Glad to see there´s so much esteem and admiration for Tete Montoliu on this board. Nowadays in this country, the only Spanish jazz that gets media coverage is the Flamenco-Jazz stuff (not that I don´t like it). Sadly, Tete Montoliu is an undervalued musician and an almost obscure figure. You can´t even read a line on him anywhere (try some Googling with his name only for Spanish sites: the results are simply discouraging). As Miquel Jurado, Tete´s biographer and close friend, recently told me, it looks like everybody has even forgotten his name. Thanks for all the encouraging words on the discography! Keep visiting it, as further corrections and additions will be uploaded as they come.

Yes. He didn´t sound just like Coleman Hawkins, did he?

Now THAT should be fun. Agustín: Give the Blue Note folk a good beatin'. GO! GO! GO! You want an all-Oscar-Peterson blindfold test?

FS: Fats Waller (3CD) Middle Years, Part 1
EKE BBB replied to Tjazz's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Great stuff! Great seller! Very reasonable price! You must be one of the most important distributors of Fats Waller in the world, Terence... -
I´ve always been fascinated by the lyrics of the blues songs. I thought it´d be a good idea to start a topic where we can bring our favorites. PS: if anybody thinks this thread would come into conflict with any copyright issues, just tell me, and I will delete it. Just to start: Trixie Blues (Trixie Smith) (transcribed from vocals by Anna Jones accompanied by Fats Waller, recorded 7/1923) Woke up this morning, Blues all around my bed; Woke up this morning, Blues all around my bed; I didn't have my daddy to hold my achin' head. Now, the blues ain't nothin; But a woman wants to see her man. I know the blues ain't nothin', But a woman wants to see her man. 'Cause everytime my man leaves me, Lord knows I feel so bad. You can never tell What's on a brown-skinned man's mind; You can never tell What's a brown-skinned man's mind; He'll be hugging and kissing you, and quitting you all the time.

Has anybody already got the recently published biography written by Jeffrey Magee "The Uncrowned King of Swing: Fletcher Henderson and Big Band Jazz" on Oxford University Press? GoM? Any impressions?

And in my books want-list, this one´s been for so long (too long). One of these days... Hendersonia, The Music of Fletcher Henderson and his Musicians; a Bio-Discography by Walter C. Allen., Highland Park , 1973

All my Fletcher is on Classics. I have quite a few of them and I have no complaints on the sound quality (but I´m not and audiophile at all, so don´t you ever trust in me ). Fletcher Henderson doesn´t attract many attention nowadays, I´m afraid. I started a thread on AAJ last year and only got a few replies (very few, actually). He led which was the most important African-American band of the mid-20´s (Duke took his place a bit later). IMHO he was a capable but not outstanding pianist, but he would deserve a pedestal if only for: -establishing the standard for big band arrangement, with his own writing (that later would make Benny Goodman´s one of the most successful big bands in the late 30´s) and with the work of two incredible arrangers: Don Redman and Benny Carter. -establishing as well the standard use of reed and brass sections. He wasn´t a business man, but his big band gathered, in its more than twenty years of living, some of the greatest musicians of that era..... I mean of all times jazz!!! Just a few of them, as they come to my mind: Trumpet/cornet: Louis Armstrong, Rex Stewart, Cootie Williams, Tommy Ladnier, Henry Red Allen, Roy Eldridge, Joe Smith, Sidney De Paris, Wilbur De Paris, Bobby Stark... Saxophones: Don Redman, Coleman Hawkins, Benny Carter, Ben Webster, Chu Berry, Russell Procope, Lester Young... Clarinet: Buster Bailey... Trombone: JC Higginbotham, Dan Minor, Dicky Wells, Benny Morton, Charlie Green... Drums: Sid Catlett... Bass: John Kirby...

According to Duke Ellington Panorama discography, there are only two recordings of that song: -the one for the Live at the Blue Note (which was recorded on August 9, 1959 and not on 1952): Roulette CDP 7243 8 28637 2 4 -and a previous one, Live at Newport 58, recorded on July 3: Columbia C2K 53584 And it´s credited to Ellington/Rembert.

Up again! The on-line discography will be soon available in Michael Fitzgerald´s jazzdiscography website.

Are there any volume for Red Allen on Neatwork label? That would complement my Classics (though not with JRT Davies remasters).
