  5. One of my favorite photos of Cootie:

  7. The Duke, Johnny Hodges and Harry Carney at Hyannis, Mass. © Olle Lindholm of Sweden
  8. Now look at this sax section: Johnny Hodges flanked by Ben Webster and Al Sears!
  9. Nice photos, John! The last one is a real gas! Duke Ellington and his Famous Orchestra as soon as 1930. Look at the childish face of Johnny Hodges and Sonny Greer!
  10. Yes, I usually copy what I´ve written before using the "add reply" or the "backwards" button, except for a few times... and that´s when I begin to swear on every language I know swear-words (and in that ocassions I wish I knew swajili)
  11. I haven´t got any problem with links, file attachments or quote buttons... but sometimes I have to push the "add reply" button twice, because it doesn´t seem to work at the first time. Then I realize that sometimes it had worked that first time and I have duplicated post/thread!
  12. Jam session... look at the Rabbit, looks like he´s having a good time! And the Duke... where´s the piano? B) He´s playing Rosetta Tharpe´s guitar!
  13. Or is Django giving advice to him?
  14. Post your secret photos of Duke Ellington here! Or the well-known pictures! Even weird stuff! Just to start: Duke & Django, two geniuses together... is Ellington teaching Reinhardt how to play piano?
  15. Next on my wish-list: something by Quartet Out. How could I get those releases, Jim?
  16. Track 15: I have the complete Galaxy recordings of Art Pepper.... and now I know I should listen to it MORE FREQUENTLY!!!

ubu: Looks like it´s the same material: -track list is exactly the same in the Storyville release: same 61 songs and in the same order. However, total playing time doesn´t fit. -regarding recording dates, the Storyville is also from 1935 (13 tracks), 1938 (14 tracks) and 1939 (15 tracks), and the last 19 tracks, acording to liner notes, "...are generally believed to have been recorded c. 1945. However, a copy of Standard 191 bears the following legend, in ink: "Production Test 1/22/44". Therefore, if this notation is accurate, these performances took place on or before January 22, 1944." The Storyville doesn´t mention source and remastering process. The only mention is "produced for CD release by Anders Stefansen". And the release date is 1999, three years after the M&A you brought. To these ears and for that time and source, the Storyville has superb sound. Hope this will help!

A longtime member of Fats Waller´s Rhythm, this tenor saxophonist and clarinetist had a very warm and colourful sound, that I really dig from his recordings with Fats... though we all know that many of his solos (as well as Herman Autrey´s) were usually punctuated by Waller´s comments As far as I know, he only had three leader dates: -four numbers cut on 1938 -sixteen sides recorded on 1946 (for Harmonia, Pathe and Keynote) -and two tracks shared with Mezz Mezzrow in 1953 There´s a volume on Classics, covering 1938-47, that I assume includes the first 20 tracks ??? Any comments on these sides? Are the two titles with Mezz available anywhere? Do you recommend other sideman dates for him? Any further comments on the Honey Bear?

The price for this one at jazzconnections is ridiculous as well, Flurin: 24,95 USD plus 5,95 USD shipping!!!
  22. Anyone cares to comment this ASV/Living Era release, that is supposed* to be the best available compilation of Johnny Mercer singing? * AMG has spoken
  23. Johnny Mercer was a fine jazz/pop vocalist and of course a superb writer of lyrics (or music and lyrics). We wrote about 1.500 songs, among them everlasting classics such as Autumn leaves, Come rain or come shine, Day in day out, Laura, That old black magic, Trav´lin´ light or I remember you. From the sessions Flurin lists, I only have the Cootie Williams date (included in CW Classics 1945-46) and Johnny Mercer is OK.
  24. Perico Sambeat & Bruce Barth Quartet - Jindungo (1997) Perico Sambeat - Ademuz (1995) Brad Mehldau trio with Perico Sambeat - New York Barcelona Crossing vol. 1&2 (1993) Albert Bover & Horacio Fumero - Duo (1995) David Mengual - Monkiana (1996) If I don´t promote Spanish jazzmen, who will do? Now seriously, Perico Sambeat is one of the most interesting European saxophonists of the last ten years, IMHO.
  25. CONGRATULATIONS TO THIS WONDERFUL BOARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
