These out-of-the box systems do not rattle much. They do, but not really the way they're intended to. They give you moderate output to enjoy surround sound at, well, moderate levels and a reasonable price. If you want to shake the neighbourhood, you need to invest into a decent surround amp which can output at least 100 "real" watts per channel and a good speaker system like this (just as an example, a German) one (which is a THX 2 certified system): It's guaranteed to piss off the neighbours (unless you live at the edge of a forest somewhere) ... and it turns your living into a storage room.

Thanks, Maren! We really only have one cat in the neighbourhood and I decided NOT to invite it to the party. It just gets into it too much for my taste ... Cheers!

Post count or age?

Thanks Maren! You must be in the kitchen constantly! Much appreciated ... by me and my cats. Cheers!

Thanks for the cakes! I had to give some to my cats ... Cheers!

BLUES, BOOGIE+BOP (1940s Mercury sessions, 7 CDs) ... got it cheap on eBay (under $40) in excellent condition. Looking forward to it after some posters all over this board here recommended the set. Cheers! Bought myself a second still shrink-wrapped Duke Ellington Reprise Box (German version of Mosaic) yesterday for 20 something (investment). I'll sit on it for two years or so. Have been lucky in other areas as well. Somehow, people don't feel like bidding at the moment (I paid a laughable 24 Euro for another copy for of the Hampton/Peterson Verve sessions box ... my dad'll get that one for X-mas. This was my fourth attempt at getting another set ... they usually went for around $70 - 100. All things come to those who wait). Cheers!

70's ROCK bands that changed in the early 80's...
neveronfriday replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous Music
OK, my fingers are itching. I have to side with Dan Gould here, at least somewhat. My CD [formerly LP] collection is a rather eclectic one (as, I would guess, is that of many people posting on this board) and it does contain a very healthy set of 80s and 90s music. Many names that were posted here are in that collection. Lots of them, plus a lot more. What I don't have any of is that stuff where you had to blow-dry your hair and wear eye-liner to be allowed to listen to it ... I guess you know what I mean (there was also a funny dance that came along with that kind of stuff which cracks me up whenever it turns up in some films of the time). And the shoes ... *yuck*! Joe Jackson (brilliant stuff), The Police, etc. etc. etc. ... plus some stuff I'm embarrased to mention here. I was into it (as I was into some good 70s stuff before that) and I bought lots of it. BUT. My collection reached a point at which that music just didn't mean anything to me anymore. It didn't say anything at all. Mind you, I still put it on once in a while in a fit of frenzy (this is where we could merge this one with the Rum thread), but it happens so rarely that I've often thought of slashing my collection by about 2000 CDs of that and other times (but, we collectors don't really do that, do we?). I've even bought some stuff remastered to replace some old CDs that do stand out from the bunch, but that has also died down ... mostly. It was the general disappointment with Pop as a whole (or Rock, or Wave, or whatever they called it when they were looking for new names for the same old pop game) and the increasing mindlessness that basically forced me to return to Jazz after having been away for quite a while (in terms of CDs and collecting, not in terms of seeing it live). It's a bit schizophrenic, I guess. I keep more than 2000 CDs in case I start liking the stuff again on a more permanent basis, but I'm quite sure I won't. Does this make sense at all? I guess I'll dig out Joe Jackson's "Sunday Papers" and check if it still speaks to me. I think right now it might. Cheers! -
Ever since I got this baby (very cheap, I might add), it's been on constantly, only interrupted by the Granz Jam Sessions box. What fascinates me about the Hampton/Peterson dates is the unbelievable swing these guys could cook up when they felt like it (or when the mood grabbed them). There are several numbers on this box that just take off like rockets and keep going and going. The music just gets me in a good mood every time and with winter and all, that's not a bad thing at all. I'm also noticing that whenever I want to just kick back and have fun, I always graviate towards the 50s/60s jam and swing sessions. Hampton, Peterson, Basie, Eldridge, Newman, some Ellington, etc.. etc. etc. Cheers!

Thanks a million, Michael! I've been to your site countless times, not only to check the sessionographies but also having a very close look at how you did things. I've also checked out Brian, but I'm thinking of duplicating (and enhancing it) in Access or the like. I'm used to a little more comfort which I'd like to put in there (just the basic handling of the prog .... the database is very good). I'll get back to you later when the first questions pop up. Cheers!

Duh, been there a million times. I didn't check the link before I said I would check it out. But thanks anyways. Cheers!

Oops. John beat me to it.

Besides the fact that Basie has been on hold for a while (life, the universe, etc.), no, we're not using Brian (yet). It's all Excel. But we were talking about making all the info available in different formats after having compiled it (also in Brian). Ask John. He's head honcho in the discography/sessionography department. We have most of the sessions down ... now we just need to put them online. Thanks for the link. I'll check it out. Cheers!

I'm going to be 95 tomorrow. Boy, this is exciting. -
Hi everyone, I was wondering if there's a comprehensive online resource anyone can recommend regarding the formatting of discographies/sessionographies, abbreviations used, lettering and numbering, etc. I haven't been able to find a decent site yet. Of course it's relatively easy to study several good online discographies/sessionographies, but for a larger project I'd like to have a site I can run to in case of questions. Thanks for your help. P.S.: If you know of any printed material you can recommend, please do do!

(Old) MAC (?) How To Disable the Caps Lock Key 1. Make a copy of the System file (in your System Folder). 2. Open the copy with ResEdit. 3. Open the KCHR resource. 4. Select one of the keyboard layouts (I used the U.S. System 6 layout). 5. Choose Duplicate from the Edit menu. 6. Highlight the duplicate and press Command-I. 7. Name the new layout something like No Caps Lock. 8. Open that layout by double-clicking. 9. Press the Caps Lock key. You'll notice that the picture of the Caps Lock key onscreen darkens. 10. Drag the lower case letters in the upper window to the appropriate spots on the picture of the keyboard (drag "a" to the "A" key). 11. Close and save the window. Quit ResEdit. 12. Name the altered system somthing like Altered System. 13. Drag your real System out of the System Folder and replace it with Altered System (DON'T THROW AWAY YOUR OLD SYSTEM! You might need it again). 14. Once Altered System is in the System Folder, rename it System. 15. Restart your Mac. 16. To get rid of Caps Lock, open the Keyboard control panel and select the No Caps Lock layout. 17. Pushing Caps Lock will now seemingly have no effect.

You just HAD to ruin it for everyone, didn't you. -
Yeah, and the "slipcase" is so damn tight that you need pliers to get the damn box out. I actually like the booklet though and the overall look.
-
Well my friend, while the outside looks kind of nice - a little repro vintage amp - when you pull off the lid, all you see are the CDs literally wedged into slots in regular old gray spongy foam. They're just hanging there in space, no protection, and they easily roll right out onto the floor. By far, hands down the WORST boxed set packaging ever, and certainly the chintzy-est. Hm. I'll try to get a cheap one and repackage it.

And how are we going to explain all of that to the others?
