It's listed at Amazon UK, and two of the Amazon market sellers have copies on offer, as well. The same firm has some at Amazon.com. I don't think it's a spoof. The appearance of Ron Holloway's name in the title is the very odd one. Whatever one thinks of Kenny G, he has a kind of importance and his name can help sell a book. But Ron is one of the most deeply unimportant good sax players ever. MG

What vinyl are you spinning right now??

Thanks Brownie. I see they don't still have Daniel-Lesur's "Symphonie de danses" in print. Following Kenny Weir's thread on remakes, I listened to Bobby Bland - Tell Mr Bland - MCA - the new version of "Queen for a day" is wonderful; with a blistering trumpet solo by Bobby Bryant. (The LP ain't all that good, though.) Now, in the same vein Etta James - Etta is betta than evvah - Chess (All Platinum) - the new 1976 version of "W_O_M_A_N", now called "Woman (shake your booty)" is an almost complete reconstruction of the original blues into a blazing hot funk groove that just don't stopppppp! (It's a pity the LP has three tracks reissued from her 1974 LP - I'd have liked it to be all new material. Perhaps All Platinum didn't want to pay for more studio time. I think it's the only new Chess album that was made when the Robinsons owned the firm.) MG -
HP - you started your discography too late and missed - 1969 - The Gator Trane - Willis Jackson & John Coltrane on Gator Horns, with Jackie Ivory (org), Pat Martino (g), Yusef Ali (d) Trane was getting interested in this instrument that Wilis invented but died before he could get anywhere on it. MG

I certainly agree with the Patsy Clines - her singing got a lot better, more than sufficiently so to counter the countrypolitan backings. Funny, that's true of few female vocalists; but it is also true of Gloria Lynne. Her recent albums for HighNote are a lot better than those I've heard done for Everest in the sixties. There's a lot more feeling in her voice now. But she's been recording new material, not rehashing old stuff. MG -

Is Erato still in business? Wow! Astonishing for a small indie classical label to be around for fifty odd years. MG -
I don't think that was the only factor leading to the sale, though that was the one that Francis devoted more time to. A jazz company, in those days, had big cashflow problems when it got a hit, because it would have to deal with a load of firms it never used to need to say hello to - the sixties equivalents of Walmart (Sam Goody's). Those firms didn't give a toss about paying their bills until the company had another hit record that they wanted to put in their stores. But BN would have had to pay for those tens or hundreds of thousands of records and sleeves. I think the firm could cope; ordinarily, Blue Note LPs were pretty profitable and I'm sure they could have factored their bills to ease the cashflow. But when you get the artists coming along, I guess you might say, WTF? And if you were offered a deal where the money problems were taken off your plate, but you retained control of the music, which is what happened with Liberty... And no doubt Liberty paid Alfred and Francis a few bucks as well MG

No kidding! I'd buy that one immediately. Sometimes, you just can't explain why you do or don't do something. This is one of those times. MG -

Hm, there's also Mongo Santamaria's versions of "Afro blue". The original version, recorded in May 1959, for Fantasy isn't a patch on the version he did for Pablo at Montreux in July 1980, on the LP "Summertime" - course, he did have Diz in the band for the Montreux gig MG
