  1. Well, I've only just got it and only heard it twice but Billie Holiday's version from the JATP concert of 22 Apr 1946 just kills me. MG
  2. Really nice story! MG
  3. Glad you liked at least some. And I'm glad I fooled you with Dave Bartholemew MG
  4. Oh, that's interesting. Well, I wouldn't say no to Budd then. I thought you'd get this straight off. MG
  5. Wow! You played with William Bell!!!! I have lots of Piano Red's stuff, as Piano Red and Dr Feelgood. Never knew who the guitarist was. Also never knew DOn Law produced Robert Johnson's recordings. Phew! What blew MY mind was that 'Right string but the wrong yo-yo' was derived from 'Right key but the wrong keyhole' by Clarence WIlliams' Blue Five, which I finally heard a few weeks ago on the Sidney Bechet Mosaic Select. Your post made me dig out my Piano Red EP Clyde 'Blowtop' Lynn on sax, Wes Jackson, (g) and Marion Booker (later with the George Benson/Lonnie Smith/Ronnie Cuber quartet). MG
  6. I've got the Redd and Roach 45s, too. On Charles WIlliams' album 'Stickball', 'Please send me ..." is 8:00 mins. And the B side is listed as 'Bacon butt fat'; is yours really listed as 'butter'? I hope you have all 3 of those Charles WIlliams Mainstream albums; all with Brooks, Pullen and Bill Curtis (later founder of the Fatback Band). MG
  7. Great report, Ed. Made me feel good. MG
  8. Heretic! No, anarchist MG
  9. Playing today's new purchases Dakota Staton - Crazy he calls me - Capitol (World Record Club) Wonderful stuff recorded at singles sessions between '54 and '58 and cobbled together into a magnificent LP. Lionel Hampton - Hampton hits - Ades (World Record Club) a 1958 concert. Strangely put together LP: side 1 16m23s; side 2 24m50s. Ben Webster and associates - Verve (World Record Club) Had this one on my 'get it one day' list for ages. Glad I did. Halfway through side 2 now. Funny thing about all these WRC discs, none of them have any indication of which is side 1 or A/2 or B. You have to look at the master number. Next Sonny Stitt - Sonny's Bubba sessions - Who's Who (Kingdom Jazz UK) Not heard this yet but, with that band.... MG
  10. No one I'd remotely consider going to see. MG
  11. In my view, professionals and other kinds of experts want to sell you something; they want their advice to be followed. But no kind of advice is fully informed by all the circumstances of the recipient(s) of the advice. So advice should be regarded as ONLY advice, and should not be regarded as decisive. That's not the way professionals work, however. Well, it's the way I work. MG
  12. Sneaked into Kelly's while in Cardiff shopping. Found they'd bought a load of World Record Club material from someone who knew how to look after records; they're in BEAUTIFUL nick! A tenner each. Dakota Staton - Crazy he calls me - Capitol (World Record Club) Lionel Hampton - Hampton hits - Ades (World Record Club) a 1958 concert. Ben Webster and associates - Verve (World Record Club) And one that wasn't on WRC, but looks like it was owned by the same person. Sonny Stitt - Sonny's Bubba sessions - Who's Who (Kingdom Jazz UK) MG
  13. When I retired, at the farewell do, I said that I wasn't qualified; just got by on talent One of my responsibilities at work was smart-arse remarks. There's a serious point here, but I'm going to Cardiff shopping in a few minutes, so I'm not prepared to go into it at present. See ya this evening. MG
  14. Oh, well, the MVP on #3 is actually unknown There used to be a column in the Record Mirror in '62-'63 called 'Great unknowns' - I recall Marvin Gaye being in there in '63 (!) but he hadn't had any hits in the UK then (no Motown hits at all 'til '64). Anyway, this guy's one of them. MG Lloyd G. Mayes? Don't know. Really. Yes, Budd did a lot of sessions. Not sure how much he did for Atlantic. Have to check. Have you recognised the tune on #5 yet? I'm certain you have at least two versions of it. It's part of the story. MG
  15. MG
  16. I'd like it to be Della Reese. MG Ah ha! It IS Della - from 'Della cha cha cha' - but it's been slowed down, by the sound of it. MG
  17. Saw this passing through the lounge the other day. And heard it, too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCLw_zCXrPU So, Eva Longoria is the lady swishing her hips to great effect, but who's the singer? MG
  18. Rudolph Johnson - Spring rain - Black Jazz (Snowdog Japan) Walter Bishop - Keeper of my soul - Black Jazz (Snowdog Japan) Doug Carn - Infant eyes - Black Jazz (Snowdog Japan) LIstening to the Carn now. Very Larry Young-ish. But also Coltrane-ish. Glad I bought this. Jean Carn's vocals a LOT more suitable than Althea Young's. Who is George Harper (ts, fl)? A relative of Billy? MG
  19. Got my black Jazz CDs today - posted in CA 1 April. Pretty slow, but whose fault? US or UK systems or both? MG
