  1. Now you got me thinkin' I was on the pipe those nights at Yoshis. No ... it was a quartet. Holland was definitely there. Nah, you can't miss a fearsome bearded dude playin' a big acoustic bass so intensely it's gonna snap. Anybody remember those shows? Sco was on fire so bad extinguishers were in hand ...
  2. Wow. Thanks guys. That's a lot of material. What are your faves?
  3. Doofuses as in "Allen Lowe", not as in the handicapped. You watch Love Boat reruns every night. You voted for Gopher for Senator. You love the guy. Admit it. Plus you're the only hated jazz musician that no one ever heard of.
  4. It's an organ trio, dude! I've heard from a pretty plugged-in dude that the Sco,Holland,DeJohnnette,Goldings band will be back. I think they've got one in the can comin' out soon ... and another tour is in the works. Don't rule it out.
  5. I'm trying to come up with a list of Bobby Timmons' best compositions ... but don't have the discography to do it. Here's my start: Dat Dere Moanin' So Tired This Here Any help out there ?
  6. Pure guess on my part, but I bet this is an MMW release this time around. Also does this mean MMW is no longer on BN? Whoooaah! Another MMW collab is exciting news. But I don't see any mention on John's site. But once this Ray Charles tribute is finishes up, check out John's Spring/Summer 06 touring schedule : KILLIN' ! I wonder why no bass in the Goldings DeJohnnette group (Holland would make it the same monster combination as Tony Williams tribute band). Holland's website shows an itinerary through end of Jan 06 only, but I've heard the Williams tribute band will resurface, so possibly, just possibly, it hasn't yet been officially announced yet that Holland will be on those dates. Anyone know? 7. I have a problem with doofuses.
  8. More Sco To Go: http://www.youtube.com/w/Scofield/Smith/Pu...n%20scofield%22 http://www.youtube.com/w/John-Scofield---J...n%20scofield%22
  9. Here's a little Stanton Moore funk drumming instructional thing I found: http://www.youtube.com/w/Stanton-Moore--Sp...nton%20moore%22 Too short unfortunately. The tune is Stanton's "Sprung Monkey". The only recording I know of is on Garage A Trois' "Emphasizer" CD.
  10. akanalog, do you accept begging?
  11. Well at least I know a bit about jazz musicians that are actually alive, as opposed to dead, which is all you guys seem to know anything about.
  12. Man, I can't even motivate myself to listen to Copperopolis a third time. What is going on with Hunter? Like I said before, maybe he needs to head out to a bridge Rollins style.
  13. I saw Chick a little while back. He sure put on some weight .... like Faddis and Turre. These are well proportioned gentelmen. Great rapport with the audience. Does anyone know if he's still doing music with Avishai Cohen ? (Avi opened for him and then played bass on a few numbers). You know what still blows my mind even today is Maynard's version of La Fiesta. Well, you gotta be into the screaming brass ... but if you are, that's the one to listen to.
  14. Freddie live (TV audience ?) in top form in 85 with the VSOP band. No chop problems here ! http://www.youtube.com/w/Cantelope-Island?...ie%20hubbard%22 Imagine dissing Hub for Wynton. I wonder if that was Herbie behind it. Apparently Freddie was strung out, but who can tell from his playing on this night. Oh, maybe it's not the VSOP band because Joe's on tenor. Anyone know about this clip?

I'm not sayin' Kurt was a genius like a jazz great was. That would be stupid because those two camps are comin' at the world from totally different angles. Jazz is life-affirming, life-prolonging, life-enhancing, life-appreciating. But rock like Nirvana is speaking of the reality under the surface of courageous positive thinking. Positive thinking is the only way if you're going to make it long term, but positive thinking as presented by the media is also one of the biggest lies in our society. Negative thinking is also an serious lie manipulated for profit by untold legions. Kurt told the truth in a way that sliced right through it all and probably de-confused hundreds of thousands who otherwise would have never got out of their own world of negativity. He almost singlehandedly destroyed two popular music genres (hair metal and pre-HIV party music). To date, 50 million legit recordings have been sold. Probably more musicians from every diverse genre, style, age, location, whatever, recognize Nirvana as having laid down some of the most real music in history. Mass emphathetic communication directly to the scariest part of the human soul is definitely one kind of musical genius.

