  1. Though I read the book long long ago, my recollection is that Pepper himself, in his book, had a bit of an inferiority complex about his playing in comparison with the currently more hip East Coast hard bop players. He wanted to be more "up to date" by playing in the style of the most highly regarded players. That struck me as a large influence in changing his style to reflect the more "with it" type of playing at that time. Yes Elvin must have been an influence on his later Vanguard sessions, though strictly at the personal level, it was not an influence I found beneficial. Though clearly YMMD.
  2. I am a big fan of John Marshall's recordings. I have 7 of his recordings as leader on the Organic label ( European), plus the one on Mons , one on Blue Jack (European), and the one on VSOP. Marshall is a sideman on 2 additional CDs on Blue Jack. His recordings are well worth checking out.
  3. I like Shirley even more on piano. Her two piano trio CDs on Candid are very good.
  4. Spohr - String Quartet No.12, Op.45/1 Schumann - Violin Sonata No.2, Op.121
  5. I generally prefer Art Pepper's earlier and mid period playing. Some of his later things I do very much like, but others don't appeal. The influence of Coltrane spoiled some of Pepper's later recording for me. I have the same concern about the later playing of Harold Land and Bill Perkins. Though with Perkins it is not simply Coltrane's influence, but rather the influence of a combination of a number of Hard Bop tenor men.

  12. Sorry to hear this sad news. Will pull out and play one or more of his recordings on Hep, Chiaroscuro, Concord or Sackville.

  18. I recall seeing Paul Brown with the Bill Hardman / Junior Cook Quintet. It was a wonderful group. Hardman was in great form. However the pianist was not Michael Weiss, but rather was Walter Bishop, Jr. If I remember correctly the drummer was Leroy Williams, who also played beautifully. It was a memorable evening of outstanding jazz.
  19. Quartet in e minor (1877) Quartet in D major, Op.63 (1888)
