And they didn't have anything in them that you couldn't get elsewhere. Essentially, they were like grocery convenience stores; their major factor was location - they were in railway stations and business/office districts, not consumer stores locations, which have high rentals. MG

I've been reading John Broven's book "Record makers and breakers" and there's this nice little story from Dave Burgess, the guitarist with the Champs. So it was, let's get a band together. Johnson had seen a sax player a few nights before, Danny Flores (aka Chuck Rio). They got him in and did the record. So in the end, Challenge paid Les Baxter ten grand. And when you think of it, it's right up Baxter's street. I liked that little story. MG

I like this one a lot. Agree 100% about those two tracks. Always thought that Hank's style was a condensation and emphasising of Bird's sound on "Parker's mood". The title track was heavily sampled by Salt 'n Pepa for their cut "Step". Joel Dorn didn't like this album. He also didn't like the fact that S & P sampled it; but there might have been pecuniary motives behind that. MG

You can hear Art Taylor's hi hat squeak nicely on Gene Ammons' "Jammin' with Jug" (PR7060/OJC211). It was mentioned in the sleeve notes for the reissue on PR7781. It does seem odd RVG not having any oil handy. I dare say he recorded "Candy", too. MG
