The music on this 72-minute CD are previously unreleased. Mildred Bailey performs with the Paul Baron Orchestra, including trumpeters Charlie Shavers & Roy Eldridge, pianist Teddy Wilson, vibraphonist Red Norvo and drummer Specs Powell. The repertoire performed by Mildred Bailey includes several Ellington numbers, pop tunes, traditional & swing jazz standards, and even gospel and ragtime. Mildred Bailey has a great voice and was in her prime at the time of these recordings in 1945 – she has a bright, sunny vocal timbre, a shimmery vibrato and a musician’s ear for rhythmic variation and phrasing. Besides the excellent soloists in Paul Baron’s orchestra, there are also great guest appearances by Tommy Dorsey, Earl Hines and drummer Cozy Cole. Mildred Bailey was a contemporary of Billie Holiday but never received the same degree of fame, in spite of her great talent – this CD should help give Mildred Bailey the recognition she deserves. Mildred Bailey’s voice radiates swing, good cheer and warmth. Willie "The Lion" Smith Live Zürich, Switzerland LABEL: Storyville Records CATALOG NUMBER: 103 8360 GENRE: swing/stride piano BARCODE: 717101836024 Willie "The Lion" Smith – piano Ernest "Bass" Hill - bass Wallace Bishop - drums CD 1: I’ve Found A New Baby / Echoes Of Spring / Falling Stars / Polonæse / Swinging With Bishop / I Got Rhythm / Fats Waller Medley - Keepin’ Out Of Mischief Now - I’ve Got A Feeling I’m Falling - There’s A Gal In My Life - Ain’t Misbehavin’ / Nagasaki / St. Louis Blues / Honeysuckle Rose CD 2:12th Street Rag / Royal Garden Blues / I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate / Baby Won’t You Please Come Home / Ol’ Man River / Basin Street Blues / Morning Air / Tea For Two / Sweet Georgia Brown The music on this double-CD (19 tunes, 1hour 45 min.) has never been previously released; it was recorded live in Zurich, Switzerland in 1949. Although normally a solo performer, Willie "The Lion" Smith performs here in a trio setting. The repertoire includes original compositions, Fats Waller and Clarence Williams tunes, Gershwin, blues and traditional jazz classics, spirituals, and even Chopin’s "Polonaise". Smith employs a unique blend of ragtime, impressionism and counterpoint, while combining subtle, melodic lines with intense swing. Here is "live" proof that Willie "The Lion" Smith was one of the most original, humorous and unpredictable jazz pianists of the 20th Century, as well as possibly the best "stride" pianist ever. Smith and the trio are in an instant groove from the very first tune of this 105 minute-long concert, and they never stop swinging. Smith never uses clichés - even very well-known tunes sound fresh and new. This CD is a must for all Willie "The Lion" Smith fans; Smith, himself, says of the music: "This was a very good concert. We played for each other and together and were perfectly relaxed". The blues of Snooks Eaglin & Boogie Bill Webb LABEL: Storyville CATALOG NUMBER: STCD 8054 GENRE: blues BARCODE: 717101805426 Snooks Eaglin – guitar & vocals Boogie Bill Webb – guitar & vocals Harmonica Slim – harmonica & vocals Intro / Mustang Sally / Let The Four Winds Blow / Guess Who? / Drop The Bomb / Money / St. Pete Florida Blues / San-Ho-Zay / Country Boy Down In New Orleans / Hideaway / Johnny B. Goode / Talk To Your Daughter / You Got A Right / You Better Watch, You Might Get Killed / Kansas City / Early In The Morning This 52-minute CD consists of 12 tunes by Snooks Eaglin and 4 tunes by Boogie Bill Webb, all recorded live in New Orleans in the mid-80’s. This music has never been previously released on CD. These are two authentic bluesmen – each with his own personal, unique style. Both Snooks Eaglin & Boogie Bill Webb grew up in New Orleans. Snooks Eaglin is a master musician and unique guitar genius. His style is intensely rhythmic as well as loose and casual - at the same time. Boogie Bill Webb has a refreshingly rough "downhome" style that sets him apart from mainstream New Orleans rhythm & blues. Besides original compositions, Eaglin also performs tunes by Fats Domino, Ray Charles, Freddy King and Chuck Berry; Webb performs originals and a tune by Little Walter. This is the real blues performed by two exciting and unique bluesmen, each with a very distinctive and different style; the CD is particularly important because of the very few recordings available with Boogie Bill Webb.

It´s been a long time since I gave this one a spin. I´ll play it today. Thanks for bringing this one up to light!

