  1. As said on Goggle Box, I'm not smart enough for a smartphone. (or any kind of mobile phone). MG
  2. Depends on the period. Jazz became chic in the 80s. Those people the dealer was talking about probably hail from thereabouts. MG
  3. For which music, eh? For Gospel: 1947-57 (quartets) and 1985-95 (choirs) For R&B: 1943-53 (jump blues) and 1959-69 (soul) For Djeliya: 1970-80 (Government bands) and 1992-2002 (Indies) For Mbalax: 1980-2000 (&2001-2013 ) For Jazz: 1959-1979 (soul jazz & disco) MG
  4. Ed Cobb Lincoln Mayorga MG
  5. You mean, there'll never be enough Jug anyway? Right. MG
  6. That reminds me. Typically today, an album is released about a year after it was recorded. How long was the typical lag time fifty years ago? Good question; depends on the label, I think. When my paste problem is sorted out, I might do some research on this. Would you regard the albums that have been listed in this thread as a decent kind of random sample? MG
  7. Damn right, Ubu! I'd forgotten that session. MG
  8. You're a gent, Guv! Thanks very much indeed. MG
  9. Yes - that's a good 'un. In addition to the James Brown and 'Go power' I'd have to mention Ray Charles at Newport The great Ray Charles David Newman - Fathead Nat Adderley - Work song Jimmy Smith - Back at the Chicken Shack and A love supreme (oops, should I have said that? ) MG
  10. Last night, a DL from Amazon Lully - L'orchestre du Roi Soleil - Jordi Savall - Alia Vox Anyone got sleeve notes in English for this one? MG
  11. I agree. But it was the first full decade for 12" LPs. And some jazz labels weren't issuing much until latish in the fifties. SOme time in the late fifties, jazz labels found that jazz 12" LPs SOLD and the floodgates opened. And when floodgates open, there are usually floods. By the seventies, rock was ruling the LP market so, while many many great jazz albums were made then, they weren't such a prevalent item in shops' racks. MG
  12. On the JJM site, one of the comments began with: "I find it strange that no one else included “Rah,” the first album by Mark Murphy". WTF? Anyway, I don't get all the "strange" references. There's nothing strange going on here. As Clunky said above, "Just like the polls here, ask 100 people get a hundred answers....." It's bizarre that someone would find it "strange" that one of their personal favorites wasn't mentioned, unless it was some universally-recognized classic (and even then, it might be too subjective to voice an objection). What was more surprising to me was that two of the participants in the linked story selected JJ's "Proof Positive". That's not to say I don't think it's worthy, but what were the odds? Even in one decade, the number of choices is immense. I might have chosen a Hawes Contemporary title too, btw, but probably "I'm All Smiles" or "Here And Now" over "Green Leaves", particularly because the material was generally more "contemporary" to the 60's. Sorry Jim, you missed the joke. I don't think it's strange at all. MG
  13. There's nowt on BN of Jug. There's an album on PJ with Groove Holmes, which is one of Jug's (and Groove's) best. And a couple of tracks done for Aladdin. But also, some Savoy and United material, which wouldn't be caught by Universal. For albums, there's one on Chazzer (never heard it), the Bennie Green on VJ, one on Winley (which might be available to Uni via Chess or maybe not), one on Roots (put out recently by one of the Andorran labels), (part only of?) one on Sessions and one on Enja. If Uptown were to put out a 1948 live gig of Jug's, like the Jacquet that came out last year, I'd buy three and have a select MG
  14. Joe Frazier Caesar Frazier Fraser (who had or has a House)
  15. Eight wives? Wow. How did he ever make it to 93? Only one at a time. MG
  16. Bev, I've got a few two CD sets where the teeth have fallen out. If you have any of these, would you post them when you get a minute alone in your loft? MG
  17. Yes, I suppose Spotify has some use MG
  18. Are they STILL your favourites, Chuck? I never got 'Star bag' until 1996, but I'd still put that in with other stuff I bought at the time. MG
  19. It looks like a vocal album... is that right? Not sure. MG
  20. Many belated thanks Bev. I just downloaded 'L'orchestre du Roi Soleil from Amazon, as Alia Vox don't do downloads. Of course, no sleeve notes from Amazon. MG
  21. Strange no one put down Willis Jackson - Star bag - Prestige - 1968 or James Brown - Grits & soul - Smash - 1964 or Illinois Jacquet - The soul explosion - Prestige - 1969 and Illinois HAS to have two in there Illinois Jacquet - Go power - Cadet - 1966 MG
  22. I played the Japanese CD this morning, funnily enough. But I agree with you. For me, 'Soul ballads' is the best. But 'Otis blue' has the best sleeve. MG
  23. I didn't know that. Though really, I was asking Bev, who I know DOES do downloads MG
