  7. Struth! I guess it's not your electricity that's running the board, Jim. Glad to hear you're at least warm now, if damp. MG
  8. As today was my first encounter with the early editions of Louis Armstrong's big band, I've just got to say 'You're driving me crazy' - I think it was take C that really got me, but it might have been B MG
  9. Welcome Donpullenwasgreat and thanks for bumping this thread, which I've never seen before. I think I've got to say that most of my old slippers would be from the R&B world James Brown - Grits & soul - Smash Ray Charles - What'd I say - Atlantic David Newman & Ray Charles - Fathead - Atlantic Etta James - At last - Argo but a few jazz albums, too Lou Donaldson - Blues walk and Gravy train. (Well, 'Alligator bogaloo', too, I guess. Oh, and 'The natural soul'.) Hank Crawford - True Blue - Atlantic Les McCann - The truth - PJ Gerald Wilson - On stage - PJ MG

  12. There's this Cootie Williams - Original Hit recordings - Phoenix This is available from Amazon UK as downloads. The original LP just had the 1944 recordings, but I see that 'Floogie boo' is included, which was done for the Elite label (which was renamed Hit later, then Majestic) in '41 or '42 - not sure when. I've only got the LP with the '44 tracks but the original version of 'Round midnight' is on there. It was a VERY transitional band. Cleanhead Vinson and Jaws were in it, as well as Bud Powell. Cleanhead's big hits 'Cherry red blues' and 'Somebody's got to go' are both included as well as a few routine swing numbers and a couple of bop numbers. I've always found this album a delight, as well as interesting, to listen to. MG

  18. All day I've been deeply into Louis Armstrong - The OkeH Columbia & RCA Victor recordings 1925-1933 - Sony Legacy Which my wife got me for Christmas, but there wasn't time to start listening to yesterday, after the family had gone home. Zounds! I'm really impressed hard with his OkeH big band sides, which I've never heard before. The band then was completely, insanely abandoned. On Victor and Decca, they'd been tamed. Now just finishing disc 10 (Victor alternative takes). Lovely stuff! MG

  25. There's Clyde McPhatter & the Drifters doing 'White Christmas' on the Drifters first LP, of course. And Charles Brown's 'Merry Christmas baby' on innumerable compilations (which I haven't got, 'cos I've got the 45). MG
