  1. Marchel is my hero. A Giant.
  2. I think those are the feelings of many, so don't feel like you're raining on the parade. A lot of his post Pacific Jazz vocal work I don't admire. Some of the late, late stuff I do. The early sixties stuff especially on (is it Prestige?, I can't think, some NYC stuff) is bad, uninspired, really flat, ect. I do love the Pacific stuff!
  3. To me, the very early stuff on Pacific Jazz is his best. Especially the "Sings." Not just for the singing, but his trumpet playing on those sides is extremely lyrical and beautiful. He might just take a chorus, but they are spare and wonderful to me. Even a brief intro of his on these sides is extremely memorable. I think I could hum every note on these ones. Pick up "The Best of Chet Baker Sings" on Pacific Jazz.
  4. I've had the collection of Chet Baker singing on Pacific Jazz for many years now. I've always loved it. Both musically and for the singing. I know a lot of people hate his playing and his singing. However, this may be one of my top 10 lps/cds. I just always get a very honest feel from it. And I think it's artistry rises way above just some sort of easy listening. Is anybody with/against....?
  5. I don't know about the CD. But from the few CD's I've heard with Dan Trudell...he's a phenomenal organist. He's on that Mike Allamena(?) CD, also tenor player Doug Lawrence CD (listen to his solo on Mr. Clean... whewee. some bad stuff). Anyway, I'd like to hear that CD if only to hear was Dan Trudell plays.
  6. It's like Viet Nam over there. jungle warfare. The imperialists won't win, they have the might and power but not the heart. God bless Alexander and all the rest trying their best to get off one last bullet before being gunned down.!
  7. Well, it's official. Hadn't peeked into the BNBB all day until just now (about 10 at night my time.) I know it's been said...but it's downright creepy over there. A week ago it was thriving, tonight I had to step over a few of the dead and dying. I wish I were a fly on the wall in Tom's office. Was it a gameplan gone horribley wrong, or one that succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. There was no middle ground taken. The place IS vacated, bomb-out and destroyed beyond recognition. It makes me sad, and I wonder if it makes Tom and the few in the BN offices sad too? I don't know. I'm sure Bo would be bummed that all his hard work has been wasted. Sometimes, it's good to talk about death.(I think that's a Dr. Phil... )
  8. Amazing story Chuck. Wish i could have seen THAT show!!!!! What a line-up. Someone with enough insight to try and reunite Jimmy Smith with Art Blakey should get a Nobel Peace Prize. (don't happen to have a tape of it do you... put that out on your label, I'd buy that on 8-track!)
  9. Parkertown, just give it a little while. Try to imagine being there at that place and time. Jimmy Smith virtually came out of nowhere and was playing like THAT! His genius viruosity, Monk-ish funk, Coltrane-ish phrasing...in the late 50's that was like seeing a spaceship when people were still flying prop planes. Give it time to sink in. If you do, I think it'll grow on you.
  10. I didn't read the whole thread from AAJ. But it seemed like that was only one guy's opinion. Frankly, he's probably voicing what others are thinking. I'm sure this whole thing has been a shock to their system. If the tables were turned, I'm sure the some on the old BNBB would have not been so happy to see a huge onslaught of people invading their cyberspace. But they've gone from 0 to 50 in no time. Any board that didn't have seperate forums must really have low traffic. Once you get this many people talking at once, you've GOT to have seperate forums. That said....I like it here. I've noticed some increase traffic today which is heartwarming. I'm staying here and trying to make a go of it. I think this place will pick up speed as the days pass. Simply because it does function as a free and open forum, functioning with open arms to all. Something like that can't go wrong....
  11. Yeah, that idea that they didn't use pedals. What a crock. I've seen a lot of the major organists still around. Mel Rhyne didn't touch the pedals hardly. Lonnie used them more than any other I've seen. Jimmy, some put mostly accents. McGriff more than Jimmy. And McDuff seemed to be in the middle somewhere. j John Patton showed me how to play pedals. He had a great touch on them and had a nice feel for accenting without being to heavy. Some guys get a little TOO Pedally for me. In the end, pedals are very important. How much they are used seems an individual taste. Mel Rhyne didn't play them the night I saw him and he sounded great bass-wise. I've seen Joey use them a lot and on one night hardly touch them. But to say Patterson couldn't play the pedals is nuts. The legendary guys could all play the hell out of them. Any full-time jazz organist can play pedals.
