Hip-O to release 1951-1960 Howlin' Wolf Chess 4CD-box
EKE BBB replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Completely opposite reaction. Never found a way to love the raw voice, it just grates and irritates. (Not that its a case of spending a lot of time trying to, but when I went whole-hog into the blues about six or seven years ago, well - my reaction to hearing the Wolf was similar to my reaction to hearing latter-day Coltrane.) Try again, Dan (the Wolf, not the latter day Trane, which sounds awfully strident and irritating to my ears). -
Love Call here.

Of course they will check this forum, as they will inspect the Facebook accounts of all his "friends" there. Amen to that. Being the father of three young children (9, 7 and 4 years old), the simple thought of the magnitude of this crime just makes me sick. -

James Price Johnson Feb. 1, 1894 - Nov. 17 1955 Beloved Husband, Father and Grandfather Master American Pianist and Composer The Dean of Jazz Pianists As reported on Mule Walk and Jazz Talk (September 17, 2009 and October 7, 2009), the James P. Johnson Foundation, the Johnson family and Smalls Club organized an all day “rent party” to raise money to buy a monument to commemorate this great musician who so far rested in peace in an unmarked grave in Maspeth, Queens, Mt. Olivet Cemetery. The event met with success and this is the proof: http://thereisjazzbeforetrane.blogspot.com/2011/06/james-p-johnson-grave.html

"What a Wonderful World: The Magic of Louis Armstrong's Later Years", Ricky Riccardi's biography of Louis Armstrong's later years (from the end of WWII to his death in 1971) will be published by Pantheon on June 21. Being a strong supporter of Ricky's Louis Armstrong blog, having been aware of his thorough research -from a long distance, of course-, and even having contributed with a few newspaper & magazine articles here and there -just the smallest bit to his wonderful research and analysis work-, I cannot be impartial but... ... I strongly recommend to buy the book! Amazon link