I was mainly a lurker in the old BNBB. When it crashed, I joined AAJ and organissimo almost at the same time, but was a more frequent poster at AAJ for some months (don´t ask me why, I simply had to choose one!). Then, and basically because most of the posters whose knowledge I was more interested in, were hard core members here, I decided to change my main board (and the home page on my computer, be sure!). And that´s all for now! ...though I have recently discovered a couple of Spanish jazz forums (both of them quite interesting!), and though it´s much easier for me to post in Spanish than in this strange Shakespeare´s language... THIS WILL BE MY JAZZ CYBER-HOME FOREVER!

At last we got a good picture of you without clothes...

Anyone heard from Rooster Ties recently?
EKE BBB replied to Peter Johnson's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
As far as beer was concerned it was cold turkey when I was around. Red wine - and some more - it was! I should have supposed... BTW: I´m still waiting for some recommendations on those Languedoc wines from you... Maybe I should start a wine thread here! (though during summer I reduce drastically my wine consuming, not having a good "cava" for it at home: I hate 30º Celsius red wines... ) -
BTW: do vocalists count here? If so, I´d go with Sheila Jordan....
-
Tete Montoliu has a very peculiar tone, very percussive. But I´m not sure if I would recognize him by his tone or, as John L said, for the phrasing and the notes he chose, played with "that" tone. I think Ben Webster is a good example of a very recognizable player with just one (well, maybe a few) notes, specially in his later years.

Rooster, welcome back! Couw has been holidaying and is now heading back home slowly. Saw him when he was in Paris. He did not look depressed to me Surely you left a long row of empty glasses of beer behind you... -
... in the Nessa LP 12": N 13 ... but there´s also a LP on the Spanish Ensayo label (Ensayo LP 12": ENY-35) and it´s called "Soul´s nite out", as the CD reissue (Ensayo CD: ENY-CD-9774)

Another great for that disc. I´m currently listening to it and it´s a gem, IMHO. Lucky T plays soprano on 6 tracks and tenor on 4. I´d point out a beautiful version of "Body and soul" on soprano, and his originals. BTW: I have the 1999 Ensayo CD reissue:

I´m sure that, if my wife would ever know this, she would think you´re a very baaaaaaaaad influence! She hates me each time a big black box comes...
-
And again, thanks to all those who are contributing to this project! There are guys I didn´t even know, sending us mails with additional material (lists of releases, discographical data for broadcasts, private sessions, live dates...). THANK YOU!
-
You´re welcome! As I´m listening to it now, I will recommend another weakness of mine: "Blues for myself", a 1977 date recorded for the Spanish "Ensayo" label. It´s a wonderful trio date with Wyboris (d) and Peter (b), that shows Tete´s mastery in playing the blues. Oh, that "Blues for Llorach" really moves me....

12 new additions to my ever-growing Tete Montoliu collection (for a few of them I previously had a CDR but wanted to contribute to the Tete Montoliu estate ): -Momentos inolvidables de una vida 1965-1992 Fresh Sound Records (65-92). Bought this 2 CD compilation though I previously had almost, if not all, the material included, because it has a 24 booklet I needed to read for our discographical work (not that interesting at the end) and a complete list of releases (this was really interesting) -Songs for love Enja 1971 -Lush life SteepleChase 1971 -Boleros Ensayo 1975 -Temas brasileños Ensayo 1973 -Temas hispanoamericanos Ensayo 1973 -Tête à Tete SteepleChase 1976 -Live at the Keystone Corner Timeless 1979 -Catalonian fire SteepleChase 1974 -Soul´s nite out Ensayo 1970 (actually, this is a Lucky T date) -Charlie Mariano with the Tete Montoliu trio: It´s standard time vol.1 Fresh Sound Records 1989 (I hadn´t managed to get this one so far) -Tete Montoliu interpreta a Serrat Fresh Sound Records 1969 One more step in my completist Milky Way! (though I´m still very far from Gordokae...) Oh, and don´t ask me how much some of them did cost me!

For me it´s Johnny Hodges.

BIG THANX! (reply sent)

Charles: It´s hard to pick just a few recordings, but I´ll try to pick some: -for his solo recordings, you could start with the two volumes of the Boston Concert (released on SteepleChase) -in a trio format, among my favorites are the three volumes also released on SteepleChase called "Catalonian Nights" with John Heard and Tootie Heath -and as for his output as a sideman, I have a love affair with a date called "Gentle Ben" (Ensayo, 1972). Beautiful music with Ben Webster in the leader role, Tete, Peer Wyboris and Eric Peter.