  12. I would read "Myself" first. I dug it. "Beneath" is a little more....is what it is. Does that make any sense?
  13. I was looking for this today to give it another listen. Now I remember selling it. Well, guess I didn't dig it that much. I was going through a "purge if you don't listen to it" campaign a while back. The Baccuss fell victim to it.
  14. wesbad, I'm glad you've decided to get involved. I know, like myself, you see this board as the best place for us all to come. Truely, only time will tell. Things WILL work out. A few more post deletions....and, well...you know how everyone feels about that sort of thing. I still see the potential this place has being filled by the rest of the BNBB population. It just may take a little time and a few more gaffs over at AAJ. Build it and they will come. I think that's true. If B3-er's board is built better than AAJ, then he will prevail. I think it is. Also, most are probably waiting until the forums are listed on the AAJ over the weekend. But ultimately, I sense a bit of a strict vibe over there. We'll see. Let's just have patience.
  15. In all honesty, I'll have to give this another spin. Haven't ever really listened too much to it. By the way, I heard Eddie's son is in Pieces of A Dream.
  16. I read that knock on AMG as well. What a load. He played the hell out of the pedals. Even if you don't have the ears for it, in John Simon's CD (Patterson's last recording) he mentions how Don was the only organist he ever played with the played the foot and hand simultaneously. Like Lonnie Smith if you've ever seen him play. That AMG guy is an idiot. Goin Down Home is bad. One of my favs.....
  17. Jazzmoose, I'm curious as to what thread was deleted over at AAJ. Although catesta is really trying to make it work over there, something gives me a funny feeling sometimes. I can't put my finger on it.
  18. This is an O.K album. The review overstates the case IMHO. If you want to hip yourself to an obscure organist. Check out Sam Lazar. His 3 lps for ARGO are wonderful. He's a guy NOBODY seems to remember. Do yourself a favor, take the money you were going to buy the Baccus CD for at www.dustygroove.com and instead buy "Playback" by Sam Lazar. It's much, much better IHHO. Others may disagree.
  19. To me, this is the best board out there. In this sense, it's ours so to speak. What's the difference between cyber-boards other than this one says organissimo at the top and the other AllAboutJazz? I feel no different here than at the pre-nuked BNBB. But what we do need is participation. We can only have so much interplay among a dozen or so people. If that's all the comes of it, fine. I'll still be here talking to those few. I wish there was a way to get everybody over here. I just don't know how to convince folks.
  20. I think once the new forums are posted at AAJ, it might be the end of the hopes of making this board the final destination. I hate to see it since I think B3-er did and is doing a great job over here. I, for one, will continue to make this my first destination when in cyberland. Hopefully, more and more people will drop in, like it, and stay. Honestly, aside from getting new members surfing the web, I think this is a better spot. I like the setup better and the management can't be beat! It's everything we missed about the BNBB. I'm afraid we might run into the same troubles at AAJ at sometime. It too, is run by some sort of for-profit corporation. Lightning can strike twice. Thanks B3-er for all the trouble you've gone to. Hopefully they'll all land here eventually. If not, it's a great place to hang! (Especially when you want to talk organ stuff.)
  21. Agreed. Have you heard Bill Heid's new CD. Ed Swinnich sent me one, and I liked his Patterson-style cut a lot. He's really got that down. Now if I could just steal his brain.
  22. I used to not dig the Muse dates as much. However, as of the last 6 months or so I've really grown to like them a lot. Especially some the of stuff that wasn't really reissued on the "Steady Comin' At Ya" CD compilation,(even though I liked that a lot as well). What am I saying....I don't know! I like it all I guess. I'm partial to the early stuff just because it's what I stumbled onto first I guess. Plus, the recording techniques were better on the earlier stuff. I used to hate the slow speed sound, but dig it now too. What's your favorite DP album B3-er?
  23. O.K., Time to give Don some god damn props! Maybe the best organist ever in many ways. Although there's really no "best" in music, Don certainly has intrigued me since Day 1. My first exposure to his playing was through a copy of "The Exciting New Organ Of" LP I stumbled across in a used bin. Up until that point, the only organists I had heard were alot of Jimmy Smith, McDuff and McGriff. Well, Don blew my mind the moment I put the needle to the vinyl. And it's still blown. Along with Patton, Don is surely my favorite of the organists.
  24. I heard that Lucky was one of the first American jazz musicians in Europe. He supposedly really whipped a lot of the better players into shape.
  25. Damn, I had the chance to see him when I lived in Boston for a short while. Blew it, and now I'm jealous anytime I see a mention of his live show! Well, have fun....Wish I could be there!