If you bought Bleach, Incesticide, Nevermind, In Utero, From The Muddy Banks Of The Wishkah, and MTV Unplugged and that's your opinion, I'm guess I'm amazed. Except for the covers, almost every track is either great, brilliant, or genius.

If Kurt wasn't a musical genius then who is ? And it didn't have anything to do with "teenage angst" (whatever that is ... maybe Geffen invented it and marketed it as an ubiquitous and perfectly-acceptable youthful affliction with a musical cure). Kurt hated being an icon for teenage angst -- said it made him rich, old, and bored. Cobain felt life far more intensely than most, and took the most tortured painful remorseful self-loathing self-hating aspects of the human condition, specifically in respect to confronting the relative ugliness of the soulless parasitical usury aspects of the hierarchical relationships prevalent in the adult world (and the worthless boredom of it all) and dealt with it in unadulterated form via unique musical expression (perhaps the only other alternative for a severe bipolar such as Kurt would have been insanity). You could argue that early Nirvana is for teenagers and early twenty-somethings .... .... but getting into Incesticide, Nevermind, MTV Unplugged, and In Utero, this is music for adults that deals with the very serious problem you got when all the happy people all around you don't make you happy, and, worse, evil twisted tortured shit gets into your mind and you ain't got no way to get it out. And that's reality for a lot of people on this planet, especially this country. In his final years, Kurt was collaborating with Burroughs on various lyrics and bits and pieces or stories and art. Unfortunately for KC (who did find joy inside of him despite his deteriorating condition), the neurons kept on firing all wrong and self-expression via music started making it worse not better and so the only solution for genius was junk and then suicide. http://www.youtube.com/w/Nirvana---Rape-Me...h=%22nirvana%22 http://www.youtube.com/w/Nirvana---Aneurys...h=%22nirvana%22 http://www.youtube.com/w/Nirvana---Lithium...h=%22nirvana%22 http://www.youtube.com/w/Nirvana-Heart-Sha...h=%22nirvana%22 http://www.youtube.com/w/Nirvana--Come-As-...h=%22nirvana%22 http://www.youtube.com/w/Nirvana---Radio-F...it%20shifter%22 "What is wrong with me?" Jimi Hendrix wasn't a guitarist per se? Per se who? Yeah, I wanna hear the answer to this one. Because Jimi's guitar was continually incorporated into the story-telling aspect of his songs ... the guitar playing served as emphasizers, segues, rhythm and background, etc. underlying the story primarily told by his lyrics. It's tough being the front man and the guitarist. How many great rock bands can you name in which the guitar genius was the front man ? Kurt Cobain, a "guitar genius"? I said "wasn't a guitar genius per se" ... but effectively Kurt was a genius on the instrument. Why? Because his human expression was genius and it wouldn't have happenned without him composing/playing both the vocals and the guitar. He had complex, deep, disturbing emotions and psychological disruptions and disturbances (that are shared by many) that he had to communicate, where vocals alone would not have sufficed. He succeeded in getting enough out of the guitar to achieve that communication. And actually I'd almost get into an argument that some of his guitar work, like on Aero Zeppelin, was genius on a pure guitar basis alone. Don't gotta have Stevie Vai's chops to be a genius on the instrument, as Slash is ample proof.
  21. Well I'm off to get my PhD in ethnomusicology focusing on black music in America in the 20th century. When I return in 8-10 years my first priority will be to try to read this thread.
  22. Translation: "Music made by a young middle-class* white guy from California doesn't meet my authenticity threshhold, therefore I'm incapable of appreciating it on its own terms." *Actually, Hunter didn't grow up "middle-class" at all, according to his online bio. Hunter wasn't middle class. When I knew him the dude was starving to death. Also, he isn't white. He's some percentage latin, like 50% or something.

Man, thanks for that clip!! Caught it when it aired the first time, and it was the highlight of the show. Something's wrong with it. Keeps on stopping and starting. Anyone got a link to a video of the 2nd SNL performance ? Or, if you prefer, Freddie in top form in '85 doin' Cantelope Island with Joe, Herbie, Ron, and Tony. http://www.youtube.com/w/Cantelope-Island?...ie%20hubbard%22
