gerald wilson is an amazing talent and person! just wish i had his energy at my much younger age! he "out-hung" me every night at the monterey jazz festival recently!!

quite poignant that his widow just passed away about a week ago.

i didn't see it but i know he did a tune with christina.

The Aggregation big band will be conducting a series of 5 rehearsals, open and free to the public. No surprise here. I've always thought that people who complained that Dylan "can't sing" were missing the boat entirely. His incredibly precise timing and controlled manipulation of vowels is easily the equal of Sinatra's, although, obviously, entirely different. Same for his harmonica playing - no accidents there. None. ← OY!!!

You're right, Valerie, the thread has sidetracked a bit, although I think both premises are being addressed, and I think the "alternate interpretation" (i.e., those who played w/Bird and are still around) has proved to be quite interesting as well. don't know if it's been mentioned here, but buddy has an autobiography that i believe came out a few years ago.

i'd give anything to attend the service for this incredibly special man but it's just not possible for me given that it will take place 3,000 miles away. i will also be there in spirit and hope many of my nyc friends are able to make it. john stubblefield will always be remembered and praised for the unique, beautiful, talented man he was. and i'm constantly listening to his most recent musical effort, "I Am Three"!

i'm so glad that aside from his vast amount of professional accomplishments, it is being written and acknowledged about what a sweet, kind, lovely gentleman he was.

no disrespect to tony and his talent but i think one of the reasons he's being acknowledged in the jazz world these days (he's appearing for the first time at the monterey jazz festival this weekend!) is that there are so few really good male jazz singers left , sad to say!
