there: 01 - The way you look tonight 02 - Softly, as in a morning sunrise 03 -Airegin 04 - Anthropology 05 - Whims of Chambers 06 - Rhythm-a-ning 07 - Opus de funk 08 - 'Round midnight 09 - Why are we afraid 10 - Gettin' together 11 - Walkin' shoes 12 - Shaw nuff Does anyone have anymore info (label, release date) on this CD, if it existed/exists? I was unable to find any via Google. Thanks Edit: On freedb.org it's listed without any additional info as "The Jazz Masters". Is that that weird French 100 years series?
  14. I've been searching for more space for all the stuff I find all the time. THAT is the real problem. Once your collection(s) push(es) you out of your own front door, it is time to see a shrink ... or rent storage space. Hell, I might have to sleep in the bathroom soon. Off to ... ... rent some storage space.
  15. Also to Europe/Germany? ← Well, I don't know. Can anyone with experience tell me how much it'd cost and how one can insure package? ← Sorry about the trouble. I just checked my finances and it's not in it for me this month or next. I apparently ordered too much elsewhere.
  16. Also to Europe/Germany?
  17. When are we going to have a "Play Like Sonny Rollins Day"?
  18. I have difficulties adding my picks here for two reasons: 01) My picks were already mentioned I don't know how many times. 02) I often have problems picking a whole album as the one and only pick for that artist. Case in point. Some of the best work Ella Fitzgerald ever did was recorded with Count Basie (Ella and Basie, Verve), such as "Honeysuckle Rose" and "I'm Beginning to See the Light". Several of the other tunes on that release don't do it for me though and I would probably go and look elsewhere for more. Or Paul Desmond? Or Getz? Or Teddy Wilson? Or the man himself, Basie? There isn't one album that I could pick. Call me indecisive. So, I would do it in the true European fashion, burn myself a CDR with out-of-copyright stuff of one artist and nominate that here. P.S.: Someone suggested a thread for songs that pulled one in, made one look for more songs by that artist. That I would have plenty to contribute to. P.S.S: Why does O. Peterson's Startford disk always show up in these lists? I know all the reviews etc., but it's one example for an artist where I would pick something else (and I'm nearing the 100 disk OP mark ... yeah, I know, shoot me). Yes, it swings, but the audio quality is horrible, and some of the London House cuts do much more for me, although we're talking a different OP trio and sound here. To contribute something, here's an ecclectic off-the-top-of-my-head-list: Shorty Rogers [short Stops] Clifford Brown [Clifford Brown and Max Roach] Bob Brookmeyer [Traditionalism Revisited] Lee Konitz [Motion] Ben Webster [ben Webster and Associates] Coleman Hawkins [Hawk Flies High] Jimmy Giuffre [1961] Benny Goodman [undercurrent Blues] Joe Williams [at Newport] Joe Mooney [Do You Long for Oolong] Ella Fitzgerald [Ella at Duke's Place] Benny Carter [Further Definitions] Ray Brown Trio [Live at Starbucks] Ralph Sutton [Wondrous Piano: The Private Family Recordings 1961] Peterson/Webster [ben Webster Meets Oscar Peterson] Lester Young [Complete Aladdin Recordings] Flanagan,Tommy [Lady Be Good: For Ella] Fred Astaire [steppin' Out] Una Mae Carlisle [The complete Una Mae Carlisle, RCA] ... time to sleep ... more another day ...
  19. How are these things powered? Does one have to dish out the price of the player to get new rechargable Apple thingies? If yes, no thanks. If no, I'm off to the store ...
  20. Also late, but ... ... Happy Birthday!
  21. I hate to disagree here, but I think he makes an excellent poodle. I wonder how many blow dryers the guy went through in his life. I think her might have single-handedly sustained an entire industry.
  22. I think this one should be in the top ten: (coverdale/lord/marsden/moody/murray/paice) I ain’t an educated man As all you fleet street preachers know, It’s just the simple things in life Get my motor running, ready to go If I can make you smile I will raise my glass, An’ if you don’t like it Then, baby, you can kiss my ass! You can tell me it’s wrong, But, I love wine, women an’ song Give me a good time woman, An’ a love potion bottle of booze ’cos I got a juke box heart Full of honky tonk rhythm an’ blues You better lock up your daughter, your sister too, If get in my way, I’m gonna rock an’ roll over you, Ain’t nothing you can do You can tell it’s wrong, But I love wine, women an’ song Wine, women an’ song, talking ’bout Wine, women an’ song, Wine, women an’ song, Wine, women an’ song You get what you can But, don’t take too long Wine, women an’ song, Give me a rock an’ roll band With a mean an’ dirty blues guitar, Take me to a dance hall palace With a twenty four hour bar Then you better lock up your daughter, your sister too, If you get in my way, I’m gonna rock an’ roll over you, Ain’t nothing you can do You can tell me it’s wrong, But I love wine, women an’ song Wine, women an’ song, talking ’bout Wine, women an’ song, Wine, women an’ song, Wine, women an’ song You get what you can But, don’t take too long, Wine, women an’ song Wine, women an’ song, Wine, women an’ song, Wine, women an’ song You get what you can But, don’t take too long, Wine, women an’ song Wine, women an’ song
