  1. Just ended Kool & the Gang - Music is the message - DeLite now Milt Jackson & Ray Brown - Jackson/Brown jam - Pablo Live MG
  2. Oh yes, I must dig that out. Thanks for the reminder, Kevin. MG
  3. Nothing. I just said there would be more of an incentive. I would suggest that there be additionally some form of tax break for majors if they license to third parties, just to get the stuff out there and propogate the culture. Much better than trashing great art in a public domain free-for-all. Sounds like you'd prefer not to have music available at all, rather than listen to 'trashed' versions. Have you never bought an LP that's been trashed but is playable? I've got lots MG
  4. Postman brought this, this morning, and I've just finished it! Fascinating! And often hilarious! I used to get R&B, blues & gospel records from him in the late 70s/early 80s. He's the first person I encountered who was a nut for singing preachers and I got quite a few sermons from him. MG
  5. "3 solo kora albums, both of which are beautiful." Did you mean all are beautiful or only two are? Not being fussy - just curious. I forgot one to start off with, then remembered it and added after I'd written the final line. All 3 are bootiful. MG
  6. Not music, but Last swill & testament - Paul 'Sailor' Vernon I used to get blues & R&B records from him, back in the day. He had the funniest auction/sale magazine ever! Also most interesting. I think Hans found this for me a few months ago. Thanks Hans. MG
  7. That's why I wish EU copyright law wasn't the way it was. If the rights were still in the exclusive hands of the majors there would be more of an incentive for them to release or license them. As it is pre-1963 sessions can't be legitimately released without the danger of being immediately and legally booted by dozens of fly-by-night companies -- and they are ALL ropey outfits IMO, no exceptions. The majors had been able to issue tons of material on CD in the eighties, nineties and naughties, before it went out of copyright and didn't. What makes you think that, without EU copyright law allowing the issue of this material, any of it would have come out, or would come out if things weren't as they are? The majors own heaps of great music recorded in the 70s and 80s by the West African branches of Decca UK, Philips, Polydor (all with Universal now) and EMI. Mere scratchings of it are available. The same seems to be true for a lot of Latin American music - Colombian recordings seem to be the rarest, though I'm no expert in this. The rule of my record collecting life has been to avoid the recordings of the major companies as much as I could. So they bought up the indies and treated the material much as they treated their own material. 'I'll be glad when you're dead, you rascal you'. MG
  8. 3 solo kora albums, both of which are beautiful. Batorou Sekou Kouyate et sa kora - Kouma - great unavailable LP from 1976 Toumani Diabate - Kaira - Hannibal - everyone's got this, haven't they? Toumani Diabate - The Mande variations - World Circuit. MG
  9. Good guess. He did work with Otis. But he's not Kelso. MG
  10. There's a difference between teaching at university and at secondary school. My older grandson (18) has been doing some interesting stuff with music at school, which I don't think is part of a 'standard' curriculum. I should think there's more flexibility at school. MG
  11. Fresh Sound finally started covering McCann's Pacific Jazz output. Similar to The Three Sounds on Blue Note, his music might not be up to Cuscuna's standards. The Fresh Sound discs add bonus material, I can't yet tell about their sound. I'm going to get round to the Fresh Sound releases soon. The first batch didn't include bonus material; just some material from early sessions that was issued on LP later. MG
  12. And that's Ella Fitzgerald, is it? MG
  13. A trivia clue for #6. The tenor player made the barking noises on Willie Mae Thornton's 'Hound dog'. I hope that's helpful... MG
  14. 'Done it again' is very nice. 'Swingin' at the Gate' (also on PJ) is even better. Those two would make a good twofer. 'People & love' is THE Lytle album, though. MG
  15. Yes, but the Argo/Cadet material has already been issued by Lonehill. I'm very happy with that set. As also with the Johnny Hodges/Wild Bill Davis material from Verve & RCA Victor. But I'm still waiting for the complete Freddie McCoy on Prestige/Cobblestone and the complete live Les McCann on PJ and the complete studio Les McCann on PJ. MG
  16. With their HQ in Glasgow MG er.... you mean Edinburgh I thought it was Glasgow where you score all your 78s. MG This is the place in my home town - Edinburgh Smart-looking place! MG
