YES!!!! Though I've never liked either Cash or Campbell. More of a barrier between me and that kind of music than R&B/Jazz MG

I assume you mean Playboy sold Cy Coleman albums, or was it JRM? Ed Board Esq seems to think that white people didn't buy records by the likes of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Andy Kirk, Count Basie, Chick Webb in the prewar period. Hm. And WAS it white affluence that put the likes of Ramsey Lewis, Jimmy McGriff, Jimmy Smith, the Blackbyrds, Groove Holmes, Donald Byrd, Eddie Harris, Hugh Masekela, Bill Doggett, Willis Jackson, Jack McDuff etc etc on the charts? I suspect not. Jazz is a LOT more complicated than Mr Board thinks. MG

what is your clothing style
The Magnificent Goldberg replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Well, looking back at what I said back then, nine years have made comparatively little difference to me except my Senegalese t-shirts have all worn out, as have my WBGO and others. Now I just wear Spillers Records t-shirts in different colours. I dress even MORE boringly than nine years ago. Basically, it's 'I don't give a toss' style; get what's easy and few others have. MG -
Apart from Sonny Criss' version, Ray Charles has something rather different to offer. But not his voice, which is not featured. But Fathead's tenor IS! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_wWWy7R1Xw I've got to admit, though, that it's something of a disappointment when they start to double time, a minute before the end, but it's only for half a minute or so. So you didn't play any Sarah McLawler? (One of the early jazz organists.) For shame! MG- 8 replies

I'm with you all the way on this view, Steve - and Jim. Sometimes - well, mostly - I like music to be authentically what it's supposed to be. But sometimes you get something that's authentically NOT (or not quite) what it's supposed to be and it's nonetheless great. This cut, I think, is one of those times. Quite a bit of Perez Prado is like that and I love it. MG

Blue Mitchell / Sonny Red - Uptown
The Magnificent Goldberg replied to Chuck Nessa's topic in New Releases
Well, does that mean it fits into a space approx. foolscap size? MG -
Mine's on Skylark, too. What are the advantages of a 78 over a 45? (Oh, let the fact that my latest turntable can't play 78s be irrelevant.) MG

Hur hur, I don't have a smartphone, either. My wife got herself an ipad for Christmas but she won't let me use it and, as for getting her to do shots of West African K7s, well, forget it! A friend of my daughter's does them, but I haven't yet succeeded in being able to copy the three he sent, via her, from his iphone. And, between them, they're slow as arseholes, as we used to say in the Army. MG -
Oh Just as it always was. Cheers Ubu. MG

I don't have the space for a scanner. Well, how big is an Epson V300? MG -

It's not the price, it's the space. I'm seriously ripping my collection to hard drive at present - African K7s are really hard though and you can't find the sleeves on the web. Life's full of pains in the arse, ain't it? MG -
Well, I had a listen to 'Funky butt' yesterday afternoon. The start of track 1 - 'Jumpin' at the Woodside' - just laid me OUT! OK, it's not laying you out music all the time, but it's Arnett performing at or a bit above his usual level. It's NOT dripping with funky rhythms, not even the title track. In truth, I didn't expect that of Arnett and wouldn't have liked it were it so. But funk does drip from everything nonetheless; but REAL funk. It's one of those albums I'm sorry I haven't been listening to for the last 35 years, more or less. On a first listen, it's better, I think, than 'Arnett Cobb is back' (though I haven't played that since October '14). I hadn't realised that it was done AFTER 'Arnett Cobb is back', which was June '78. This one was done in January '80. Both feature Derek Smith (whose work I don't otherwise know) on piano but the newer one has Ray Drummond instead of George Mraz on bass, and Ronnie Bedford (another unknown to me) instead of Billy Hart on drums. Smith is a pretty good pianist, it seems to me. Oh, there's no thumbs up emoticon any more. Oh well, take it as read. MG

Just downloaded 'Funky butt'. Will have a listen this afternoon. MG

I need more money! (And more space.) Does this label's material appear as downloads, chaps? MG -
Well, 'Funky butt' has been out since 2014. Amazon UK (and certainly Amazon USA) have it on download for a good price. Includes 3 alt takes. Will get it tomorrow. Oh, here's the Amazon USA page https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00OYG9W2I/ref=dm_ws_sp_ps_dp $8.99 for DL, $10.25 for new ones from sellers. Go git, my lad!!!! MG

Don't miss the other Arnett on Progressive - Arnett Cobb is back - #7037 - if they reissue that one, too. I'll be getting 'Funky butt' in due course, when it comes out through Amazon UK. MG
-
Oh good. I have the 45 of 'Big boy'. Very nice restrained honking. MG

I agree - the later stuff on Milestone and Muse is great! And 'People and love' on Milestone is his best ever. I think it's not easy to get except on download. But, if you're a fan of the great Marvin Cabell, you have to have that one. What Lytle was playing on several tracks of that was out of this world, too. MG
