  1. How does Grant fit in on this session. Looking from the lineup...Herbie, Wayne, ect. Grant seems the odd man out.
  2. Sorry. I WILL be picking this up on Late's recommendation. I love Criss and this sounds wonderful. I do hope others get a chance to post soon.
  3. Speaking of ordering....where's the best, CHEAPEST and FASTEST online site for the new RVGs? I would like to see $8.98 with free shipping.
  4. Even my restaurant gig on tuesdays which pays a decent guarantee is getting very tough. Business is so bad the owner is in a foul mood all the time now. I can't see him guaranteeing band money much longer. These bar/club owners can take a financial hit on occassion, but after a period of consisent bad business, that $90 a man guarantee won't hold. I hope things turn around for all of us....musicians, restaurant and club owners soon. I'm going to have to make the call today and cancel my Thursdays.
  5. Is it just me. Or does it seem like Joe Henderson juped onto the scene fully formed?!
  6. Ahhhh. I hate when you guys sit on the fence about these things. Glad to hear all the good things. It'll be first on my list. Also, I hate to mention it....but what about "Inner Urge," still never picked that one up either, but just ordered it from half.com I've got all his other BNs except those two. By the way, the Blue Note site has all the Sept. 2nd RVGs listed on the home page now. They are... Bud Powell "The Scene Changes" Lee Morgan "Search For The New Land" Joe Henderson "Mode for Joe." ...and I forget the other 2...damn
  7. I wondered if anyone can speak for "Mode For Joe." The AMG has a very skimpy review. I'd like to hear some board members opinions. I've never heard it.
  8. Just came back from my weekly thurs. evening happy hour. Looks like the end of at least that weeklyl gig (maybe both of mine soon). Like I said earlier, this gig is exclusively bar % plus tips. Usually this is a big musician no-no...but this place is always a good place and the money's always right. It used to come out to $100 a man usually. Then, about a month ago, it went down to about 50 bucks for the drummer and 35 or so for me and the guitarist.....well, tonight was the all time low. I actually had to take money out of the ATM so I could pay the drummer and guitarist. I LOST almost 50 dollars out of my own pocket on the gig. We made 26 dollars from the bar and 10 bucks or so in the tip jar. Horrible. I'm not even sure what to say about all this except, if I see George Bush, I'm going to ask him for my goddamn economy back. Horrible. I've actually paid to play now. It took 10 years but it's finally happened.
  9. There was an article in Jazziz I believe about live recordings at the VV, last month I think. It mentioned the horrible sound quality on the two you mentioned recorded by someone at BN in an inferior way. Worst quality live VV rec. ever they said,... or something to that effect
  10. Just buy it a pretend they didn't record the first set.
  11. Dudes, you guys are funkin' up JP Corner with the zornisms. I'm here on behalf of John Patton to tell you to take it outside.
  12. That IS one of the BEST pictures ever taken!!!! Love it.
  13. If you have Bobby Hutcherson's "The Kicker"....put it on and listen to their version of "Step Lightly." That is a STANDOUT track with some terriffic Grant Green on it. Not crazy about the CD as a whole, but that track is a killer. Just a suggestion for your August listening pleasure.
  14. I don't know conn., if two people were in the same record shop both looking at jazz organ cds...the world is probably coming to an end. ...by the way. It's a SHAME the uninitiated might think that "I Want To Hold Your Hand" is a lame 60's-era Beatles cover schlock job. Even in the Grant Green biography they mistakenly say so (guess they didn't listen to it!!! ). This is simpley one of the most beautiful, gorgeous recordings made by any of the men involved. And Mobley kills too. Corcovado! Speak Low! Jeez....the whole thing's a damn PERFECT record!!!!
  15. I haven't picked this up yet. Sort of overloaded on Moran hype. I'm backlashing! O.K. he covers a rap song and reaches back to james p. johnson....makes for a good read in magazines, but what about a good cd?
  16. NO!!!!!! Grant Green's "I Want To Hold Your Hand" is absolute wonder. A lone Beatles cover done BEAUTIFULLY!!! Other than that, the titles are all straight ahead. One of the best organ albums ever made. GET THIS CD NOW!!!! Or forget about enjoying life.
  17. OH MY GOD!!! THAT IS THE BEST RECORD IN THE WORLD!!!!!! sorry for shouting, but it's true.
  18. There's so many soul-related questions here. ....matter of fact I was just listening to the Impule-ive Curtis Fuller(boss of the) a couple of days ago...great album of course! I pulled by board name from a George Braith Blue Note LP..."Soul Stream." All I know is Curtis Fuller ALWAYS gets bitch-slapped behind J.J. Johnson. Curtis was a lyrical mother fucker and he NEEDS to be recognized by all humanity!!!! ....Tina and CO2 are still around to my knowledge but hardly playing (that's my knowledge which could be wrong) Randy Zimmerman...I don't know that dude. Sorry Jsngry.
  19. Sorry Dr. J.!!!! Bad timing I guess. However, don't feel too bad. Minor Swing is the least favorite of the two. But it is still a good one. You might have to make a "business" trip soon!!!!
  20. On a similar note. I heard someone talking about a GREAT R&B oldies-type show they attended recently. The kind that used to have a pretty large backup band with a horn section, ect...lot's of work for the guys. Turns out, everybody performed to pre-recored music. The worst part, the crowd made up of mostly younger people didn't even notice or care that "real" musicians weren't used. These promoters are making money off the ignorance of the younger generation. The folks are paying the ticket price to afford a live band, but since they don't know shit, are getting ripped off by a pre-recorded bullshit affair. Ignorance is bliss.
  21. I really don't know anything about him. But he's got a HECK of a discography on AMG. Sorry to hear the news.
  22. Yes, those are two very worthy sessions that show what Patton was all about in his last years. Great bands and some terriffic compositions, especially on "This One's For JA." "Minor Swing" is basically mined from his old Blue Notes as far as songs go...."The Way I Feel" "Along Came John" "Minor Swing", ect....but still a great CD!!! By all means pick these up!!!
  23. That's kind of always been my battle cry as well Jim. Do everything but give up, that's how you stay in the music game...by sheer stubborness that you WILL NOT QUIT...no matter what reality tells you!
  24. I don't know, sometimes one trombonist is one too many. I remember Brannen Temple. He still playing his ass off? Yes! Brannen is still killin'. I get the pleasure of playing with him 2 or 3 times a month and it's always a blast. Hey, don't badmouth trombonists...I named my son after Curtis Fuller!!!
  25. Looks like you might have to learn some Korn or Limp Bizkit songs Soul Stream, just remember to abolish any kind of musical talent you have and you'll be getting gigs with the kids left and right. The most profitible year I ever had in music was my FIRST year doing it full time!!!! Isn't that crazy? Unlike most other jobs, sometimes the more you learn...the worse off you are financially. As soon as the "J" word gets into your vocabulary forget it! Damn you Blue Note for turning me onto jazz and ruining my chance to make money!
