Cut-and-paste copyright infringement ...
neveronfriday replied to neveronfriday's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I think the issue goes beyond economic interests. It has to because otherwise copyright as it is defined by law(s) today wouldn't make sense. Of course saying that it won't hurt anyone to copy sth people can read elsewhere for free helps one's own conscience when doing it, but I think it is hypocritical to say that if nobody loses any money (and on larger boards, maybe the original author/company does lose money because he/she/it loses readership and thereby, for example, income generated by click-through rates) it's ok. I do it myself, as stated above, but I don't go prancing around yelling when, for example, a European company "reissues" a recording out of copyright (but, when they "steal" the remastering, I think things do change majorly). I just shut up. The reason I really brought this up is because just a few days ago there was a major fight about copyright issues on another board where the various arguments were reinforced by ripped-off articles which were all copyrighted. In this one case it seemed to me that the "fight" for other artist's copyright was, for the individuals that did it in the way described above, more an "act" to get a clean and innocent image. But what they were saying was certainly not backed-up by any serious thought. Now if you do say that economic interests are the decisive point, at least that's honest. Then you can justify cut-and-paste jobs. But in the other discussion, many other thoughts were voiced (the artist's right to have a say in what's done with his work and where it appears, etc.), and I thought then things turned hypocritical. It has also happened here. Cheers! -

Is money really the only issue? -
Have you ever bought a recording by someone who you'd never heard of before on the strength or appeal of one number alone (not because someone recommended it)? And what were the results? Example: The other day I was listening to an Internet jazz radio station and a tune came on: Summertime. Because it was one of those stations that reruns a certain selection of tunes all day long, I heard that number several times and it just grew on me. The same evening I looked up the CD and bought it: Herb Pomeroy & Donna Byrne. Walking on Air. Arbors Records, 1997. Musicians: Herb Pomeroy (trumpet and flugelhorn), Donna Byrne (Vocals on 7 of 12 songs), Dave McKenna (piano), Gray Sargent (guitar), Marshall Wood (bass) and Jim Gwin (drums). In have to admit that besides Dave McKenna I had no idea about the other players. Today I got the CD, I love the version of Summertime on it and there are other good/very good tunes as well, but I still haven't made up my mind. I know it's nothing I would have picked up like that, ever, but now that I have it (it was also a cheap purchase) I'm quite happy with it. Pomery is quite a good player. So, how about your experiences? Maybe also with musicians mostly unknown to you? Hits? Misses?

Because I just did the same on my site (mea culpa), I started thinking about the following, which we can see here all the time: Whereas some people have quite decided opinions about copyright infringement in regard to recordings, these same people have no qualms copying entire news articles from various sites around the Internet and then pasting them, often in their entirety, into the various (mostly politics) threads here. When I then go and check out the direct link provided by the person who started the thread or posted the item, every time it clearly states that the material may not be publised elsewhere, etc. Hypocrisy? Any thoughts on this? Cheers!

I like the scene where Snoopy is mocking Lucy during her rant. Cracks me up everytime, especially when he jumps up on her head and mimics a vulture for no reason. What can I say? Yeah, that is THE classic Snoopy scene. Cracks me up every time!

These past weeks news items have been popping up right and left saying that Toshiba's HD DVD will be the successor to the current DVD disc. As far as I can tell, the movie industry (at least four bigger representatives, Warner Bros. Studios, Paramount Pictures, Universal Pictures and New Line Cinema) has agreed to push this new disc as soon as possible (last quarter of 2005). Because we have so many knowledgable people on this board, is there anyone who has kept up-to-date with this development? How imminent is this change to a new format really? Is Sony's Blu-ray disc really out of the race? And how compatible, if at all, are these new formats? Without doing too much reading, I guess it's safe to say that both new formats offer better copy-protection (at least it wouldn't surprise me). So, any input from the technology-savy people on this board??

I have lots of Christmas CDs, most of them jazz or "jazzy" ones. There's only one which is way up there, heads above the rest (... without counting I would say I have about 40 X-mas CDs and many of the ones mentioned above): Bugge Wesseltoft. It's Snowing on My Piano. Act 1997 Tracks: 1.It's Snowing On My Piano 2.In Dulce Jubilo 3.Mitt Hjerte Alltid Vanker 4.Deilig Er Jorden 5.O Little Town Of Bethlehem 6.Du Groenne,Glitrende Tre 7.Det Kimer Naa Til Julefest 8.What Child Is This? (Greensleeves) 9.Kimer,I Klokker 10.Es Ist Ein Ros Entsprungen 11.Stille Nacht 12.Into Eternal Silence It's the most lyrical, soothing and wonderful CD I have in my collection., So much so that I even play it in the middle of the summer. I've given it away as a present at least 70 or 80 times since 1997 and have yet to meet a single person who wasn't taken by this recording. Absolutely wonderful, and highly recommended. It's a solo piano recording. Skip the title track and start with track 2 ... and enjoy. Marvelous sparse improvisation that I find stunning every time I hear this CD (which is really very often). Give this one a try. In my collection it is simply also one of the very best CDs I have. It's one of the very, very few I never get tired of. Not even remotely. Cheers! P.S.: This is not at all representative of what Wesseltoft usually plays ... electronic jazz which can and sometimes does border on dub music.

