  1. This time I chose the Ordinary Mail shipping option.... and many weeks have passed since I ordered this one (alongside the T/K/M and the New Orleans sets). Any thoughts before it arrives? Thanks!
  2. You should definitely go! Here´s my post on the concert I attended last fall in the Emociona!!! Madrid jazz festival:

Nameless Tune (Povel) - 5:16
  6. So, there isn´t any recorded evidence of Hawkins playing live after 1966?
  7. JIMMY RUSHING (that´s why they called him Mr. Five-by-Five) BTW: in Basie´s band, Sweets Edison and Prez named just about everybody: Jimmy Rughing was "Honey Bunny Boo" or "Little Jim".
  8. Ooops, Lon posted it before me!
  9. Ain´t nobody´s business if I do - Billie Holiday There ain’t nothing I can do Or nothing I can say That folks don’t criticize me But I’m going to do Just as I want to anyway And don’t care just what people say If I should take a notion To jump into the ocean Ain’t nobody’s business if I do If I go to church on sunday Then cabaret all day monday Ain’t nobody’s business if I do If my man ain’t got no money And I say take all mine, honey Ain’t nobody’s business if I do If I give him my last nickel And it leaves me in a pickle Ain’t nobody’s business if I do But I’d rather my man would hit me Than follow him to jump up and quit me Ain’t nobody’s business if I do I swear I won’t call no copper If I’m beat up by my papa Ain’t nobody’s business if I do Nobody’s business Ain’t nobody’s business Nobody’s business if I do In fact, there are many standards I identify with Billie Holiday ("Lover man" among them) I don’t know why but I’m feeling so sad I long to try something I never had Never had no kissin’ Oh, what I’ve been missin’ Lover man, oh, where can you be? The night is cold and I’m so alone I’d give my soul just to call you my own Got a moon above me But no one to love me Lover man, oh, where can you be? I’ve heard it said That the thrill of romance Can be like a heavenly dream I go to bed with a prayer That you’ll make love to me Strange as it seems Someday we’ll meet And you’ll dry all my tears Then whisper sweet Little things in my ear Hugging and a-kissing Oh, what I’ve been missing Lover man, oh, where can you be?
  10. Jim: I don´t have this CD and actually I don´t like it A friend of mine, who likes this guy very much, played it for me a few months ago. When I listened to your BFT, this track reminded me of that kinda groove (more than RTF) and a little AMG research did the rest. B)
  11. There are many outstanding recordings of "On the sunny side of the street" (Pres, Hawk, Tatum, Armstrong), but I identify it with Sonny Rollins. It was one of my first jazz CDs: "Sonny side up".
  12. Yeah! But Pres also did a memorable version in 1942 (with Nat Cole, if I remember correctly)
  13. Thanks! Have you heard it? How did he play, a few months before his death?
  14. Interested in how you rate his final recordings as opposite to Pres last discs. From the little recorded evidence I´ve heard, Hawk´s hard drinking and little eating clearly damaged his faculties and authoritative blowing. It´s been a long time since I heard "Sirius" (Pablo, December 1966, his final studio recording). I remember it quite depressive, hardly making it in the slow tempos. I think I´ll give it a spin tonight. I don´t have "Supreme" (Enja, September 1966). I´ve heard he did a good appearance with JATP in 1969. Was it recorded?
  15. I recently had some serious quarreling with my wife about ROOM in our fairly reduced (about 100 m2) house, and WEEKLY (or should I say daily?) CD PURCHASE RATE! The worst thing about it is that I know she´s completely right: we should throw away all my two children´s toys... or buy a new house, what, at the current real state Madrid prices... would be in some next millenium!!! That´s why I´m selling my opera collection, and will sell a great part of my pop/rock collection. I´ve become too jazzaholic! In spite of all this bla-bla-bla... 45 or 50 new CDs are on their way to my place.
  16. Clarinetist Jimmie Noone also did some vocals through his career (check his recordings with his Apex Club Orchestra)
  17. "Chocolate" Williams, who played bass with Art Tatum in a few club dates & private recordings, also did some vocals.
  18. Fascinating thread! I never learned music or how to play an instrument... but for some recorder at a very early age. I still regret it. I´m afraid I won´t have time to start: my everyday life hasn´t got nothing to do with music, so I´ll be a listener and a collector for the rest of my life (and I´m sure I´m losing something) But I won´t let this happen to my children, for sure. So I´d like to ask, which is the ideal age to start into music? (my elder child is two years old) Thanks in advance.

  20. I discovered this guy recently, as well, thanks to a very looong thread at AAJ. He´s got an infectious swing. I must pick many, many more discs...

  22. Very interesting, Larry. Thanks!
  23. Bix Restored, Volume 5: The Bix Beiderbecke Influence (Origin Jazz - Sunbeam) single CD is coming in summer 2004, according to their website.
  24. Now this is music!
  25. "Jazz is the assassination of the melody, it's the slaying of syncopation" (Nick Larocca) Now there´s a new ODJB reissue coming "The Original Dixieland Jazz Band - In London 1919-1920 & The Okeh Sessions 1922-23 (Retrievel)", I just wanted to know what´s your opinion on this band, and their importance in the history of jazz. They were the first group to put jazz on record ("Livery Stable Blues" and "Dixie Jass Band One-Step" for the Victor Talking Machine Company in February 26, 1917), and even Columbia had recorded them in January ("Darktown Strutters Ball" and "Indiana") but rejected to release those sides. Do you think they were simply at the right place at the right time, or do you recognize them outstanding musical merits? Admitting that their music was full of gimmicks and that Nick Larocca was an egomanicacal jester pretending they had invented jazz, IMHO we can deny they did a lot to make jazz popular ("Livery Stable Blues" was a great hit and they introduced jazz in Europe with their 1919-20 London concerts). And I must say I DO enjoy their music, I find it.... refreshing??? even more than 80 years after it was recorded. I highly recommend this Timeless release, remastered by John R.T. Davies BTW: Bix recognize Nick LaRocca as a great influence in his cornet playing.
