John Patton Mosaic Select: What's in, What's Out?
Soul Stream replied to Matthew's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
man, i'd LOVE to hear that 1986 session with George Freeman! Unissued...what a drag. By the way, i'm not faviliar with the "new world" label... -
i actually like some of those type things quite a bit. the more i hear about the bartz, the more i'm beginning to get excited about it....
-
Is that THE Fred Jackson on Gene harris' "Nexus?" Didn't know he was still alive in 75 (from what I understand, nobody knows what became of him)
-
I've already forgotten what's coming and when. since Blue Note fails to announce anything about any of it on their site. a reminder?....thanks...

Does anybody have the "Let's Get Lost" video who can listen to the "Walkin'" track on it? The end credits just list it as 'owned by Capitol' or something to that effect when the "walkin" credit comes up. I'm getting more perplexed as it's clear the Newport version is Not the one on the video. Other than that, i see no other version of "walkin" that Baker ever did.... -
Geeze, the credits must be a mile long!!

saw her on 'the tonight show' last night. the song was worse than the others she had to sing before. some sort of garbage with a droning hard rock guitar riff....she really sounded out of her element (and bad). oh well, it didn't take long for her 15 minutes. ...just think it took that many people to make a bad record. well, i guess the old saying about too many cooks is true. -

question...does Chet sing "Walkin'" on this version from Newport.... The "let's get Lost" version has vocals.... -
bet the next norah jones cd doesn't have any problems.... of course, at this rate you never know.

True to form, Blue Note isn't recalling the defective CDs. As usual, it's a "if you're lucky enough to log onto our site and find out, you can mail it back at your expense for a new one." what crap Blue Note should just recall this shit. Instead as their MO, they just screw the customer. "Hopefully, most of these idiots won't notice they've bought defective product..." is their attitude. Maybe they should just keep the "mail the defective product" notice up on the site. They must get tired re-posting it so often.

I don't care what anybody says....Blue Note has sold out. Their site is all about showing d.j.s, norah, ect. The fact that they fucked up another cd is a JOKE. How many mistakes can they make? Is anybody at corporate about to kick Tom's ass yet for fucking up every other release? Quality control at Blue Note doesn't exist. Tom may have great intentions, but his company sure is has some expensive mistakes..... A blue note Bobby Hutcherson reissue mistake is one thing...a thousand copies. But a SOULIVE new release fuckup has got to get expensive. I guess I'll hold off buying any new release or new reissue blue note's from now on. wait until the mistakes are caught and then buy. I already bought the Soulive online and sure i'll be getting by defective disc soon. thanks blue note for more fucking postage and bullshit i have to put up with in order to buy something from your company. now shut up and reissue 'the phantom.'
-
thanks for the heads up, but $82 ! I'd like to hear it, but not THAT bad.... Anyway, guess I'll keep a look out for some vinyl or hope it will make it to the domestic reissue program soon. Thanks again for the help!

was watching the baker documentary "let's get lost" and it had a great version of "walkin." just about 30 seconds or so, but it made me "have to have it!" man, it really sounded great. it's on a live 50's cd called "the Newport Years" vol 1, chet baker quartet....anybody ever heard of it or got it???

thanks mike. curious more than anything else about this session. your description of the sound quality dulls my enthusiasm for it. 80's-itis has killed many a jazz session for me in the past and probably would have on this one. bad sounding piano is the wooden stake to the heart on this one I guess. thanks for the help. -
this oop soulnote session is one i've just stumbled across in print and would love to hear. does anybody have a line on where to find it.... or/also...can someone give me their thoughts on this cd if you've heard it? thanks in advance for any help.

Anybody know where I can get the TOCJ of "The Phantom?" I LOVE the title cut and have been waiting for Blue Note to release this forever...thanks again japan!!! ...by the way...since reading this thread, I've been looking.... I used to have some sort of Blue Note compilation (maybe an import) that had "The Phantom" on it...now I can't find it and don't remember the comp. name. Can anybody help me with that comp. title????

Just picked this up from DG. Been looking for it for years. A compilation of Eddie's BS before sets basically in 1976. Some funny, mother fucking (eddie's words ) shit! If you EVER see this! Get it! For $6.99 it can't be beat....(it actually comes up at dustygroove fairly often) Anybody else have this...?
-
i think this might have been mentioned already. but seeing as the amount of blue note material available (or unavailable as you see it), Jutta Hipp's BN stuff might make a nice Mosaic Select.
-
i'm looking forward to the henry grimes trio esp vinyl i ordered from dustygroove. i'll let you know what i think when i get it...

reason number one million of why the world is upside-down. The Final Comedown is out on CD, but "Goin' West" isn't.
-
this disc sucks (can i be more blunt?!). anyway, i'm a huge grant fan of pretty much any period...early, middle, late...but there's little redeeming about this one. to begin with, grant's hardly on it, arrangements and ensembles weigh this thing down so much.... i say this all from memory, i could pull it out and listen, but i don't want to waste my time on it. avoid picking it up. unless it's the last gap in your grant green collection, everything else he ever did is better.
-
I was just thinking what a ripoff Jimmy Smith's "Back at the Chicken Shack" is of Red Garland's "All Day Long." Red should'a sued on this profitable ripoff....
-
Yeah, I like his BN's much better than the more hardbop oriented "texas twister." but....

I've gotten used to the fact that the Wilkerson isn't some people's cup of tea. For me, his Blue Notes remain very high on my list of all-time favs. So, to each his own. His brand of tenor straddles the line too much for some between r&b and soul-jazz. Great combination in my book. These 3 wilkerson albums were a departure from BN's usual stuff, but I would not call it uninspired playing at all. Quite the contrary imho. Grant green is burning on these. As for stuff to stay away from in my opinion...anything past 1972.

thanks bertrand, i bought it today and just checked...all 3 of the right cds. looking forward to listening....
