  1. Listened to 2 of the 5 discs today. Are you serious?
  2. Scott Hamilton and Buddy Tate, Back to Back.
  3. Just took the plunge again. Bought a Thorens TD 850 off Audiogon at a very nice price. Goodbye Rega P3 (off to the youngest son who appreciates good music). Just set up the Thorens-definitely an upgrade. Do love vinyl, even if it's slated for the death list in 2009. Damn Exxon.
  4. Wolff-You have to look up the feedback on the winner of the Miles set. He picked up about 68 positive feedbacks on March 28 from seller "Funk You" for an alleged 68 different purchases from that seller on that day. Something smells fishy here.
  5. Personally, I prefer the Pepper of the 1950s, but that's because I loved that Cali sound. That said, I have a lot of his work in the 60s and 70s and always felt he did not get his "just desserts." Incidentally, as usual, the Mosaic Select sound and song selection blow away much of his other recorded discography to my ears even though he did a lot of work on Contemporary, a well-recorded line. I feel the same way about Dexter-I have much of his work but the Mosaic Select just sounds a 1,000 percent better.
  6. All it takes is one determined buyer to alter the price landscape in an auction. I know you have that new table and are hungering for some new quality vinyl, but do what we all do-wait for prices to revert to the mean. I've been a buyer of lps lately, but try hard to pick my spots and not to pay up too much (right, sure, LOL). I too have just bought a new (well, 6 months old) table so I'm on the same slippery slope of insanity, straining ever so hard to lift up the sonic quality of my world.
  7. Who's Lester Young? By the way, while you're getting Lester, do not overlook his five sublime sessions in DC in 1956 with the recently deceased Bill Potts. I come back to them frequently even though I have all the"commercial stuff" too. Maybe I'm just a homer, but Lester sounds so lyrical and relaxed on these sessions. Incidentaly, tranemonk, pick up the Verve set if you can-there is some soulful wailing by the master on them.
  8. I've actually thinned my collection a little bit. Had the Brooks Lp set but since I had the cds, I decided to dispense with it. Brad: Funny how we have gone in different directions. I bought the Tina lps recently although I had all of his albums on cd. What I have come to realize in recent years is that Mosaic vinyl sounds much better to my not-so-sophisticated ears than cds, and thus I have enjoyed listening to the Tina lps. In fact, I recently just upgraded my turntable (bought but not yet had time to put in operation) so I could continue to pick up and enjoy lps. Of course, I am paying for this folly (not buying the Mosaic lps when they are were available from Mosaic) but then it seems worth it to me.
  9. Smart move, sidew. Amos could bring it and the vinyl really enhances his delivery. I like Chas. Brown a lot, but Amos for me takes it to another level. One of my Mosaic favorites and, if I can resist the NCAA games tonight, will put on a couple Milburn lps.
  10. Skid-Exactly! I've loaded the iPod with a lot of jazz, but also with a lot of blues and classical that had been in the basement. With the iPod, I can listen to a much wider set of music, from the Mozart's Requiem to Howlin Wolf to Lee Morgan depending on my mood.
  11. Thanks, Uncle Skid. The minor deception ("say, kids, your iPod is really a 37 not 40 gig model") wouldn't matter much unless, like me, you quickly and surprisingly discover that 40 gigs won't feed the bulldog. Here I am "rationing" my iPod and it's barely been around the block. There is only one sensible answer: trade up to the 60 gig model....LOL.
  12. Brad-I'm up to 28 gigs and my iPod says it's max is 37 gigs (where did those other 3 go?) so I have to be careful. Ripped only 3 of the 18 discs of the Verve set. But, I'm listening to disc 7 of the Riverside (German set) on my computer and lovin' it. I take it Universal blessed you with a delivery?
  13. So, I have a home office in an unused bedroom. There, I have a nice audio setup-Meridian cd player, small Dynaudio speakers, Classe integrated amp, Rega turntable, etc. Also, my Dell computer is there with a couple of small Harmon Kardon speakers and a subwoofer. Got my 40 gig iPod a month or so ago, and began ripping my favorite jazz cds to my hard drive and then loading them into my iPod. After awhile, I came to realize that playing my music through my computer speakers was virtually as good as on my system. In some ways, actually better. In fact, I kind of like it even better than the audio setup. Anyone else experience this?
  14. You can include me among those who got the $99 special-came today. The good news is it came and that the cds appear clean and without foreign substances. The bad news is that the outer box is so rusty that my fingers are discolored just from trying to open it. The wonderment of it all-have to think the genius packager of this baby is otherwise employed.
  15. Big W-I have ripped a number of cds in recent weeks. Two things: (1) I used AAC 128kbp and the sound is excellent, especially with Etymotic ER-4P headphones-big advantage is that I can squeeze a ton of music on my 40 gig-more sensitive ears may need slower, better regarded methods, and(2) when several of my cds would not rip properly and yet played through nicely on my cd players, I simply made a copy of the offending cd and then ripped the copy-worked flawlessly every time. All of this is well worth the effort-shoveling the white stuff just got a lot better.
  16. Brad-Just bought the vinyl on eBay last month and think it is some of Hall's best work. Like mgraham, I enjoy the Concierto and agree that it is more accessible here than on Sketches. The CTI recording is excellent, by the way.-Chuck
  17. I snagged one several days ago. It was the first time I had bought from Universal on ebay and I was struck during the transaction by a specific "caution" from Universal that, by hitting "Buy It Now" feature, I was entering into a firm commitment to buy the set. I quite agreed at the time, and mentally noted that Universal had bound itself as well when I accepted its offer. I can assure you that I will press the matter with them if they pretend unilateral mistake since I am an attorney and will not allow them to weasel away on the assertion that "a computer error" caused them to mistakenly make the offer.

    Tony Coe

He is a player all right. Listen to Days of Wine and Roses with Alan Barnes, a superb performance.
  19. Nothing but good fortune with this seller. I have thought in the past that all sellers in that marketplace ought to be half as good as these folks.

    iPod

After watchful waiting for over a year (i.e., hoping for massive new product upgrades), I did the deed and bought a 40gb last Saturday. Went to Best Buy and Circuit City (both were out of stock) and then got smart and went to an Apple store. Got home, loaded hours of stuff and plugged my iPod into my XP USB 2.0-nothing. After some tech calls, determined my iPod was a DOA. Got a replacement on Sunday and, with more tech help, finally downloaded my music. Lot of effort, but used the thing on a long plane ride yesterday and it was money...big money. Agree with Couw-regular bit speed leads to very acceptable sound quality. Will upgrade the headphones since too much music is lost by the loose fit of the standard Apple ones-probably Etymotic ER-4p. Couple of questions: 1. What do I need to get to hook my iPod to my Bose radio in the office? 2. When should I start getting concerned about the amount of space on my computer hard drive taken up by the music I have loaded? 3 Does anyone have a nice carrying case for the iPod and the brick when traveling? Thanks for the help. Needless to say, with all the hiccups I had, I highly recommend this product.
  21. Fran-Are you serious? That would be outstanding.
  22. Cheese whiz or not, love this set. The Mosaic sound is about a thousand percent better than the Mercurys....that's a conservative quantification. Disclaimer: Dinah could sing the theme from Sesame Street and I would groove on it. If you like Dinah, I daresay you will never hear her better than here-kudos to Mr. Addey again.
