  1. More sad news. Marian lived a long and meaningful life. Her contributions to jazz, especially through her Piano Jazz program, were important. I particularly remember seeing her leading an all female quintet in Rochester, New York in the 70's. R.I.P.
  2. Terrible news. I was unaware he was in poor health. Saw him live a few times, and thankfully have the vast majority of his recordings as leader or sideman. Cedar was one of my 5 or 6 favorite living jazz pianists. Losing Mulgrew Miller so recently, another of my favorites, makes it seem as if many of the jazz giants are leaving us far too soon.
  3. A few other small group recordings with Billy Root that I enjoy. Bennie Green - Soul Stirrin' - Blue Note Red Rodney - Red Returns - Argo Lee Morgan, Wynton Kelly, etc - Dizzy Atmosphere - Specialty
  4. Other than some of his Blue Note sessions, I am not interested in most of Hancock's recordings.
  5. Not sure if it has been mentioned, but the Curtis Counce session originally on Dootone was reissued on Fresh Sound on the CD titled "Elmo Hope - So Nice". That CD also includes the 3 tracks by the Elmo Hope Quintet that were originally on Pacific Jazz.
  6. I especially like Terell Stafford and Joe Magnarelli as Hard Bop trumpet players. Some others are John Swana, Brian Lynch and Jim Rotondi. Also don't forget Tom Harrell. Roy Hargrove can be very good, though at times the musical direction that he picks does not appeal to me. Neither Roney or Blanchard would be among my favorites.
  7. Check out the CD " The Benny Goodman Story" on Decca/ MCA. There is a version of "Slipped Disc" on that CD performed by the Benny Goodman Octet. Stan Getz solos on that tune.
  8. Not sure it is correct to say I met Miles, but I did encounter him. It was at a club in Detroit and Coltrane was in the quintet. can't recall the date or the rest of the group. Between sets I went up and said hello. He looked at me for a second, grunted something and walked away.
  9. Andy LaVerne would not rank among my favorite living jazz pianists, but I do enjoy some of his CDs on Steeplechase.
  10. I found it disappointing. There are, in my opinion, numerous recordings by Bean I prefer. I disposed of my copy after hearing it a few times.
  11. Happy Birthday Richard Wyands. One of the better jazz jazz pianos players still on the scene.
  12. One of the very best of the Swedish jazz musicians. R.I.P.
  13. Didn't Yusef Lateef play tenor on some 50's R & B records.
  14. I first became aware of Hank Mobley when he appeared as a sideman on the Jazz Messengers at the Cafe Bohemia LPs on Blue Note issued in the mid 50's. I still love those sessions, though now have that music on CDs. From that time on I bought everything that came out by Hank as leader or sideman.
  15. I have seen / heard Houston Person live many many times. He plays ballads beautifully. That big round sound can grabs me in a good way. He is also a terrific blues player. he can get greasy and often is able to bring a large smile to my face. On up tempo tunes, there are many other (living) tenor players I prefer, but when he comes ballads and blues he is (in my opinion, one of the best.
  16. I agree with Larry that the recordings made for the Xanadu label show Sam Most at his best. I am also not a big fan of most jazz flute playing, but Most has long been a favorite of mine. The one Xanadu CD by Most that has been reissued on CD is titled "Mostly Flute". Joining Sam on this very good session are Tal Farlow, Duke Jordan, Sam Jones & Billy Higgins.
  17. I tend to prefer Jarrett's ballads on his many Standards albums. Though he plays the faster tempos well, it is the ballads that reach me more deeply.
  18. Personally my favorite Freddie Redd recording is - Shades Of Redd - which I have in the Mosaic set. I find Freddie's writing is more effective when there are horns in the group. Also, on that session Jackie McLean and Tina Brooks make up an ideal lineup to play Redd's compositions. I like all of Freddie's recordings, though his Sweden sessions and earlier Prestige material strike me as having fewer of the distinctive Redd qualities that I hear a bit later in his playing and writing.
  19. Yes, Nimmons has played an important role in jazz in Canada. Too bad he is not well known by jazz listeners in the USA and other countries.
  20. I have a large number of CDs by Pieranunzi as leader as well as sideman. Here are some i particularly like. Special Encounter - Cam Jazz Ballads - Cam Jazz Live In Paris - Challenge Infant Eyes - Challenge Alone Together - Challenge New Lands - Timeless Charlie Haden - Silence - Soul Note Charlie Haden - First Song - Soul Note Lee Konitz & Enrico Pieranunzi - Solitudes I should also indicate that there have been a few Pieranunzi recordings that I didn't care for and disposed of after listening to them a couple of times.
  21. I use my iPad here far more than my desktop computer. Your signing in issue is not something I face.
  22. As an "older" jazz listener, I had the Flying Fish LP when it was first available. No longer have it, as I disposed of most of my very large LP collection years ago. May decide to get it when available on CD.
  23. Very tragic news. I am pleased that I had the opportunity to see Mulgrew perform live in a few different settings. Once as a solo pianist, another time in a trio , and most recently here in Tucson with his group that included vibes, 2 horns, bass and drums. Jazz has lost a master musician.
  24. One of my favorite living jazz pianists. Hope he recovers and is able to return to the keyboard.
