  2. EKE.. you should visit the other joint a bit more often The greatest recording debut. BTW: I´ve been listening to that session this morning. I have it on Classics label. So, no alternate takes. I don´t know if that is the greatest recording debut, but it´s rough enough for me!
  3. EKE.. you should visit the other joint a bit more often The greatest recording debut. I was meaning on this board but.... .... yes, I should!
  4. That´s a very precise figure, Lon!
  5. Have read through the various replies now and Agustin pinned this one way before I did. But just because I was invading Spain at the time the BFT 17 reached me No need to invade us, now that our French-Spanish relations have been improved by our new Government! Sorry, no politics here!

  7. Mike: Count me in for compiling another BFT... in a decade or so!
  8. Another big for the music he recorded with Luis Russell (under the latter´s name or as Henry Red Allen and his New York Orchestra). And for the Hawk-Red pair, check their 1933 recordings for Brunswick (rejected at the time) and Banner labels. As an aside note: I find Satchmo´s influence in early Red Allen to go further than simply trumpet playing. Allen´s vocals (very remarkable, IMHO) come directly from Armstrong´s singing style (and even tone, sometimes). Check "Hush my mouth (if I ain´t goin´ south)" or "The river´s taking care of me" (1933), as an example.
  9. On his style: (from duke.edu pages)

  15. How many Chronogical (sic) Classics do you have? Just curious! Me I´ve been surprised that I only have about 60 of them. Now I realize that´s because, for some of my favorite artists, I haven´t followed the Classics way (Ellington, Basie, Bessie, Jelly Roll, King Oliver, Satchmo, Lady Day...).
  16. You lucky Guy! B-)
  17. How much do you pay (new and used) for the Classics in Paris, brownie? Though it killed the cat, just curiosity...
  18. brownie: I had never found the Hatologies (except some special sales at on-line retailers) for less than 17-18 €. This was a great find, I think. The Classics were priced from 11.0 to 11.9 €. Reasonable prices, in my opinion. Specially when you can´t find them in Spanish stores (FNAC in Madrid used to have a bunch of them years ago, but nowadays all you can find is "lost" CD in some artists´ department).
  19. I was at the FNAC stores in Brussels and couldn´t resist. There was a very complete collection of Chronogical (sic) Classics, some Hatologies at 13€, some Verve LPR for 9€... After reducing many times (!!!) the selection in my bag, I purchased about 20 CDs. I´m too lazy to list them now, but there were 4 early Waller on Classics, 2 early Red Allen on Classics, a couple of Classics more (Albert Ammons and Jonah Jones), six Hatologies (one Lacy, one Konitz, the Max Roach-Braxton duo...), some Ayler, another Braxton (Three compositions of new jazz), Konitz (Motion)... Additionally, I´m waiting for 4 more Tete discs (the first three volumes on Soul Note and another one). I have to convince myself (again!!!) that I have to reduce my purchasing habits!
  20. Well, I finally went there (for the second time in my life, I had been there about seven years ago). Spent Sunday and Monday. No time to go to jazz clubs, as my wife had to wake up early for work reasons.... ... while I spent a couple of hours in that FNAC store... the results you can take a look at in the "What did you buy today?" thread. BTW: I strongly recommend to visit the Musical Instrumens Museum (near the Royal Palace). It has a huge collection of world instruments, an incredible collection of early pianos and their ancestors (spinettas, vertical pianos...) and a good ammount of jazz-related instruments (saxhorns, rotophones, sarrusophones, all kind of early trumpets and cornets... no bass sax, though). Very interesting!
  21. Yeah! That FNAC store has a very good jazz section. Just a little bigger than Madrid store, but the selection is better, by a mile. And the staff there knows his thing.
  22. Just saw at jazzmatazz that a reissue of the jazz violin session is coming, on Wounded Bird label. Cduniverse, where it´s now available as pre-order, lists Bayside label (???). I guess this is the classical two violins + one viola session included in the Reprise Mosaic, isn´t it? Anyone heard something about this new reissue? And what is/are that/those two labels I had never heard of?
