High-end hi-fi is like anti-wrinkle cream

It strikes me as funny yet true that I don"t consider those huge Wilson speakers ugly. Would love to have a pair, though they are not even close to fitting my budget. While it is likely true that few if any wives would find them attractive, but for a "very modest" audiophile they look beautiful. -

Listening to Sonny speak in such glowing terms about Lester Young really warmed my heart. I could sense the great love and admiration he had for Pres.

Did this actually surprise you?

Yes, this is a session I can easily recommend.

Stanley made so many terrific albums on Blue Note that this one may get overlooked. Turrentine and Les McCann fit together like bacon and eggs.

I also have them both. Not essential, but very much enjoyable.

I do not recall her being part of the scene. But it was along time ago.

I was fortunate to grow up in Detroit during the time when so many great musicians lived there. Before they left for New York I heard Barry Harris, Tommy Flanagan, Kenny Burrell, Pepper Adams, Curtis Fuller, Yusef Lateef, Hugh Lawson,Sonny Red, Kirk Lightesy, Terry Pollard, Paul Chambers, Doug Watkins, Elvin Jones, Charles McPherson, Lonnie Hillyer, and others playing locally. That early experience was responsible for the fact that players like Barry, Tommy, Pepper, and Charles McPherson have long been among my handful of favorites on their respective instruments.

"Scoops" from this CD. Really love this Sonny Rollins tune.Nice key changes and Lalama sounds great, and Richard Wyands provides ideal comping and a fine solo.

Rob Schneiderman has 10 CDs out on the Reservoir label. 5 are trio dates, the other 5 have a horn or 2 or 3. All are quite good. Schneiderman is one the better jazz piano players around these days, in my opinion.

"Jaylock" from - Count Basie Kansas City 7 on Pablo. Not to be confused with the Impulse Basie recording also titled - Kansas City 7.

Larry, unfamiliar with the Herb Geller putdown of Art Pepper? Can you provide details?

Reading this thread encourages me to go to the shelf to locate that CD and place it on the pile of things waiting to be played. This is one of the features I like best about Organissimo. Now on to finding the Rogers plays Rodgers album.

I have long been interested in exploring lesser known composers from primarily the Classical and Romantic periods with a few from the Baroque period as well. In looking through my collection this morning I listed quite a few of those composers with symphonies on my shelves. Louise Farrenc - the only female composer on my list Berwald, Rheinberger, Clementi, Taneyev, Krommer, Goldmark, Raff, Fibich, Stenhammar, Lachner, Boyce, Reinecke, Kalivoda, Zemlinsky, Anton Rubinstein, Madetoja, Pichel, Abel, Potter, D'Indy, Kalinnikov, Vranicky, Volkmann, Svendsen, Chadwick, John Knowles Paine

Not shocking choices, though the 3 musicians are not ones I would have selected.