I hope nobody barfs on the Mosaic box in your house. That would just totally ruin Christmas.

Thanks Maren! That last cake was just yummie! Cheers!

I can't turn 100 (the board software doesn't allow it), so this thread is finally kaputt. Thanks to everyone who joined in. It was a fun and sometimes bumpy ride. I might want to do it again one day. Cheers! P.S.: My real birthday was/is on August 27th. I was born in 1962. You do the math.

LOL You guys just have TOO much time ...

Is that Staten?

Karl Denson's latest album, which I have, made me think that his band is one that is probably best seen live. Although his band has that 70s Afro beat thing going quite well, I thought it's not really CD music but live music, too boot. I guess I was right?

These out-of-the box systems do not rattle much. They do, but not really the way they're intended to. They give you moderate output to enjoy surround sound at, well, moderate levels and a reasonable price. If you want to shake the neighbourhood, you need to invest into a decent surround amp which can output at least 100 "real" watts per channel and a good speaker system like this (just as an example, a German) one (which is a THX 2 certified system): It's guaranteed to piss off the neighbours (unless you live at the edge of a forest somewhere) ... and it turns your living into a storage room.

Thanks, Maren! We really only have one cat in the neighbourhood and I decided NOT to invite it to the party. It just gets into it too much for my taste ... Cheers!

Post count or age?

Thanks Maren! You must be in the kitchen constantly! Much appreciated ... by me and my cats. Cheers!

Thanks for the cakes! I had to give some to my cats ... Cheers!

BLUES, BOOGIE+BOP (1940s Mercury sessions, 7 CDs) ... got it cheap on eBay (under $40) in excellent condition. Looking forward to it after some posters all over this board here recommended the set. Cheers! Bought myself a second still shrink-wrapped Duke Ellington Reprise Box (German version of Mosaic) yesterday for 20 something (investment). I'll sit on it for two years or so. Have been lucky in other areas as well. Somehow, people don't feel like bidding at the moment (I paid a laughable 24 Euro for another copy for of the Hampton/Peterson Verve sessions box ... my dad'll get that one for X-mas. This was my fourth attempt at getting another set ... they usually went for around $70 - 100. All things come to those who wait). Cheers!

70's ROCK bands that changed in the early 80's...
neveronfriday replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous Music
OK, my fingers are itching. I have to side with Dan Gould here, at least somewhat. My CD [formerly LP] collection is a rather eclectic one (as, I would guess, is that of many people posting on this board) and it does contain a very healthy set of 80s and 90s music. Many names that were posted here are in that collection. Lots of them, plus a lot more. What I don't have any of is that stuff where you had to blow-dry your hair and wear eye-liner to be allowed to listen to it ... I guess you know what I mean (there was also a funny dance that came along with that kind of stuff which cracks me up whenever it turns up in some films of the time). And the shoes ... *yuck*! Joe Jackson (brilliant stuff), The Police, etc. etc. etc. ... plus some stuff I'm embarrased to mention here. I was into it (as I was into some good 70s stuff before that) and I bought lots of it. BUT. My collection reached a point at which that music just didn't mean anything to me anymore. It didn't say anything at all. Mind you, I still put it on once in a while in a fit of frenzy (this is where we could merge this one with the Rum thread), but it happens so rarely that I've often thought of slashing my collection by about 2000 CDs of that and other times (but, we collectors don't really do that, do we?). I've even bought some stuff remastered to replace some old CDs that do stand out from the bunch, but that has also died down ... mostly. It was the general disappointment with Pop as a whole (or Rock, or Wave, or whatever they called it when they were looking for new names for the same old pop game) and the increasing mindlessness that basically forced me to return to Jazz after having been away for quite a while (in terms of CDs and collecting, not in terms of seeing it live). It's a bit schizophrenic, I guess. I keep more than 2000 CDs in case I start liking the stuff again on a more permanent basis, but I'm quite sure I won't. Does this make sense at all? I guess I'll dig out Joe Jackson's "Sunday Papers" and check if it still speaks to me. I think right now it might. Cheers! -
Ever since I got this baby (very cheap, I might add), it's been on constantly, only interrupted by the Granz Jam Sessions box. What fascinates me about the Hampton/Peterson dates is the unbelievable swing these guys could cook up when they felt like it (or when the mood grabbed them). There are several numbers on this box that just take off like rockets and keep going and going. The music just gets me in a good mood every time and with winter and all, that's not a bad thing at all. I'm also noticing that whenever I want to just kick back and have fun, I always graviate towards the 50s/60s jam and swing sessions. Hampton, Peterson, Basie, Eldridge, Newman, some Ellington, etc.. etc. etc. Cheers!

Thanks a million, Michael! I've been to your site countless times, not only to check the sessionographies but also having a very close look at how you did things. I've also checked out Brian, but I'm thinking of duplicating (and enhancing it) in Access or the like. I'm used to a little more comfort which I'd like to put in there (just the basic handling of the prog .... the database is very good). I'll get back to you later when the first questions pop up. Cheers!

Duh, been there a million times. I didn't check the link before I said I would check it out. But thanks anyways. Cheers!
