I enjoy every Cab Calloway recording I have (all in the Chronological Classics series). He was a great bandleader and an interesting singer... but with the roll of great musicians he had in his band (Gillespie, Webster, Berry, Jones... for instance), I wish he had sung less and left more room for soloing!

To answer the initial question, I´d say that a band who had Jimmie Rushing, Joe Williams and Billie Holiday (& Helen Humes) can´t be surpassed.... and this assertion comes from a die-hard Ellington fanatic!

Jim: I don´t have this CD and actually I don´t like it A friend of mine, who likes this guy very much, played it for me a few months ago. When I listened to your BFT, this track reminded me of that kinda groove (more than RTF) and a little AMG research did the rest. B)

There are many outstanding recordings of "On the sunny side of the street" (Pres, Hawk, Tatum, Armstrong), but I identify it with Sonny Rollins. It was one of my first jazz CDs: "Sonny side up".

Yeah! But Pres also did a memorable version in 1942 (with Nat Cole, if I remember correctly)

Interested in how you rate his final recordings as opposite to Pres last discs. From the little recorded evidence I´ve heard, Hawk´s hard drinking and little eating clearly damaged his faculties and authoritative blowing. It´s been a long time since I heard "Sirius" (Pablo, December 1966, his final studio recording). I remember it quite depressive, hardly making it in the slow tempos. I think I´ll give it a spin tonight. I don´t have "Supreme" (Enja, September 1966). I´ve heard he did a good appearance with JATP in 1969. Was it recorded?

I recently had some serious quarreling with my wife about ROOM in our fairly reduced (about 100 m2) house, and WEEKLY (or should I say daily?) CD PURCHASE RATE! The worst thing about it is that I know she´s completely right: we should throw away all my two children´s toys... or buy a new house, what, at the current real state Madrid prices... would be in some next millenium!!! That´s why I´m selling my opera collection, and will sell a great part of my pop/rock collection. I´ve become too jazzaholic! In spite of all this bla-bla-bla... 45 or 50 new CDs are on their way to my place.

Clarinetist Jimmie Noone also did some vocals through his career (check his recordings with his Apex Club Orchestra)

"Chocolate" Williams, who played bass with Art Tatum in a few club dates & private recordings, also did some vocals.

Fascinating thread! I never learned music or how to play an instrument... but for some recorder at a very early age. I still regret it. I´m afraid I won´t have time to start: my everyday life hasn´t got nothing to do with music, so I´ll be a listener and a collector for the rest of my life (and I´m sure I´m losing something) But I won´t let this happen to my children, for sure. So I´d like to ask, which is the ideal age to start into music? (my elder child is two years old) Thanks in advance.
