  1. Far more serious is Rollins' rip-off of "In a Chapel in the Moonlight" from Kitty Kallen and "You" from Art Linkletter (both on "Sonny Rollins and the Contemporary Leaders"). The man simply had no decency. Indeed! Look at how he stole Al Jolson & "Toot Toot Tootsie" - final proof (as if any more is needed), that everything we think we know about the origins & meaning of "jazz" is wrong, and that the history of the music needs to be rewritten to reflect THE TRUTH!!! I think Sonny was ripping off Lucy and Ethel when he did I'm an Old Cowhand. That's where most people i know who know the song know the song from.
  2. In an ideal world, everybody would love everybody. (I think)
  3. I know Mosaic is in some sort of financial crisis right now but have they given us any reason to believe that what they pick to release is not based on it being what they believe is really good jazz and not by how well it will sell or (since it is a limited edition) how fast it will sell? Well! You could argue that the Braxton set was designed NOT to sell since it included material that is of no more than curiosity value which bumped up the price. I'd be interested in hearing that argument, or what exactly the material is on the Braxton set that is of "no more than curiosity value". I'll admit there's material I like more than some of the other stuff, but I don't see where any of it is invalid or mere novelty.
  4. Held up by some penguin's estate, most likely. Jazz impressions of the USA is a really good record. I'm really curious whay that hasn't been given a formal US release. If it's Brubeck;s doing, I wonder what it is he could possibly dislkie about it?
  5. Wow... this is wonderful news. How old is Sam Rivers now? 86 or 87? We saw him in Philadelphia maybe 10 years ago and he was teriffic. It's interesting that Mosaic is releasing more "avant garde" (or whatever the proper term is) sets lately, as opposed to the emphasis on swing era material. Maybe the Braxton set sold well or something?
  6. So you have to wonder what exactly they mean by LP masters, if that's different from session reels if any of those survive. The fact that there are 23 unreleased takes seem to indicate that some do, and the sound from those may be superior to LP masters.
  7. Yeah, i have to get both of these, and the Threadgill when that shows up. No air conditioning this summer!
  8. I remember one review/article on Ellington's band, the whole point of which was that they were rude people, and Duke didn't seem to care. He could write, though sometimes I wondered what he was trying to say, really.
  9. Good News. These are great great albums, especially Solid Ground. I was always hoping for a Mosaic Select of his 4 LPs and anything else laying around in the tape vaults, if there is anything....
  10. they must have some kind of special licensing agreement for this to have lasted so long, maybe?
  11. Anthony Braxton Disc 5 (Creative orchestra Music 1976 and part of the Montreux / Berlin Concerts). Love it.
