  1. Cardiff Devils' uniform isn't quite as garish, but they're only 3rd in the Elite League at present MG
  2. And they didn't have anything in them that you couldn't get elsewhere. Essentially, they were like grocery convenience stores; their major factor was location - they were in railway stations and business/office districts, not consumer stores locations, which have high rentals. MG
  3. I've been reading John Broven's book "Record makers and breakers" and there's this nice little story from Dave Burgess, the guitarist with the Champs. So it was, let's get a band together. Johnson had seen a sax player a few nights before, Danny Flores (aka Chuck Rio). They got him in and did the record. So in the end, Challenge paid Les Baxter ten grand. And when you think of it, it's right up Baxter's street. I liked that little story. MG
  4. You're probably right - there's altogether too much stuff I like MG
  5. Just seems like it sometimes I didn't know Olatunji had done it. MG
  6. Oh well, I haven't heard any Duke Ellington versions of that tune from way back, as far as I can remember - and I think I would. Er... being a B side? A lot of freedom in B sides. MG
  7. Sure... but what's too close? The solo? MG
  8. It sez on the label: "Instrumental trumpet solo by Charley Tabor" (not sure about the last name, a bit small). But WOW! Fucking WOW!!!!! MG
  9. I tried to put Sharony right on the discography before it was published, but she simply couldn't understand me. MG
  10. John Coltrane - Ballads - Impulse (Jasmine) MG
  11. I think there was a record label called Ruthless, at one time. Ah yes - it was a Rap label - Bone thugs-n-harmony recorded for that label. MG
  12. Gladys Knight Pips Laurin Rinder
  13. Missed a trick there - should have said Sonny Til. MG
  14. I like this one a lot. Agree 100% about those two tracks. Always thought that Hank's style was a condensation and emphasising of Bird's sound on "Parker's mood". The title track was heavily sampled by Salt 'n Pepa for their cut "Step". Joel Dorn didn't like this album. He also didn't like the fact that S & P sampled it; but there might have been pecuniary motives behind that. MG
  15. Slack Alice Alice The Jabberwock
  16. Well, I missed that thread in the summer - so Berigan's made me spend three oodles. Thanks. MG
  17. You can hear Art Taylor's hi hat squeak nicely on Gene Ammons' "Jammin' with Jug" (PR7060/OJC211). It was mentioned in the sleeve notes for the reissue on PR7781. It does seem odd RVG not having any oil handy. I dare say he recorded "Candy", too. MG
  18. Despite the on/off strike, three recent goodies arrived today. David Newman - The blessing Lonnie Smith - The art of organiszing Red Holloway - Go Red, go My younger grandson's here today, so I haven't listened to them yet. Going to have a nice evening, though. MG
  19. Henry James T S Eliot J M W Whistler
  20. Well... but have you seen the politics forum? And Hi! MG
  21. Marshall Sehorn Mel Lastie Harold Battiste
  22. Organist Perri Lee (you've heard her on "Sonny Stitt & the top brass") appeared in Doris Day's "Pillow talk" film and Bette Davis' "Dead ringer". MG
  23. It's decades since I heard it, so my memory may be at fault, but in "South of the border" from "Come fly with me", doesn't he sing, "just for a tender while, I kissed the smile, Ay-pon her face"? MG
