  1. On a sour note. A friend of mine who plays bass, said he used to be in a pretty bad blues band in Cali.,....one upside of the gig was Sonny Criss used to come in regularly and sit in. ...disturbing that this was the fate of such a great player as Criss. Also, I was at a Q & A with Jimmy Heath last year when someone in the audience asked Jimmy about Criss. Heath couldn't have been more disdainful of the Criss's playing, HIGHLY overrated was the nicest of his comments about Criss's work.
  2. Maybe it's the name that's turning me off.
  3. Berigan, My father had a wrongful death at the hands of a hospital/doctor/nurse. We sued and won although the cap for such legal action in Texas is $1,000,000. They settled for around $800,000 which is basically unheard of without going to court. But with 5 brothers and sisters, mother, and the lawyer....in the end it didn't come out to a huge sum. And it was a draining, draining experience. So my point is this. Don't worry about a starting any kind of lawsuit at this point. It is not important now. No money is important now. Only your mom's health is important. Do not dwell on what's been done wrong right now. Get your mom well first. Lawsuits against doctors and hospitals are VERY, VERY, VERY hard to win. The laws are geared to protect doctors and hospitals for the most part. At least that was our experience. And when you try to sue doctors and hospitals the gloves are off. All the best to you your mom.
  4. I don't mean to sidetrack this thread, but how is that book, GofM? I've seen it at stores a couple of times but never really felt compelled to pick it up, for one reason or another. Hard Bop is my FAVORITE jazz book. It you love Blue Note, David R. really gives it to you. I LOVE this book and have for years. Plus he's a damn READABLE writer. Great straight forward style. And he gives plenty of room to Andrew Hill, Tina Brooks, Jackie,.... It's great!
  5. I had a chance to go see The Bad Plus last weekend and ended up not going. They've seemed to really get the hype lately. However, I usually find myself a little underwhelmed at hyped events. I haven't noticed any talk on the board about them (maybe I'm wrong about that). Anybody got any opinions? I have to say, when I hear jazz musicians talk about how genius certain Rock groups are, I start to glaze over. Not that I don't consider many of those same artists genius, it just seems a bit of a sellout to wave the flag about how great The Police were when you're playing the Village Vanguard. It takes more than a reworking of a rock song to make me a fan. How are these guys?
  6. Yes, I can't wait to hear michael sing "lover man."
  7. Yeah, Lee's entrance on his solo on CFD pretty much makes my chops bleed by just listening to it. And I believe it's "wusses", AKA "wussies", sir. Yes, I questioned my spelling of "wusses" the moment I logged off.
  8. Hey, great pick. I've never even HEARD of this record. I love the little Coles I've heard (Yes, I think he played his ass off on The Waiting Game, so ). Anyway, thanks for turning me on to something new.
  9. You mean Sonny Criss playing "Up, Up and Away" isn't the shit?
  10. Yes, I remember David R. raving about Lee on "Carabbean Fire Dance." Saying he pretty much made all the other players, pretty "bad" cats themselves, sound like wuses. Can't wait to get it.
  11. You should never stray too far from Dustygroove!!!! Damn, I envy you being in Chicago. Now THAT seems like a hip music town!
  12. I guess the more "jazz" you play, the more of a "disconnect" there is. Mothership Connection is great, but you're basically a funk band at that point. By the way, what's the name of the group. If bar owners are "begging" for you to come back (especially in this economy), then it sounds like a band we should be on the lookout for.
  13. Yes, but I'm talking about "real" Alfred-approved Blue Notes with Reid Miles man!!!! Accept no imitations.
  14. Enjoy the feeling TempleJazz! Anticipation! The best part of life is anticipation!!!! (That and hearing Blue Notes for the first <and thousandth> time).!
  15. I was thumbing through the new little Blue Note Album Cover Artbook (the small one that combines vol 1 and 2). It made me a little sad. I remember when I first got those cover are books....I used to just drool and IMAGINE what those albums sounded like. So many were unavailable on CD, and finding them on vinyl was almost impossible in this part of the country. Now, I have most all of the Blue Notes in one form or another. It makes me a little sad that the sense of discovery is over. The idea of hearing a Blue Note for the first time after looking at the cover in those books for so many years. I can still remember how blown away I was after recieving my first TOCJs of my Holy Grails....John Patton's "The Way I Feel," "Oh, Baby!", and Freddie Roach's "Brown Sugar." Those were the days. I really miss them. But on the bright side, "Mode For Joe" comes out today and I've never heard that!
  16. Berigan, Don't know if you're still checking in at this point but I saw a show on MSNBC tonight. It seems to be a weekly show perhaps, called "Titans, with Maria Bartiramo (the host.) This week it was the "Titans of Cancer" and included a panel of the top cancer researchers, hospital adm., ect. The panel included the President of M.D. Anderson Cancer Hospital in Houston , TX among others. Also, it listed the top 5 Cancer hospitals in the country. M.D. Anderson was ranked number one. It might be worthwhile to see if this show is playing again, or pehaps obtaining a video copy of it from MSNBC. It covered the whole spectrum of what someone facing cancer should be aware of, treatments, clinical trials, dos and don'ts, ect Advice from what seemed to be the top people in the field. Just thought I'd let you know. Hope you and your family are doing o.k....
  17. Peter I agree about the sound of MANY Prestige organ dates being wonderful... The ones that come to mind immediately are all of the Patterson LPs, also the Patterson/Stitt stuff. Don Patterson's "Mellow Soul" on Prestige is about one of the best sounding organ dates EVER!!!!! So, there's certainly no hard and fast rule. I'm think more of stuff like "The Grass is Greener" by Grassella Oliphant, ect... BTW, Muzart sounds pretty nice. More along the lines of his BNs than "Laughing Soul" sound-wise.
