  1. When are we going to have a "Play Like Sonny Rollins Day"?
  2. I have difficulties adding my picks here for two reasons: 01) My picks were already mentioned I don't know how many times. 02) I often have problems picking a whole album as the one and only pick for that artist. Case in point. Some of the best work Ella Fitzgerald ever did was recorded with Count Basie (Ella and Basie, Verve), such as "Honeysuckle Rose" and "I'm Beginning to See the Light". Several of the other tunes on that release don't do it for me though and I would probably go and look elsewhere for more. Or Paul Desmond? Or Getz? Or Teddy Wilson? Or the man himself, Basie? There isn't one album that I could pick. Call me indecisive. So, I would do it in the true European fashion, burn myself a CDR with out-of-copyright stuff of one artist and nominate that here. P.S.: Someone suggested a thread for songs that pulled one in, made one look for more songs by that artist. That I would have plenty to contribute to. P.S.S: Why does O. Peterson's Startford disk always show up in these lists? I know all the reviews etc., but it's one example for an artist where I would pick something else (and I'm nearing the 100 disk OP mark ... yeah, I know, shoot me). Yes, it swings, but the audio quality is horrible, and some of the London House cuts do much more for me, although we're talking a different OP trio and sound here. To contribute something, here's an ecclectic off-the-top-of-my-head-list: Shorty Rogers [short Stops] Clifford Brown [Clifford Brown and Max Roach] Bob Brookmeyer [Traditionalism Revisited] Lee Konitz [Motion] Ben Webster [ben Webster and Associates] Coleman Hawkins [Hawk Flies High] Jimmy Giuffre [1961] Benny Goodman [undercurrent Blues] Joe Williams [at Newport] Joe Mooney [Do You Long for Oolong] Ella Fitzgerald [Ella at Duke's Place] Benny Carter [Further Definitions] Ray Brown Trio [Live at Starbucks] Ralph Sutton [Wondrous Piano: The Private Family Recordings 1961] Peterson/Webster [ben Webster Meets Oscar Peterson] Lester Young [Complete Aladdin Recordings] Flanagan,Tommy [Lady Be Good: For Ella] Fred Astaire [steppin' Out] Una Mae Carlisle [The complete Una Mae Carlisle, RCA] ... time to sleep ... more another day ...
  3. How are these things powered? Does one have to dish out the price of the player to get new rechargable Apple thingies? If yes, no thanks. If no, I'm off to the store ...
  4. Also late, but ... ... Happy Birthday!
  5. I hate to disagree here, but I think he makes an excellent poodle. I wonder how many blow dryers the guy went through in his life. I think her might have single-handedly sustained an entire industry.
  6. I think this one should be in the top ten: (coverdale/lord/marsden/moody/murray/paice) I ain’t an educated man As all you fleet street preachers know, It’s just the simple things in life Get my motor running, ready to go If I can make you smile I will raise my glass, An’ if you don’t like it Then, baby, you can kiss my ass! You can tell me it’s wrong, But, I love wine, women an’ song Give me a good time woman, An’ a love potion bottle of booze ’cos I got a juke box heart Full of honky tonk rhythm an’ blues You better lock up your daughter, your sister too, If get in my way, I’m gonna rock an’ roll over you, Ain’t nothing you can do You can tell it’s wrong, But I love wine, women an’ song Wine, women an’ song, talking ’bout Wine, women an’ song, Wine, women an’ song, Wine, women an’ song You get what you can But, don’t take too long Wine, women an’ song, Give me a rock an’ roll band With a mean an’ dirty blues guitar, Take me to a dance hall palace With a twenty four hour bar Then you better lock up your daughter, your sister too, If you get in my way, I’m gonna rock an’ roll over you, Ain’t nothing you can do You can tell me it’s wrong, But I love wine, women an’ song Wine, women an’ song, talking ’bout Wine, women an’ song, Wine, women an’ song, Wine, women an’ song You get what you can But, don’t take too long, Wine, women an’ song Wine, women an’ song, Wine, women an’ song, Wine, women an’ song You get what you can But, don’t take too long, Wine, women an’ song Wine, women an’ song
  7. Lately, lots of sites have gone to 1024 * 768. That automatically leads to scrolling for many users out there.
  8. Looks like someone forgot to renew the domain.
  9. Thanks for your help! I'll hit the "Buy Now" button today.
  10. Could you check if there is any "revised/updated" whatever notice in the pb? I'm a hardcover guy and I'd rather get that one (also good prices on that one).
  11. Thanks for the tip. I'll check it out. P.S.: There's also a paperback edition from 2001. Does anyone know if the discography has been updated/any changes to the book? Otherwise I would go for the hardcover (1996).
  12. Hi everyone, I'm trying to fill the many holes in my probably far too limited Teddy Wilson collection. To avoid getting too much overlap between the stuff available from I don't know how many labels, both rip-off and not, I need some sort of online discography or the like (I can't afford any of those disk-based discographies). Can anyone point me towards anything on the net that could help me progress? I haven't been successful at all, although usually I'm quite good at unearthing this kind of stuff. Thanks. P.S.: I have the Mosaic, all the Hep and all the Storyville CDs.
  13. Does it fry eggs as well?
  14. Word!
  15. Here's a link with updates on many, many of my favourite NO musicians ...: Rebirth Brass Band Forum
  16. I just had a very quick glance through my collection spanning about 20 meters of just jazz CDs (not counting the CCR stuff in another section, etc.), and about roughly 5 of those 20 meters are Fantasy (Prestige, Riverside, Contemporary, Milestone, Pablo, ...) CDs. Looking at the catalogue(s) available at the moment, there are plenty more meters in there for me. I hope all the reissues are kept in print to give me the time to extend the collection.
  17. A monitor to go along with the keyboard ... Athens Monitors
  18. I'm simply stunned at the incompetence displayed here. I know this is a disaster of a magnitude which makes it very difficult to help fast and efficiently, but what I'm seeing on CNN and reading on the Net makes me think that the US seems to have a lot of efficient (well, sort of) plans when it comes around to helping others, but when their own people are dying, nobody seems to be able to get his/her head out of his/her rear end. I remember how efficiently the US airlifted supplies into Berlin way back when, etc., and now they can't get supplies to dying citizens in NO. WTF? Simply unbelievable. And very, very sad to see.
  19. Watching this unfold these past 24 hours, none of what the media said (and some TV stations were sadly and obviously waiting for) was overblown. This is a disaster of epic proportions. A very sad thing to watch as NO is/was my favourite city in the US (no disrespect intended for all the other cities). I was there more than 10 times because of that very reason. I hope and pray that it's not going to get as bad as it looks right now (and it looks like it will be of biblical proportions). Very sad.
  20. There's a *.pdf online. You can see what the box really looks like ... simple box stuffed with CDs. http://www.google.de/url?sa=t&ct=res&cd=2&...HKsfKwQGbxOzrDg
  21. Thanks, guys. I was away for a while, drinking my way through northern Germany. The birthday was more of a fringe benefit on that trip. Thanks, and cheers!
