What albums *really* exceeded your expectations???
Soul Stream replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Recommendations
it's been hinted at with various single BN titles, but Horace Parlan's Mosaic Box is absolutely wonderful. A huge surprise to me as to how much I would really, really grow to love it. -

a few that come to mind right off the bat... dizzy reece "soundin' off" lou donaldson's "the natural soul" hank mobley "soul station" every early blue note that Larry Young's on donald byrd "byrd in hand" was a pleasant surprise recently and about 100 more I can't think of right now -

...just a thought. of course, it's your pick so pick whatever you'd like. however keep in mind anything other than a single CD is going to get less participation. 2 or 3 cd sets (lighthouse, is) are just too much music for most to thoughtfully digest well enough to give any substantial comment on in a week. plus, the ball was dropped last week, so whoever goes next should have one a lot of people have so we can all get back in the game. just and idea... -
I gig with Martin Banks who plays trumpet on Woods' "Awakening" LP. I'll ask Martin if he knows what happened to Jimmy Woods.

You've actually got me into it too, RT. I've been planning on getting this since I saw it was being released from Fantasy. It certainly was on my "to do" list. The store last night didn't have it. Seems like the new releases from Fantasy have about a week to 10 day lag time around here. Can't wait to hear it.

i'm not trying to say the Bartz is not a winner. just not my taste. i find sometimes that these things can creep up on you later. I may love 'music is my sactuary' at another time. so lon, no dis intended. you've got a great set of ears that i, for one, won't argue with. i'd like to hear other's opinions about the candido. i've not listened in depth yet, but found myself wondering what "could" have been almost immediately as far as other 'better' rare groove releases.
-
o.k....I've given a quick once-through of the Candido and Bartz. The Candido is DUDSVILLE. The Bartz, to my tastes is horrible, a disco travesty. I know others have liked this one, so I'm not saying it's bad for everybody. I'm not at all into 70's fusiony stuff...and this is full-on 70's-o-rama. I didn't even go for the Byrd, because I knew that wouldn't happen for me. So, I guess it all depends on your tastes. However, I can't see how anybody could get into the Candido unless it's a d.j. looking for beats.

...just picked up all of the new Rare Grooves sans the Byrd. Listening to the Patton now...have had it on lp for a long time, but the new Rare Grooves CD really, REALLY sounds good. Unlike a lot of the McMasters, this one has the BASS intact! Really strong sound on this one. haven't listened to the others yet...

If you want to see/hear for yourself how great Teddy Edwards was...buy/rent his Jazz Scene USA DVD. His ballad (self-penned I believe) "Afraid Of Love" is about as stirring, emotional and just plain brilliant a jazz ballad performance as you'll ever see. The statement of the theme itself is gut-wrenching. I loved Teddy Edwards. Another great one gone. Check out some of his Prestige stuff if you can, (afraid of love is on one of those)....

After seeing the Blue Note site with the new Rare Grooves, I have to admit a little disappointment. I'm a big Rare Grooves supporter but,....the Byrd and Bartz are very, very, very late Blue Note's with the Mizell touch. Not really what I consider prime Blue Note stuff for the Rare Groove Series. I guess they think this stuff has a better chance of selling to the kids. Too bad. Of course the Patton is right on the money (no surprise from me!) Anyway, so much good stuff in the vaults. I'm glad Rare Grooves are back...but the last two batches aren't the greatest. Remember the original batches? They were GREAT!

what happened to the album of the week?

That's the wrong "good times roll"...it's not the one you refer to that Ray did. Earl's was "Come On Baby, Let The Good Times Roll," sometimes call "Come On" also. Stevie and Jimi Hendriz had the most famous versions of Earl's song. I still remember playing it with Earl himself as he walked through the club and out into the parking lot, playing his guitar all the while! He was wild, and a real sweet guy too. I've had about 10 calls this morning telling me about Earl's death (and I didn't get home until 4 from the gig!) Anyway, sad to hear....but I'm glad I got a chance to play with him.
-
I love how he couldn't guess Patton. Thought he was a new organist, modern recording. Just goes to show how timeless Patton's approach was. Never dated. To fool Lonnie is a feat. Long live John Patton.
-
I had the pleasure of playing in Earl's band when he came to Austin several years ago. Great showman, guitarist and of course legendary songwriter. Going to eat breakfast with him after the show was one experience I'll never forget. A real legend. Really sad to hear this news.

I really admire Carson Smith's basswork on the various Chico Hamilton, Chet Baker, ect.. pacific Jazz stuff. What became of him? Did he die or continue to work...seems like the trail of recordings ended fairly early for him.

lookin'...chet baker "the newport years"

ahh...the "Jazz Junction" CD sounds like it is it! On the video, he plays the intro riff and begins to sing...it's only about 20 seconds...thanks!!! -
that's great. what a nice, nice guy he is. real genuine, like you said. other than that...how was the show!? i've seen him with Lou, but never on his own. what tunes did he play?
-
Yes, Lonnie Smith is about as good as it gets on the organ these days imho. he has it all, and above all his message to all the rest of us is...relax. that man is the most relaxed musician, much less organist, i've ever seen. dynamics, taste, technique...ect...unbelievable. did you get a chance to hang or talk? i've seen him a few times and is always very nice. how come we now have 4 or 5 soulive cds and no recent dr. lonnie smith solo efforts. guess lonnie doesn't play stevie ray vaughan covers enough.

the only thing this will be collecting around my house is dust. after a once=through...i'm about jam band'ed out. if repetitious funk is all these sort of bands have to offer, even after their fourth release, count me out. the bass is so annoyingly loud....i don't know, it's alright for what it is....but i just saw charlie haden with lovano and company...now that was a great musical experience. and quiet as a snowfall. soulive is music for frat boys screaming "hell yeah..." you have to be 20, drunk and looking for chicks to dig this sort of bump and grind nothingness. sure, they are good/great musicians...but the music they make is really just rock star nightclub googledy-goop. or, maybe it's just that my gig paid $50 and I played to people falling asleep in their food.

No, not the new replacement CD, if that's what you mean. I meant I had ordered my CD online and had not recieved it yet in the mail. It came today and is the defective first pressing. My rant was in sending back another Blue Note CD this year (along with my defective Along Came John insert, Dialouge defective CD among other notables.)
-
Hey, got my new f'd-'up SOULIVE CD in the mail today!!!! Can't wait to send ANOTHER Cd back to Blue Note for replacement! This is really beginning to be fun! Blue Note rules! By the way....the subterrainian super-low keyboard bass is annoying on this. I can't imagine how deaf the soulive generation will be in later years.

whatever happened to Hardbop's NYC reviews?
Soul Stream replied to Soul Stream's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
but under what heading??? i looked in the "live" catagory and didn't see anything that resembled the topic-type-wording he used to use (ie "it's cold in nyc, but the jazz is hot! blah, blah) -
One thing I really miss about the BNBB was Hardbops play by plays of his nightclub rounds. Is he doing these somewhere else now?