  18. Thanks for the insight Wolff. I guess I'm more curious than anything. I certainly have my own tastes and needs when it comes to music buying and listening. I'm also curious as to where, for the most part, people find "mint" original Blue Notes. "Mint" must be and almost unachievable qualification. Are these coming out of well maintained collections or has someone found an old record distributor's warehouse.
  19. But you can say that about anything. The most you can do is make yourself (and perhaps others) happy while you're here. If collecting records makes a guy happy, I'm not going to rain on his parade. It's not really for me, but then again I'm not a rich guy and spending what money I have on travel, sports and the occassional fancy restaurant is what makes me happiest. But I think the difference is just this. A COLLECTOR is only happy when they KNOW they have everything, or that one thing they MUST have (usually as soon as they get that item, they MUST have something else ) The happiness is in the knowing....the collecting. Not really in the items. I'm making a ditinction between people who have a lot of things that may or may not be collectable (records, cars, ect), that bring them immediate joy and satisfaction in the USE of that item. Driving a 57 Chevy and enjoying it is much different from say...owning ten 57 Chevys and only really enjoying the fact that you HAVE ten 57 Chevys. I know people that have lots of a particular item, whom I don't consider collectors. For me it's jazz Cds, but I wouldn't say I'm a collector... I just like the music and the music is on Cds. Still I think it's a shame the jazz artists LPs we're paying so much for are basically struggling. Were's the balance?
  20. You know people who have spent 100K on a home turntable??!!!! Man, who do you know. Well, I guess after reading that, I can see you must be a very high-dollar collector. My post isn't to meant offend. But I guess I'll tell you what I really think about these things, and hope we can agree to disagree. Imho, the thought of collecting is a futile endeavor. You're born, you collect, you die, someone sells your collection. That collection could be anything from expensive sports cars to beanie babies. The end result is the same. If you dig music, it's the music that matters...not what pressing, not the cool graphics on a cover. $100,000 on a turntable to play a 2,000 jackie mclean album when you can get basically the same results from a 15 dollar cd and a decent system at Best Buy. Hey man, for that money you can HIRE Jackie McLean to come play at your house. I'll put it this way, John Patton was scaping for money to pay the rent at the same time I saw his LPs selling for 75 bucks on ebay. Something's wrong with that. Our society and many others have lost sight of what's important here. Next time someone wants to buy a $500 Johnny Griffin album...buy the CD and send Johnny the change with a note about how much you dig his music. o.k., I know that was a little rough, but that's how I feel about it.
  21. I just noticed a mint copy of Johnny Griffin's "Congregation" LP going for over $500 on ebay and the auction wasn't over. It made me wonder. Why in the hell are people spending this kind of bread on something they probably will never listen to. Certainly, I'm not above it in a sense. I spend (o.k.,waste) money on sonic upgrades, ect. Money I could put to better use in the world, charities, ect. I guess this is just my guilt speaking a little bit. However, as much as I do or don't spend, it is on stuff I listen to. But come on....hundreds of dollars on "mint" copies of stuff that's basically going on a shelf.... ....at what point does collecting become vulgar?
  22. ....hey, George Braith is doing great! On Monday, he's going to Barcelona, Spain to gig with an organ trio there for a week. It'll be his first trip to Europe since 1973 he said! Alvin Queen's booking agent might be hooking George up with some European dates and so forth soon....hopefully will start getting some of that well deserved attention soon. If not here, at least abroad. Other than that his new CD "Boptronics" may be getting picked up for Japanese distribution. He'll know after the 15th of September. I'll keep everyone posted.
  23. I had a conversation with George Braith last night that I thought ya'll would find as interesting as I did. Yesterday, I recieved an LP copy of George's Prestige date "Laughing Soul." I called George to tell him how much I dug his Cowboy look on the front cover! Anyway, we started talking about the album. And immediately George said, "Oh yeah, I don't like the sound on that." If you have the album, you know the sound is VERY different from George's BNs. Braith said he told Rudy he wanted a sound similar to his Blue Note dates and Rudy ABSOLUTELY refused. He was adamat that the sound was the BN sound and he could not replicate it. At this point I asked George if he was talking about Rudy or Cal Lampely, the producer of the date. No, it was Rudy he repeated. In the end George was very unhappy with the sounds that Rudy got on that album. I thought it was wild how much input Rudy seemed to have on the final sound vs the producer. We all know RVG tried to create different sounds for different labels. But this first hand insight seemed to shed light on just how this occured. In my opinion, many of those mid-sixties Prestige dates (Braiths, Freddie Roach's come to my) are almost cut off at the knees by the horrible sound. I always thought it was the result of a producer's bad taste, now I'm not so sure. Thought this would be of interest.
  24. To me, Higgins always seemed to move things along very nicely but in very subtle, UNUSUAL ways for the most part. He had one of the wierdest, implied BACKBEATS of all time. Straight time was never straight with Billy. He was the anti-Art Blakey in a way.
  25. Just ordered them all from CD Universe. Have never ordered from them before. I wonder when I will get them if they come out tuesday? Anyway, last time I goofed around and ended up paying 12.99 about every 4 or 5 days for another new RVG... no savings that way. The local tower quit selling them for 9.99 or 8.99 like they used to so, so they won't be getting my business anymore.
