  4. <<<WOMEN SONG WRITERS Chicago Tribune, November 17, 1907 Woman has invaded another field in which man thought he was supreme. She has become a writer of popular songs and instrumental numbers, and many of the most tuneful and affecting ditties of the day are written by women... [details on some composers] Although the women may have just as much talent as the men, it is not to be expected that their songs and music numbers ever will become as genuinely popular as are those of the men. The men have this advantage: For the purpose of "plugging" (a term used by the profession for popularizing) their new creations, they can go where they please, when they please, and stay out as late as they please without shattering any of the traditions of propriety. The women, however, cannot do this. Imagine a woman song writer standing at a stage door until she can converse with some masculine performer and impress upon him that she has the one song that will "make his act." Imagine her running around until 1 o'clock or later in the morning leaving orchestrations of her latest with the orchestra and piano players of the good, bad, and indifferent cafés. She can't do it, and it isn't expected of her. These are but two of the many things she can't do to "push" her song. Of course her work is placed ultimately where it will do the most good, but it isn't given the close attention the men can pay to their own screeds. Despite these handicaps, however, the writings of women song makers are growing more popular with each succeeding year, and it is only a question of a little while when their work will stand on an equally sound footing with the ditties of the men.>>>> Love to dig into those old newspapers. Plenty of interesting points of view... ;-D

    Ed Anderson

Does anybody know the death date of trumpeter Ed(ward) [Andy] Anderson, who recorded with Clarence Williams (1927-29), Jelly Roll Morton (1927-28), King Oliver (1928), Mills Blue Rhythm Band (1931-34) and Joe Sullivan (c.1940), and was also associated with Benny Carter, Charlie Johnson, Bingie Madison, Charlie Turner's Arcadians, Hazel Scott (1939) and Frankie Newton (1941)? Source of this information is much appreciated. Neither the Gitler/Feather biographial encyclopedia nor The New Grove (2001 edition) mention it. Thanks in advance, Agustín

ISBN 978-0-226-11263-3. $40. > > Library Journal, April 1, 2010 > Cohen (cultural and creative industries, King's College London) adds to the dozens > of books about jazz great Duke Ellington with a new approach. Unlike Mark Tucker's > "Ellington," John Edward Hasse's "Beyond Category," and Ellington's own "Music Is > My Mistress," Cohen delivers a social history that firmly places the bandleader within > his time. The author first describes the racial mores of Washington, DC, at the turn > of the last century that shaped the young Ellington and attributes Ellington's success > during the 1930s to the marketing campaign of manager Irving Mills, who branded him > as a suave, elegant genius who could appeal to black and white audiences. Cohen covers > Ellington's postwar challenges, his return to fame, his State Department tours, the > "sacred concerts," and his death in May 1974. Along the way, he focuses on changes > in the record industry and music technology and the progress in civil rights. > Verdict: Though sometimes writing like a Ph.D. student and quoting from secondary > sources, Cohen offers a fascinating, exhaustively researched social history of Duke > Ellington's world. Highly recommended for general readers and jazz aficionados alike. > > -- Dave Szatmary, Univ. of Washington, Seattle
  18. From my Tete Montoliu research, here's a couple of entries that will be of interest for you (October 1-20, 1963 engagement of the NYCF at the Jazzhus Montmartre & August 22, 1967 concert with Yusef Lateef, also at the Montmartre): -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: October 1-20, 1963 Location: Jazzhus Montmartre, Copenhagen, Denmark Label: [no known recording] Tete Montoliu (ldr), Tete Montoliu (p), Benny Nielsen (b), William Schiöpffe (d) a. [unknown titles] As the Jazzhus Montmartre listings confirm, from October 1 to October 20, Tete Montoliu played on the night shift (Mondays off - October 2, 9 & 16), starting right after the New York Contemporary Five's last set. Sometimes Bent Jaedig would join the Tete Montoliu Trio (Politiken, October 5, 1963). Although MJ, JP and the Quàrtica Jazz #1 interview state that "for twenty consecutive nights, Tete Montoliu played with the New York Contemporary Five", this has been categorically denied by NYCF's John Tchicai and by Herluf Kamp Larsen, owner of the Montmartre. Politiken and other Danish newspapers from those days include several references to the NYCF concerts and to Montoliu playing on the night shift, but without reference to such a collaboration. According to Herluf Kamp Larsen, the NYCF used very strict arrangements for a limited repertoire, with a limited audience, which meant that they didn't go on playing into the night. John Tchicai was not the jamming kind of musician (and had family and friends in Copenhagen), and he would leave after NYCF's last set. On the other hand, Don Cherry, J. C. Moses and Archie Shepp loved to jam and would stay around for the night shift. So most probably Tete Montoliu was referring to these musicians jamming with his trio. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: August 22, 1967 Location: Jazzhus Montmartre, Copenhagen, Denmark Label: [radio broadcast] Yusef Lateef (ldr), Yusef Lateef (f, ts), Don Cherry (t, fh), Tete Montoliu (p), Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (b), Albert 'Tootie' Heath (d) a. Frere Jacques (Traditional) b. Delilah (Victor Young) Additional unknown titles. Frere Jacques listed as "Yusef's French Brother" Further details needed on specific instrument details. Tape exists. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
